I called this a long time ago -- it was inevitable. Following on from those funny MW2 screenshots, here's another fine example of silly gamers. Now, due to all of the incessant drum banging that went on for the last six months, you'd think this lot were nobly standing in front of tanks in Tiananmen Square, appealing for world peace. Instead, they were displaying faux outrage at Valve releasing another excellent game.

Anyway, enough words, more funnies. This is the second page of the L4D2 boycott steam group and probably 1/3 of the people on that page have bought the game. I mean, I didn't even have to try to get a good picture

That's because the boycotts wants were satisfied. The group just hasn't disbanded.

Aye right. Read the boycotters' "manifesto" and it's the same old shite.

*edit -- I don't really see how much has changed or why people need to be in that group. It's still the same jumped-up outrage-over-nothing, as far as I'm concerned. Valve released a two stage versus map and a few updates; none of this is out of the ordinary or any different to the way Valve has or will be doing things with their games in terms of post-release updates.

Even if the original founders of the group closed it, does anyone actually think for a second that the results of the group's "campaign" changed anything of note, or that the mob of purportedly enraged gamers were placated by the outcome? It's exactly the same as the MW2 group. Process = Whine => Join group boycotting sequel => Buy sequel anyway. Rinse repeat. Do people even know what "boycott" means?

You could have posted this on the L4D2, but ok!

We all know how childish gamers are.

A boycott of a game from the game fanboys is like a hunger strike from the somalian population against starvation; without any dry sense of humor...

Isn't as bad as MW2, but I have no idea why anyone would be happy with how valve handled both l4d games.

l4d1 was a good experiment with a new ip and a new type of game.

l4d2 honestly has things that just wouldn't have worked with the first game, valve were right when they said they wouldn't have been able to make this new content work with the original game.

it still feels like the core l4d experience but there's a lot of new stuff that is really good fun.

at this rate i wouldn't mind seeing l4d3 next year, because i got bored of playing through l4d1 quite quickly, so new campaigns and features is a welcome move.

and at the same time we get to support a developer that has done nothing but good work, great games, and kept a wonderful attitude towards their customers and fans.

One of the reason I like valve is because they take their time to make great lasting games. They clearly did not do that with l4d2. Valve has never made a great game in less then a year, hell no other AAA dev does that these days. And frankly it shows, it's one of the least updated sequels I've seen this gen. I haven't boycotted it as I did not buy the first, but this does lower my opinion of valve. I can imagine a good deal of people bought l4d thinking it would be like tf2, with the game constantly updated and with an ever growing community.

If you don't think its worth your money don't buy it. It's simple as that.

A company that sells millions of their game in the first week despite controversials (cod) has carte blanche to do whatever they want. They don't have to care about anyones opinion anymore. If you don't like that as a fan its time to move on. Such protests are pathetic. Thers plenty of other great games that want to get bought and played.

As for valve its a bit of a mixed bag for me. They deliver quality and have a great service. However they are not free from greed. The pricing on steam for european customers is sign of that enough. So its hard to tell what their real intentions are with l4d2.

How so? Generally a new cast of characters, new story/setting, new gameplay modes, loads of new content, new weapons, and improvement to existing mechanics from the original is considered worthy of a sequel. Why is this IP exempt from that? Because it violated the 2 years between sequels law?

Because... completely new content, new characters, new materials, models, maps, settings, gameplay, ai, director, techniques, effects, shaders, etc don't count as a sequel? What do you call a sequel then?

I'm totally with you on this one. I do not at all get what all this fuzz is about and why so gamers has to whine so much in cases like this. There is nothing worse than people who prefer talking over acting.

First off all I didn't say it wasn't a sequel, I said it was the least updated. And what I consider a good sequel, a sequel that adds enough to justify a full price tag would be TF2, HL2, MW, MW2, BF2, BF:BC. L4D2 amounts to barely more then new maps, and models, it's as many said more how the first should have been then something that go's beyond. It is in no way in the same league as the aforementioned games, they added a lot more to the previous games, and took more then a year to make. And teams like IW and dice have a lot of experience making games on tight schedules, when has valve ever made something in less then a year?

Not really sure why you think MW2 is a more "justified" sequel to L4D2? It adds new maps and weapons/perks but otherwise essentially sticks to what the first game did. Which is a good thing, since that was ace. Like L4D was.

I'm not gonna sit here and say I wouldn't like to see more improvements in L4D2 over it's predecessor, but I'm just glad to have a whole bunch more content to play through with my mates without having to wait years for it.

The only thing that hasn't been significantly updated for L4D2 over the first are the core gameplay mechanics and the graphics. Were are you getting this info from?

So you're okay with paying $60 for MW2, and that's a "Full" Sequel, while you don't want to pay just over half that ($35) for L4D2?

Also if you listen to the developer commentary in L4D2, they've put a ton of work into it. There's something like 20k zombie combinations now, which is *I THINK* ^5 more than the first game.

l4d2 to me has always begged the question, "why didn't they make the first game this instead of releasing a sequel a year later?"

note that i'm not saying they should implement all they have done into l4d, i'm just wondering why they didn't start out with this instead. either way, i'm not getting this because i'm biased against turtle rock studios.

i think what he means is the grade of the content. essentially l4d2 is l4d in a new setting, with more weapons. there simply isn't enough change to justify a sequel. if you look into other game sequels, they will often provide more content than just this - therefore consumers are more likely to think of it as an expansion pack rather than a sequel.

also, people couldn't care less of how much work is put into a game. people want visible results; they want a new, enhanced experience - not something they have essentially seen before (see above statement). not everyone is aspiring to get into the game industry and looking at it through our eyes. i don't even think most people care to watch the developer commentary, much less analyse and reflect upon them.

So... What's MW2? Some gameplay tweaks, and some new maps... What justifies the sequal?

Crysis->Warhead: More storyline told from a different person.

Halo 1-> Halo 3: More storyline, new places, new characters.

Sounds like L4D2 has got all of this.

Also I think they do have a new enhanced experience. Versus mode is FUN. They made some serious tweaks to it so health bonus no longer takes place. It's now a more polished experience that doesn't leave one team 3k points ahead of the other at the end. If you guys can play all of the different modes of L4D2 and tell me that it's not a new enhanced experience, I'm going to ask you what you're smoking and if I can have some of it.

As for the reason it probably wasn't l4d1: It wasn't originally from Valve per say. It was Turtle Rock Studio, and it developed from CSS where they'd take 4 players against bots on expert skills with knife only. I think everyone but one dude from TRS has moved up to Valve's HQ now though. It was originally being co-developed with Ep1, Ep2, Orangebox, etc. There were also limits as to why some of this wasn't done in the first game.

To clarify: I'm not mad at you, I'm not angry or upset. I'm not trying to attack you. I'm just honestly curious why you don't consider it a valid squeal?
