Got around to trying the demo:

Runs like shit. 20FPS on "Gamer" when Crysis 1 ran at around 30 on mostly High (some medium) options.

You die really fast, armor or no. Too fast to swing around and respond to somebody shooting you if you can't see them before they open fire.

Felt like there was mouse smoothing going on, because the low FPS made my mouse noticeably laggy.

Was there an extra map in the PC demo? The server I joined was cycling between the rooftop and "Pier 17". Pier 17 sucked, btw. Didn't like it at all. Rooftop was a way better map, though still confusing. Lots of cases where I was frustrated trying to get around obstacles to get to my objective, especially whenever I went inside that office area.

I felt less like a superman and more like a robot man. Like I was playing as robocop. In that Pier 17 map whenever I could hear fighting going on on a different floor than me on the building everyone was unless they were a sniper (in which case they camped across the pier in that building that was as far as I could see completely inaccessible without exposing yourself to the snipers or slowly working from spot to spot in cloak), I sighed and didn't even bother trying to go join it, because the slow, clumsy movement and fast deaths meant that unless people are fighting five feet next to me, I'm not going to be able to join that fight.

Just in general the maps felt too big for the player count. We had 9/10 guys and Pier 17 in particular felt big and empty. Even on the rooftops I never saw more than three people in a firefight at the same time, even around the dropship king of the hill thing.

The LMG was way overpowered compared to everything else. My K/D ratio doubled when I "unlocked" the Gunner.

I'm just gonna go back to Bad Company 2 now....

i don't mind criticism if it's legitimate. this guy says this:

    Quote

I'm on a course at university to become a video game programmer and I've programmed a few games and tools already, I analyse every game I have until it's no longer fun. Just so I know how it works underneath.

    then goes on to claim:

    - Crysis 1 used voxel rendering to make realistic hills and cliffs, Crysis 2 uses bill-boarded sprites of sky scrapers placed very far away.

both of which statements are false

    - the trees are now billboarded

that is the most hilarious statement i have ever read. does he think each leaf was modelled in crysis? when i think of abillboard i think of X cards, which is false in terms of what exists in crysis 2.

    - guns are huge

welcome to console fov. if you don't like it, change it, you're a hardcore video game programmer, i'm sure a config is within your realm

    - motion blur is like a console

    what does that even mean

    - water effects are worse

    they're identical, enjoy your opinions

    - skybox is made of 2d sprites

    no, it's not.

no idea why i responded to a faggot on another message board talking so much shit it physically pains me to read. perhaps we could refrain from linking to the ramblings of faggots in future, and maybe we can collectively keep my blood pressure down.

I guess you're in a bit of a bad mood when playing? but if I had 20 fps I'd be cheesed, it should run considerably faster than crysis 1.

IMO you shouldn't judge a fast paced FPS game beyond the fact it lagged for you, how can you comment on mouse lag, movement and controls if the game isn't even running close to a minimum 30 fps? Of course your going to bump into everything and get owned making the experience no fun at all!

I read some pretty ridiculous "crits" on the internet about the demo. The worst one is people complaining about AA.

i think it's true to say that people will complain about anything and everything. the people who actually enjoy a game seem to be few and far between these days.

I wasn't making a definitive damning of Crysis 2. I had another session and did a bit better, because I discovered the night vision mode that sees through cloak at the expense of making IFF a tiny bit harder. I was a bit more used to the controls but the server I was playing on had worse ping than before, I think it was German. Framerate still in the toilet, even when loading on Gamer (I was hoping that the low FPS was because stuff failed to change going from Advanced to Gamer without a restart of the game, since on Advanced I had the exact same performance).

I still don't like the Pier. Feels like that map needed a bunch of areas trimmed out of it, like the whole top floor of the mall area, and some of the crosswalks going down the middle of the floors, and I feel like the center water area needs to be the center of a circle instead of the outdoor area being a big U. The visual clutter on the outer edges makes seeing guys a bit of a hassle, especially the brown team (I think those are CELL).

I was in a bit of a bad mood, yeah. I was cooking chicken and my senile grandmother turned the oven off "for" me about 45 minutes in, delaying dinner by over half an hour as it had to warm up again to finish cooking the nowhere near done chicken.

Now that it's done though, this chicken's pretty good

Also some people from Mapcore should play together. Maybe you Crytek guys can show off some leet tricks in the maps lol

Edit: I didn't notice any AA things. The game actually looks basically the same on Gamer and Advanced for me, so maybe I'm just seeing a technical rather than performance issue. The lack of real options sure smarts though. There was a specific toggle in Crysis 1, I think the one that controls the detail of the volumetric clouds, that had a massive performance difference from me on medium vs high.

Looking at those settings, they going to make it look like quake 2?

They saved me about 5 FPS, but the lack of motion blur and increase in FOV (imo to the fish eye level) made the mouse lag feel way worse. At the end of the round I played with those settings I had a K/D of 2/16. Now I want to strangle someone, preferably the guy who posted them...

Just tried the MP demo with some friends after a hardcore sesh of BFBC2... It was very disappointing. It's just fast run and gun (but mainly run and die...) with no tactical gameplay at all. Probably wasn't intended to be like that though.

Also, I had no motivation to try and get unlocks. Maybe it'll grow on me if I try it again tomorrow.

Some people in the SA thread on this game were blaming the design of multiplayer on Crytek UK. Ha, man, I wish. Even without the framerate issue () COD style just isn't for me. If Crysis 2 multiplayer was like Timesplitters though? Holy shit. Thumping techno nonstop, shooting people's heads off, doom movement speed, awesome mode options instead of just deathmatch and koth...

Now I'm all sad there's no more Timesplitters games. Assholes on the internet reminding me of Free Radical/Crytek UK.

    I am bummed!

My precious customizable and dynamic Crysis has been turned into a blurred and inaccessible COD clone. I used to spend hours stalking people in tall grass in huge open ended battlefield type arenas whereas now I have more HUD than actual gameplay screen real estate, and the nearest player is 10 feet from me due to the counter-strike sized maps

Man, I fucking hate console simplification, especially when it destroys something that could have been beautiful.

I don't know if it's lag from the servers I'm playing on but it seems like I'm shooting people square in the face for 2 or 3 seconds straight, then they start firing back and I get insta-killed. Needless to say, very annoying.

Maybe they use armor mode and you don't?

I played a few rounds last night and found the crashed alien pod gamemode to be more enjoyable than team deathmatch. It picks up a lot of stuff from COD4 MP, but I found it easier to find my way around COD4 (and enjoy it for that matter) for reasons that others have mentioned before (small map, all these effects and details are too much at times, narrow FOV etc). The changes to the suit also take some time getting used to. I have to play it some more to formulate a proper opinion, but it does make me look forward to the SP!

It does seem a strange decision to me to release the multiplayer demo before the single-player demo. Whereas with a single-player demo people can be introduced to the gameplay and controls smoothly and in a nice, controlled manner, with a multiplayer demo people are thrust into a (probably laggy) server with loads of other (probably laggy) gamers who don't have a god damn clue what they're doing. And not only that, because there's no real tuition of how to play the game effectively it just devolves into deathmatch.

First impressions count a lot, and I can't think of a worse way of introducing people to Crysis 2 than using its multiplayer. I'm sure a lot of time has been spent on the multiplayer, but there're a lot of people who're properly anticipating the game because of its epic story-orientated trailers and such who're going to probably try the multiplayer demo out of desperation and be left stone cold.

Not that it bothers me personally because I'm just holding off for the proper game, but I'm seeing the effects of what I've described left, right, and centre. Rather than enjoying the game for what it is, everyone is too busy complaining about server/registration problems and the inherently chaotic gameplay multiplayer brings — and any technical issues such as FOV and anti-aliasing are made even more conspicuous because there's no immersive story/scripting distracting people.

I'm usually the person who uses armor mode the most on my team (2nd unlock of armor mode so it's even stronger) so I don't know what it is.

I thought I had my trees looking good in CE2, they look jaw dropping (most of the video does) in that clip.

You need user feedback to realize PC players like options? Half the people I see talking about the demo are launching it through a .bat file to get all those launch options peris posted in.
