Good move from bethesda yeah!
But no-one beats id, where they even release the source code!

Bethesda lost Daggerfall's source code ages ago, they couldn't release it even if they wanted to.
There's a source port/update in the works by a fan though! -
I will give it a try this weekend! Never played it before.

I spent like 2 hours trying to get this to work, finally got in, made an argonian and died on the tutorial rat.
Uninstalled.
