I'm not going to pay attention to any of the details regarding the leak. I like to start out like a new born baby when I play most games, knowing next to nothing about them. I'm not sure if I'm more excited for the game or sandbox 3 though, a little over a month isn't a long wait

That's bad for you guys at Crytek, but don't forget that piracy isn't just among the PC community.

I didn't play the game (I can't even run it on my rig anyway), but I've seen some videos and I must say I'm impressed by the parkour thing, it reminds me of ME. By the way the Manhattan artistic direction reminds me a lot of some maps of Bionic Commando, which is a good thing.

Guys, let's keep it together please.

It's really sad to read some of the opinions of certain people, but well i guess you are entitled to it. You can also tell these people are the same that never shipped a single title before, and does not know what is it like to dedicate 2/3 years of your life, 7 days a week for a project, and see it get stolen from your hands like this. It is not easy so please, have some respect for the people that worked very hard on this.

I feel for you guys over at crytek, but one question bothers me. Are you guys financially invested in this title or something? Because if you are just emotionally invested, then I think you are overreacting. The purpose of creating the game was to please thousands (hopefully millions) of people with an excellent game. And copied (stolen) or not, the game will hopefully do just that

Also, not to shit all over your parade, but your game (and all your hard work) didn't get stolen. It got copied (and most likely enjoyed). Theres a big difference.

You're acting like you've built a car with your own two hands, only to get it stolen right before you finished it and you never get to drive it. Leak or no leak, people are gonna pirate games no matter how hard you try to fight it. Pirates gonna pirate, but loyal gamers will purchase.

As for this leak, im not gonna play it. I've heard the first few levels are very buggy.. Gonna purchase the whole thing when it comes out.

What does this Leak mean to the regular employee?

    • [*:42er6qpk]We don't get to show our stuff in the best shape - not to go into detail but I've seen alot of content that is out of date in this build.
In the up to three years some of us have spent with the project this is not just the next game we ship, it's our portfolio, our sweat, our blood, our pride, our sleepless nights, our days not spend with family or friends, our shifted vacations, our 3am in the morning chicken nugget in front of the screen sessions, our fights for certain features.

After spending so much time on this, it should be up to us to decide when the public gets to see it and in what shape. As a customer, tempted by a pirated leak, please bring the patience and wait for our delivery. Customers have a responsibility and a code of conduct as well. For each developer "grunt" it's a special relationship with every gamer out there, and just like in every relationship you should respect and wait for the other and not abuse his weakness and take advantage.

    • [*:42er6qpk]Financially it means that our current Project might sell less copies. - I've read a good hundred posts these days of people who state they preordered the game now and it makes me feel good that these people could be convinced to buy the game.

On the other hand there's enough people who will refuse to pay for what they can get for free and even worse, people who start bitching about the quality of the build and project it on the finished product. Less copies means less income for everyone who stays for the next project, since the bonuses are based on sales. By pirating the game and seeding on a torrent (therefore helping others to pirate it) you cut a few seconds of the next vacation of someones family inside the company, a slice from someones bread for dinner, a few bricks out of a house someone is building.

    • [*:42er6qpk]Future wise - even if you buy the full game in the end, as long as the big bosses at the publishers see the amount of pirated copies they will more likely cut fundings for other projects all across the industry. It will be harder for everyone to find a new job that is financially secure and it will keep shareholders from investing into new projects and companies.

Sure, "XBox games can be leaked and pirated as well" is what everyone says. Truth is, it's much harder, thanks to new Disc-Formats, new Console Cycles etc.. So apart from general distrust in the industry, the PC will be seen as it's worst part.

    • [*:42er6qpk]Motivation loss. Especially comments like Seldoon's
"Hey idiots, you couldn't even keep your game safe" or
"It's not our fault you put it on the internet for free" or
"Oh, guess this is their newest PR trick" and
"This is how they baild out of PC Market".

Because someone in a 500+ people production leaked the game (or even a hacker or whatever), we get blamed all together by our customers.
And especially if people here or on polycount do this it's disappointing. One would expect everyone around here knows how much work this is and all of the above reasons. Obviously we take it personal here if someone gives us shit or tries to justify piracy.

One more point: People claiming we deserve this/it just happened because we didn't deliver the PC-Demo yet. This is totally bullshit - obviously we want to give everyone a fair look at the game, but it's up to us to deliver a sneak-peak at the point where we feel like it. Getting a demo at the time where you feel like it is not a birth-given right.

I totally understand your first point there, but I don't think this will have a financial impact. Because of all the hubub you'll probably sell more, don't worry

Most of comments I've read has been very positive and heartfelt support for the game, so don't let the bad comments bring you down^^

PS sentura you made me laugh, you are totally correct

wait... so because crysis 2 has been leaked, you cannot use screenshots/reels/etc. for your own portfolios post release, because of a pre release leak? i would assume that you would still be able to publish that content post release. about not showing stuff in the best shape - i'm sure most companies don't care about early releases and placeholder work, and if they do, they're not worth working for.

i am, like skjalg, also pretty sure that the game would sell equal or more copies than if it hadn't been leaked. piracy is still rampant on the PC, so there would undoubtedly be a market loss there (i am assuming there is a market - gabe newell said something along the lines of, "if your game gets pirated, you have unsatisfied customers", and i believe that).

just chill out; it's done. no amount of screaming or blaming or anger is going to cause a time reversal that will prevent the leak.

I've yet to hear anything about where the build is even from (officially), just because it's a dev build doesn't mean it was purposely uploaded by an employee of crytek or EA, even if that is the most sensible guess. People always jump to conclusions and then base their opinions on it.

The amount of assumptions people make is truly amazing, wouldn't of expected it here but as you can see it's not the case.

I've just watched a little bit of footage and man, that shit looks so real it's overwhelming.

The game didn't look very interesting (visually speaking) on the screenshots released so far, but after seeing everything in motion I'm more than hyped for this game.

Wow, Seldoon's comments in this thread are kind of disgusting.

Why do you have such contempt for a developer that has always worked so hard to support the PC platform, even though most publishers/developers hardly bother with it due to the extensive piracy and hardware complications? Have you forgotten how Crytek themselves were burned with Crysis 1, which was widely reported to have been one of the most pirated games ever with a ratio of something like 15 illegal downloads per sale? If those people had bought it instead Crysis 1 would have been a much more profitable game, which is only good for us gamers because it means more similarly awesome games.

Christ, man. Have more support for your developers. It's almost like you're angry that Crytek dare be upset about the fact a project they've spent years slaving over has been leaked in an unfinished state. The way you're mocking them with the and such is downright shameful. It's one thing to be upset with publishers because they're often quite faceless and money-orientated, but to start attacking developers — the kind of passionate people this forum is full of — is another thing entirely.

"With almost depressing inevitability" lol. Jim Sterling is basically the Glenn Beck of games.

That reminds me, did they ever stop however all those 360 games were getting leaked? I haven't payed attention to it in a few months but I remember people saying it was during disc printing that copies were getting ripped, on just about every notable release, weeks early.

The attitude of people on that torrent site. I used to pirate when I was 12-14 its pretty much what got me into PC gaming, I can't even remember how I justified it back then, I think it was just because my pocket money was none existent, but as soon as i got into it if I couldn't afford the latest release I just bought the 3 for £10 from the bargain bucket, the games in those buckets were epic, got some of the best PC games ever from them. Then I would occasionally fork out for a new release. And since steam has gone big I have pretty much exclusively bought all my games from there when they do sales.

I genuinely done understand pirating games anymore, you can get brilliant PC games for so cheap ie, bargain bucket, steam, humble indie bundle, etc.

Excellent article on Destructoid there, pretty much sums up all the thoughts I've had regarding piracy for years. I have absolutely no tolerance for game piracy, at least if you're of working age. I'm glad he takes the time to tear apart the 'But it's not really stealing!' argument, which has been an annoyingly weak straw man thrown into piracy arguments so many times it's not even funny.

Of course the reason the leak hasn't been pirated too much is because everyone knows it's an inferior, outdated product and they're just waiting for the final release to pirate.

I used to pirate loads of games when I was a broke student, and back then I had loads of time to play games and absolutely no cash at all to purchase them with.

Now its the opposite; I have almost no spare time but loads of cash. I usually purchase games, then dont even end up finishing them.

Back then I only saved up and purchased games I knew I needed a key to play online with. (HL/Source/BF/SC/WoW/Hon etc). Now the only games I pirate are games I've bought but cant find the installer for anymore (usually old games like settlers 2 or tycoon deluxe) or games that I have bought, but because the norwegian mail is slow as fuck I didnt get it on the release date. (sometimes i get so hyped up I cant wait to play ). Thankfully Steam and b.net usually helps here. I think the last game I pirated (right after I bought it) because I couldnt wait was bioshock.. And I didnt finish that one either :S

I traded in my xbox for a ps3 because I didnt have time to play anything on it. I purchased uncharted 2, Brotherhood and some other games. I havent finished any of them...

I need more time. Where can I buy time?

Piracy is like environmental pollution or global warming. You do it - it's fine. Everyone does it - still no immediate effect. Everyone keeps doing it - wait a few years - you successfully destroyed most of the system. And then it takes ages until it recovers. And no one wants to be the one blamed for it.

We educated society to act on immediate responses and short attention spans. Most of these kids don't understand they were the ones killing Mirrors Edge, they are the ones destroying all the progress in the market and they will be the ones suffering from a lack of new games.
