finally i played it yestarday, and it is still Max in a good way, but in my opinion there is too much cutscenes blending with actuall gameplay, i was so frustrated to shoot some guys, but instead every 3-4 min i have a cut scene (i dont like to skip stuff like that, but enough is enough)

animation are very cool, hit points on enemy body are nicly blended with animations, and it is looking very good during gameplay

artwise, as much as i've seen yet (i'm in chapter V) the graphics are not as spectacular as i was expecting (im playing Max on maxed settings) and it is looking very good but at some spots the locations are very poor (like someone before showed screen shot), i''ve seen assets with blending textures and one of those textures was hi res, and the other one was very low res and finall asset looked like crap (walls in old houses in NYC)

but still it is a nice game and i have loads of fun playing it so far

Be super-defensive. Just hang behind cover until you have slow-mo and take out enemies one-two at a time. Take your time. If I remember correctly the enemies never rush you, or atleast not most of them.

well there is that truck that just comes at you, plus those coming out of the plane. you need to be strategic about who you take out, some of them try to flank you so take them out first while watching for grenades with the middle guy. that's how i did it

that part was pretty easy, take out those when they are stepping out of the car, if someone is on foot don't bother about them till they are very close, your first priority should be that guy in the plain, the will shoot you even behind cover and ofcourse look out if that small cop is shooting grenades at you, us bullet time every time you are going out of cover

    Hiiiiiii

Game was really good. Did I just read that some reviewers were complaining about a game being TOO LONG?

Playing it now. Enjoying it but a few things really annoy me:

    - I hate how there's always someone yelling at you if you stop to explore a map a bit. "Hey common, let's go". Max Payne is supposed to be a lonewolf What I loved the most about the old games was that I could play them on my own pace, replay areas that I judged I didn't do well enough, jump off rooftops and load quicksaves soon after... There's none of this in this game.

    - Hordes and hordes of enemies. Killing enemies is not very fun because stunt jumps are weird and not as useful as in the old games. It seems like they tried to make them "realistic", having a start animation that takes 20% or so of the entire stunt jump time. This turns the game into just another cover shooter, forcing you to stay behind cover all the time.

    - I can never tell when I'm getting hit! Sometimes I'm exploring the map and die because I didn't realize I was being shot.

    - The art in the game itself is not bad, but the post-effects make everything look like a blurry mess. Specular/glossiness maps are super sharp, specially when it's raining. That makes the game look like Gears of War

    - Too much swearing. A bit of swearing is fun but when it's overdone it gets boring super fast.

Yeah Minos I agree with much of what you are saying.

Still I have to admit I felt compelled to finish it. Overall I appreciated the Rockstar touch. I beat the game tonight so I'm still digesting it. It had a lot of cinematic flair, and I mean that in a good way.

The end credits music that was used earlier in Act III was excellent and beyond the music itself, it added a lot to the tone because it matched the vibe pretty well. That said, the execution of the tone really depends on whether you accept Max as a cinematic character and that's hard to do in a game compared to a movie. Personally, I got over my early gripes about him and eventually grew to like him as a character.

Funny, earlier this year I had zero interest in this game. Now I would certainly recommend to any Max Payne fan or shooter fan looking for something edgy and not purely another military shooter. It's not the most innovative in gameplay, but this was a game I enjoyed more for the way it solidly presented its tone. Bravo, Rockstar. Bravo.

Was too lazy to check links earlier in the thread so I apologize if this is a repost:

been trying to play some MP with friends, getting everyone from a lobby into the same game is just pure luck, always someone that can't connect or gets dropped a few minutes into the game sometimes stucks on loading as well

few times I've been able to play have been cool though

PSA - If you haven't picked up the game yet, amazon is selling Max Payne 3 steam codes for $40 this month. Could have sworn they were going for $30 a week ago, though. Also not sure if it is restricted to any countries, but worth a look.

I agree with Izumo's thoughts on the cinematic aspects of the game, and it can be seen that a lot of effort has been put into conveying the development of Max's character. The cinematic part of the game, plus the score and the ambiance, is getting me through at the moment. This game felt a lot like a film from the get go, with me only taking over during firefights and exploration.

Some of the encounter design got to me, throwing the player right into an ambush even though I've left him behind a piece of cover. E.g. when you're on the roof of that building that's slowly falling to pieces I was sitting behind a piece of cover when MP3 ran a cutscene of a heavy walking up to the edge of the roof with an LMG, when control returns to the player you're standing up right in front of this guy's field of fire........ Come on! I guess we call these continuity goofs in the film industry

It also bummed me a bit that you've always got someone, or Max's narration, telling you to hurry up. Though I also enjoyed it because I believe it helped promote the sense of urgency in some levels. Still, I'd have liked a bit more time to soak up the environment and look around.
