Telltale are making a new Monkey Island game called Tales of Monkey Island

Lucasarts are internally remaking Secret of Monkey Island 1 (it'll probably be shit since it's lucasarts internally doing it)

Yeah, I'm really excited about Telltale's game. Not only is Telltale itself comprised mostly of ex-LucasArts staff, but they've brought in loads of people from the original games such as the original designers (Including Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert himself!), the guy who did the music for the first three games, etc.

I'm quite looking forward to the Monkey Island 1 remake too. While Guybrush looks a bit too much like a Hitler Youth recruit for my tastes, the graphics, new music, etc are wonderful. I've been fancying replaying Monkey Island 1 for a while, too.

I donno. I love the Monkey Island games but this new remake of the first one looks kinda ugly in places, and tbh I'd much rather just play the original for nostalgias sake. And the Telltale game? I donno, after MI3 there hasn't be a really good MI game, and I kinda doubt they can pull one off.

I think I'll just go back and play the old ones instead [/grumpy]

Just about at the end of Melee Island in the special edition now, and I have to say the work is really impressive. While I love the original to bits, when you flip between the new version and the old version the sheer lack of ambience and whatnot is quite striking. The fact that every scene now has (at least subtle) animation and ambience adds a lot to the atmosphere, and having not played the original in years it's great rediscovering all the dialogue with voices. Also a great job has been done of revamping the music and such.

What's really cool is how the remake opens up the game to new audiences as if it were new. My younger sisters have been playing it and loving it, whereas with the ancient-looking original they'd never have even considered it.

Some guy on another forum I use has been kind of taking the piss, though. Whereas LucasArts basically just redrew the background art and upped the resolution on the visual side of things, this guy has been doing some crazy experiments with 3D projection where he basically gets the original concept art (only a few were released) and then models it. Using techniques I can only begin to imagine the result is kind of breathtaking — especially the second video. Hit HD and full-screen to really appreciate it.

Aye, tis really impressive stuff. I've been playing the "Special Edition" MI1 on XBLA, and although I think its great to be able to lie down with a controller behind your head and play it (I do that alot ), then I'm not really digging the new visuals, especially the design of Guybrush just looks really irretating. In most cases I would play it in with the original graphics if I could get voice acting there . Would be awesome if they take notice from this and actually gives MI2:SE this kind of treatment, although I figure they're well into doing it in the same as the first one by now.

The Special Edition stuff is a mixed bag for me, I love some of the redrawn backgrounds, annoyed by the apparent laziness in some of them, and indifferent about how Guybrush looks. I switched between the two versions when I played.

Some people are working on getting the voices with the original version, looks like there will end up being two versions, one where it's enabled within the SE and one with the recorded dialog attached to the original version.

I really like the new visuals to be honest, although I do think Guybrush's sprite looks a bit obnoxious — yet I think he looks fine in the close-ups.

I think I'd find it really difficult to play the original MI1 after this, as the added ambience and voice acting adds so much to the experience.

Just found this on Digg: http://www.gossipgamers.com/monkey-isla ... ngine-mod/

Pretty cool. Is it the same project as the one on the first page here? Still, nice.

I got the remake on the weekend deal and I gotta say that I'm so disappointed. The voice work is kickass and adds a lot to the experience but the backgrounds are so sloppy and bad. The original game looks much better color wise imo.
