Shit sounds terrible, I know there are loads of Grinners on here, I hope it's not as bad as it sounds!
Rumour: Mass layoffs hit Grin?!!
-
-
So, Any mapcoreans being laid of?
Damn, sorry guys... -
I don't see why. I've heard that Bionic Commando is doing well, and surely making Wanted and Terminator didn't break the bank, since combined they're less content than most single games.
-
Atleast Steppenwolf was the first to report in that job census thread.
This sucks

-
Serves you right for half-baked Terminator Salvation VG!
Nah, seriously though, I feel sorry for anyone laid off. This happens quite often recently

Anyone besides Stepp affected?
-
As always let us know if we can help in searching for a next gig

-
Good luck you guys.
-
Depressing stuff

Hope you find another gig soon Stepp!
-
What Peris said. Its purely based on when you got hired. We were ten level designers in Stockholm and they fired the last two who got hired. Same in the other departements. But i don't know whats more depressing losing your job or stay in a company that fired so many of your friends and lost some of the best people. It's one of the most sad things that i have witnessed in my life because the people at Grin were really close together. I think everybody cryed at least a little yesterday.
-
Losing your job is very unfortunate, I've been a victim twice now, although both were not game studios (not my career path, I'm focusing on web/graphic design). Best of luck to those dealing with this recent setback.
Hypothetical side note: I was thinking Mapcore could/should come together and make a professional game design studio... called... um... er... Mapcore?

Damn stepp, this is really a dark day...

Anyways dude, there's not much you can do aside from thinking what are you going to do next! Start to get your folio / cv ready, and send some e-mails! and/or give furyo a word, I'm sure he can pull some strings for an old mapcorean!
-
Ahh that sucks for those guys at Grin! I really feel sorry for all the Mapcorians working there.
While it probably looks dark for those fired right now, you shouldn't worry too much. There will always be a job for those of you who got the skills, which includes all the Mapcorians working there.
-
Sorry to hear about all this guys
Hopefully your jobs will be more secure for the future. -
sorry to see you go stepp, maybe even more so given our previous feuds. it's always a letdown to be sacked, but i'm sure you'll find a new gig. here's to hoping it'll be as good as your time at grin.
-
Really sucks to hear that, grin was one of the companies I always wanted to apply to if things didnt work out at ubisoft for me... But I'm quite sure you are gonna find a new job in no time Stepp!
-
Sad to hear stepp, and others what about philip?

-
ahhh that sucks stepp. I have faith you should be able to find another job. -
Man that's a bummer... Seems kind of strange to just lay off the new guys, but I've never worked in a studio so I don't know any of the common practices. Best of luck to anyone affected, I'll hope for the best
-
Wow this is really a shock. Grin was doing so good and now they release two mediocre(not in art or style) games and loads of layoffs...
What excactly happened?

A post I found on gaf
QuoteIt is very likely GRIN received the full development budget plus some margin paid on a milestone basis across the length of the project. That budget would have had some margin baked into it, so GRIN would likely have made some money on the development with some possibility of royalties on the back end.It is possible before release there may have been an expectation of rolling on to sequel or derivative products, but with the apparent low sales those opportunities if they existed will have disappeared leaving them with spare teams. Royalty payouts would be unlikely.
And in this environment, there are not a lot of licensed projects floating around that haven't been placed, and those that are available are hotly contested. Not an easy time to place spare teams in a hurry.
It is possible this was a factor also.
All speculation of course. There could be many factors at work here and the full story is certainly not known.
