What Sentura said is true here... Don't be haters just for the sake of it.

i hated those water levels !

sonic is about runnning fast and collecting coins and running through loops

not about slow sticky core mechanics under water and breathing in air bubbles !

To me, those levels were always a major part of Sonic. They used to scare the hell out of me!

A lot of Sonic levels had these underwater mechanics, such as the Labyrinth Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Aquatic Ruin (?) Zone... Fun, in a really stressful way!

i always disliked the whole loop running fast thing. it seemed to unnecessary: you missed much of the levels (which was apparently the point ), you confused with where you were in the level progress and where you had to go, and it just wasn't fun. i mean, in the beginning i might have thought it was cool to see sonic run around in loops every single fucking level, but holy shit it got old fast.

the whole point i'm trying to make here is that sonic had some excellent level design in the first game, but it went downhill from there (see above). i think that's partly the reason for the failure of the series over time.

I always used to shit bricks whenever the countdown music began to start.

Sonic has always been too mentally fast for me — that video makes my head spin. Let me plod around slowly as Mario instead.

But he isn't just running right and doing loops in that video. Mad Gear Zone looks pretty much like a remake of Metropolis Zone except with giant cogs to run on instead of nuts. And I quite liked the sprawling layouts, not seeing everything first time is good for a short game and you knew if you were heading right you were going towards the exit (well, ignoring Sonic CD).

quite frankly running on cogs or on ground seems to be the same thing. so he has to move backwards to move the cog. WOW THAT'S AN AMAZING GAME MECHANIC

Water levels in Sonic were the PITA parts you were forced to play between totally awesome sprint-a-thons where you were moving at the speed of sound, doing loop-de-loops so fast the camera couldn't keep up, bouncing 60,000 ft. into the air off springs, smashing robots, and banging hot chicks.

Although I quickly realised what I was doing, I did actually start to explain what I felt a platformer could gain from a player-controlled moving platform with inertia that goes through a fixed route of obstacles.

looks sort of good. i'm glad they took pointers from the FIRST EVER SONIC GAME and not just the loops/bullshit sonic games that followed.
