Just a little something I have been playing with for the last week or so.

It's an Enemy Territory: Quake Wars map set on Stroggos. I'm trying to go for a bit of a desolate atmosphere, want the landscape to look kind of artificial as the Strogg have dug every last resource out of their own planet.

Dunno how far I am going with this, just got an itch to play around with ETQW.

Tron: I suggest you take a look at the word of Edward Burtynsky, he's a great photographer. http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/ Usually takes photographs of those kind of places.

One thing you cannot do with Stroggos is make it desaturated. It has to be harsh orange or it just ain't Stroggos.

Maybe they dug the orange out of Stroggos?

This is a piece of level made with the Fresh 3D engine, but i have some problems yet. It's just an exercice for school I have to export on psp, so I use 62 textures, 128*128, 16 colors.

Here's a short video of me working on my Crysis map. I hope it's ok that it's a video and not screens this time around. I'll remove if it's too much trouble.

Enjoy the video. Remember everything is WIP.

And, oh, please watch in 1080p!

    Yeah, so do I.

But you get to work with Crysis 2 and CE 3, you lucky...! Damn I wish I had skill enough for that. Anyway, thanks for your comment, mate!

if you're happy to be a level beatification artist then judging from this work it looks like you're ready

It's more about the availability of jobs than anything else, keep an eye out on the website, if you see something there jump at it

Oh, nice! Too bad I'm just 17... Not yet legal working age, I think. Also I don't have gaming business experience, which I think is required when applying for jobs at Crytek. CryEngine is my first map Editor I've put my hands on so I tend to consider myself as a beginner. Aiming for Crytek is probably my goal in the end, though.

All games companied put experience needed to try an scare people who aren't confident in their skills away. Although I wouldn't quote me on this as I don't actively work in the industry.

Hmm, still, interesting and good to know. Chris, do you know if Crytek has internships or something like that? If so, how can I proceed and learn more about that?

Yup Crytek do Internships, you obiously don't need much experience for that, not industry just a keen talent and all that stuff Knowing the tools is a huge plus of course.

In terms of standard employment it's pretty common to get a job even though you don't meet ALL the criteria, even more so when it comes to visual skills. Some relatively unexperienced people blow the experienced lazy ones out the water Your portfolio often speaks for itself. If your good and a project needs your skills theres a good chance you'd get hired as an Internet/Junior etc

If you're 17 I can safely say by the time you're looking for full time work you shouldnt have much of a problem, if you keep it up

As a Level Designer/Environment Artist, what does this mean? Is it important knowing modeling/texturing as well, even though my profession might be Level Design? I mean, do you do asset creation for Crysis 2 or "just" levels?

Personally I think my lack in skill when it comes to modeling is my weakness...

There are basically two main distinctions:A) Level Design - Gameplay and Scripts. The Level Designer sets a given area corresponding and within the rules of the Game Design and makes sure he pushes the concept of that to the top.

    B) Level/Enivroment Artist - Look and Feel. The Artist sets the eviroment to life. He gives sense and "real" background to the theoretical and "abstract" world the Designer created.

I do the first, but I give allot of feedback/ideas to the artists and general direction of what I'm trying to do at any particular time. We also have some people dedicated to "Beautifying" levels, their primary focus is just like your video, adding all the little details and composing the art in the scene. I'd recommend getting some basic 3d modeling/2d textrue knowledge for either design or art, you'll need it at some point

In answer to your question about "knowing the tools" I use just about every major part of Sandbox toolset to make levels, I don't really need to use tools outside of sandbox editor. Basically I build a level that can be played from start to finish with all events/cinematics/pacing blocked out roughly allowing people that are more specifialized to get into the gritty little details.

Can take this to a PM if you want, doesnt really belong here I guess

True, that's why I must contribute with another pic of the map! Hehe.

On a more serious note, thanks a lot for taking the time to answer all of my questions. You have no idea how valuable it is for me so thanks a lot, mate. Appreciate it.

If I have further questions I might throw you a PM sometime.

That's pretty cool man, but palm trees don't grow in the mountains so place them only when they make sense!

I guess you have a good eye for detail, and that's the first step into a great future / career, if you invest time and dedication into learning the tools!
