Zombie: Not exacty what is seen in D3's shots, but nevertheless good ideas. Continue to contribute and stay positive

Working on a new portal sky model and effects for Doom 3. Probably whip up a map to go with it (something simple).

At the moment I have set up some fake looking lightning that looks quite neat. Anyone got any ideas on what I could mash in there to make it feel more dramatic? I was thinking stuff like debri being sucked in and possibly something like meteors flying through the sky.

Orange. Orange is dramatic. Also maybe some electrical effects, lightning, particles, stuff like that. HAve things getting sucked up is a good idea, just dont let them take the emphasis.

This is small scene I'm working on for contest/portfolio. Theme is film noir.

Having some trouble with the screenoverlay, getting scaled up for some reason so it doesn't look as scratchy and grainy :/

    Suggestions?

Added some colour to it, seems to be a bit better.

Zombie: Looks interesting man. Although I'm confused what I'm looking at. Is that clouds surrounding earth in circular matter? Maybe a diffirent angle would reveal more?

Mr. Happy: I've watched a lot of film noir movies and your little piece looks good. I would say you can improve it by having some antennas on the roof that will create some nice, detailed silhouettes in the background. Also to my understandment film noir uses light and shadows to highlight elements be it an environment or a character. You piece doesn't have a main focal point. I want to look at the roof, then shadow of a guy, then other places. I liked how you added the shadow of the guy, very nice touch. Although since the guy is not in the picture, I would imagine that shadow be much bigger. Good work. I suggest maybe looking at some film noir movies for more ideas if you haven't already and reading what film experts have to say about film noir.

Looks a little better, but perhaps you should go for harsher colors and not something warm, I'd also try mr. happys suggestion with maybe some dark clouds and lightning

That is what it looks like from the outside of the skyportal.

Obviously it looks completely different when you're in skybox looking around etc. Those black dots are some meteors I animated hurling across the sky

Although I think for the time being and my first skybox it'll do. The particle system in D3 is a bit rubbish and I am having difficulty trying to get some good effects happening

So that blueish center is aprt of the skybox texture?

Why not make it rotate on a plane?

    And have the clouds static?

I think you somehow should try to get the smudge down there to rotate as well, looked a little weird when only the clouds rotated to its center, but it didn't rotate at all. I was thinking maybe more like black clouds on top of hard red background (not the warm wine color you have now), with streaks of harsh blue lightning, but that might be a little hard to produce i guess

Well the thing below the clouds is the ground, so it would seem even weirder if that rotated. Just incase no body is aware, that crater is in Africa.

I went for darker colours, but I kinda liked it colourful and it worked out so I am gonna leave it like that now. I am rebuilding the skydome and a cloud plane with different layers of clouds to surroud the maelstrom.

Zombie: Now that I can see what that thing is, it looks cool man. If you don't know what colors to go with, you can make multiple skyportals with various colors. Kevin Cloud of id says he usually works in black and white till he's happy with the image and later adds color. Kinda like sketching with pencil and then coloring.

Wait what, that thing is the ground? Then...what?

It's flat too, kinda odd that it's shapped like

    ...____

    ../.......\

    /..........\

    instead of rounded.
