I really wanted to do something that was really simple, yet really effective, so I did. And here it is: (YES I know the bottom ladder leads to nothing......yet)

EDIT: I am doing a -Final compile now to see if those lighting artifacts go away.

Interesting if not thoroughly unimpressive and stark and ugly... no artistic merit really other than you made it in an editor that would prefer not to see such things, but on a smaller scale it would be a unique environment to walk around in. I do have a desire to jump down and watch my body ragdoll down the slope...

perhaps this map is telling, psychologically

It'd be great (for your portfolio or w/e) if you'd create something besides huge cylinders now

Next thing you are going to show us is an underground cylinder where you use fog to create the eerie effect, and lights dotting the tunnel amongst the pipes... No wait? Haven't you already made that?

Its not even the best pointless cylinder thing you've ever posted for christ sake, theres maybe 3 textures in the whole screenshot, you use abysmal HL2 models that light just as poorly in bright sunlight, and you have a huge decal that ends midway through the enormous brushwork tube.

I'm not trying to "hate on you, dawg" I'm just saying what you posted was pretty much a neat little expiriment that while that would probably be best served kept on your computer in a little folder called "compulsion management - cylindrical" and away from people who are ready and willing to pass esthetic judgement. Which leaves me wondering just what you expected, exactly?

edit: Yes you're not wrong Defrag. Then again everyone knows his work and this is not his best but at the end of the day he posted it and got some crit, I think honest.

These little visual tubes don't turn into maps, regardless and I think we see them at face esthetic value. Which in this case would be strange becuase there is very little.

What's the point in being so abrasive? You can actually critique something without it verging on the point of being abusive.

Sometimes people make stuff because they want to. I've seen JeanPaul's Black Mesa stuff and I was thoroughly impressed. I also liked the so-called 'pointless cylindrical' stuff he's posted in the past. Is it too much to just accept the fact that he likes making that stuff? If you don't like it, there are better ways to tell someone than to basically shit on what they're posting.

    sry

I just lost a really long starcraft match and was pissed

Looks good, but fmpone got a point :S

    edit:

Oh and defrag, The first cylinder map was awesome.. The second was great, the third one got a little repetitive... now this fourth one is a little boring... It's fine that he likes to do this stuff, but people getting bored by the same stuff had to happen sometime

IMO the purpose of a WIP forum is so that people can get suggestions on how to improve something (or sometimes just get some encouragement to help them stick with it).

It's one thing to post "I personally think you use a cylindrical theme too much" or "I think you can improve the theme by " and quite another to post "Its not even the best pointless cylinder thing you've ever posted for christ sake". You might view this as cutting through the bs, but really, I don't think there's a need for it. You can get your point across just fine without potentially offending someone.

Well, that's my take on it, anyway.

I agree to Defrag. Also, I like the pipearchitecture. It's characteristic for JeanPaul, but not directly in a negative way. I really don't see any point in being an ass about it.

Also, Sketch, use smaller lightmaps! Map looks good though! Really like how you take the time to work on your maps and stick with it.

fmp i dont get you. In the one moment you show a lot of tolerance for some oldschool duke 3d screens in the next moment you bash a mapper for something that in my opinion was a lot harder work. You should leave your personal feelings against other persons out of this thread and try to be constructive.

Personaly i like the cylinder. Doesnt look like it would offer cool gameplay but it is a interesting piece of architecture that would give me acrophobic feelings in real life.

Heres where you're wrong as far as I'm concerned. One person critiques someone using an old engine to its full potential and another person sees someone posting something thats using a new one to a lesser degree (to quote someone else) "fairly boring. There's not much to work with."

And it has nothing to do with personal opinions, I have alot of respect for JeanPaul's work and I've told him as much numerous times on forums and one on one conversations and I hope it stuck. Its you thats making things personal. And why you also choose to bring Quakis into this is beyond me and not appreciated, but speaks volumes.

fmp you can be an asshole sometimes but you dont seem to notice.

The way you express your crits is often offending and not constructive. I just want to point this out so you can reflect about your attitude problem. No offence.

    FPMOE is just sour, always.

And plus, guys, its only a side project for when I am out of ideas for Lambda Core, this whole thing took maybe 2 hours, max.

Tbf I'm inclined to deal with FMPONE, it'd be awesome if these kinds of things that jeanpaul makes were made into a map or at least a big setpiece, but it's just a big tube with nicely aligned textures, a pipe and a light_environment.

But then again, I wasn't fond of that Build engine stuff either :/.

I was sure I already saw this kind of structure somewhere on the internet.

And I were right, that's not the same thing, but there's definitely something.
