As has become the yearly tradition, post your Christmas trees once they're up!

I haven't got one up at home yet, but I did put some time aside at work to to prepare this fine specimen:

Ours will probably go up this week or next weekend. It's just a tad to early atm, but I know the Germans love leaving stuff till the last minute.

    I've got nothin' either.

We should map/model/design/make a giant Mapcore christmas tree for all of us without ones.

I don't give a flip about christmas. I have no decoration whatsoever. The only good think about christmas is the food and the happy faces of the nephews when they get their gifts.

What's not to like about Christmas? Time off work; lots of food; drinking; and sparkly, shiny things everywhere.

    Some people...

First of all its a christian celebration (Jesus birth). I find it wrong when atheists or agnostics (like me) celebrate it. It's also a celebration where social pressure forces you to waste a lot of money on gifts. It was much cooler as a kid when i was on the receiving end

The next thing is that so many people hide their real face behind fake smiles and friendliness during that time. It's disgusting. What stops them from being friendly all year?

Then we have the issue of christmas music. It drives me fucking mental. This shit is everywhere.

    I could go on.

The Christian thing really bothers you? I'd imagine the majority of people celebrating Christmas don't really follow Christianity at all — it's simply become a public holiday that revolves around having fun. Most public holidays have some shitty origin (eg: Guy Fawkes night, Easter) but they're still nice because it's an opportunity to do something different.

I mean seriously, who thinks about the whole Jesus birth thing? All everyone thinks about is Santa and decorations, just like how at Easter everyone thinks about chocolate and bunnies.

And I don't know about your friends and family, but I get along with mine pretty much all year. However it is nice to have an event like Christmas to use as a chance to get together, as normally there's no particular reason for doing so. OK so in an ideal world it'd happen all the time, but when your family reaches into the dozens it's not exactly practical.

There's no real downside to Christmas IMO. Okay so you might have to give some people some stuff, but you don't have to spend much and you usually get something in return (as long as it'd edible I'm usually happy with that). It's not a big deal.

    PS: Scrooooooooge.

Yes it bothers me. I'm very much against organized religion all year and so are a lot of atheists/agnostics. It's very hypocritic to celebrate jesus birth then. We don't celebrate any muslim, hindu or buddhist holidays either so why bother with christian traditions?

I don't know what is so fun about christmas either. The drinking? I can do that all year. Also the family gathering. If a family is funcional they will find always reasons to gather outside of christmas. Birthdays, weddings, first school days, funerals etc.

But anyway i don't want to be the party pooper for you. Just my 2 cents.

Eh, life's too short for that shit. I don't believe in a religion but I wouldn't say I'm against them — I don't really mind if people want to waste their time with superstition. If I spot an opportunity to get drunk and have fun I'm up for it. Hell, I'd probably be out there getting drunk on Independence Day if I lived in the US despite it being about them fucking us over!

Also maybe I'm weird but I do like having an opportunity to give some nice stuff to people I love. Again, in an ideal world you'd do it more often... but shit, twice a year is enough.

You'd be a happier person if you just embraced it and had a good time rather than feeling like you have to make a stand against it.

Probably going a bit off-topic now. I don't mind people having superstitions either. But the reason why i'm against religion is because they interfere with my life and my freedom on a daily basis. We don't live in a "live and let live" society. We are surrounded by religious nuts who make laws for us based on their superstitious beliefs and there are religious groups who treaten our freedoms and values, who kill people daily in the name of their god etc. I value freedom too much to just ignore these things.

I totally understand Stepp's point, and I agree with most of your points, but... I think you're being a little extremist man.

I'm a atheist myself, but I don't mind xmas at all. xmas is not about religion any more, it became more of a society tradition. Where, like you mentioned, hypocrite people offers presents to other people.

On the other hand, It's a good excuse for family reunion, take a break from work, go back home for a couple of days.

Christmas is also all about the children, you know those found memories you have from Christmas when you were a kid? The Christmas tree, all the family reunion, the sweets, the presents... Well, today's children also deserve to live through all that.
