highly doubt this happening....so what if someone connects from a college network? they're going to block the entire campus from playing hl2...doubtful

i doubt this is even going to happen anyway.....it takes more then one person to look up the ip's and then have them banned off valve....and i highly doubt any game publisher, designer or anything having to do with the game will invest resources into something they know they could never control.

ip banning is stupid and doesn't work. we have that problem with forumplanet.

what valve will do is ban the account which means the email address and any associated cd keys.

the account is a better idea.....but aside from the cd key i dont understand how you could figure out if someone is using a warez copy or a legal. eventually someone will figure out how to limit (impossible to stop) illegal downloading....but i doubt it will happen during the time of half life 2.

give it time, if people already figured out how to forge steam tickets, they can figure out how to crack steam out of hl2. Won't be long

Actually, something is happening. The warez-group, EMPORIO, who released the cracked version of HL2, was busted today.

    cool...

I think this is the first step towards killing off warez stuff...

    BUT!

since gabe actually said that they are the ones that released that in order to track down ppl, why would he do that? Then nobody will download THEIR cracked version once the word spreads out (there are allways 5-6 different ones from different crackers)...

perhaps he just lied, pretending to it, so no-one will dare to download that one, now he just have to figure out how to stop ppl from downloading the other 5...

Maybe im wrong, but im not so sure if valve actually would do this, because if they had, why would they say it?

/sigh... reminds of the people who said valve intentionally leaked the source in order to delay the release. gawd, gimme a break.

I heard the version from that group was fake.

Anyway, as long as I don't see any statement about this directly from a Valve employee I won't believe anything.

As far as I know that warez group with Emporio & Madoxxx existed. One guy at our irc channel pasted these lines yesterday:

offcial statement posted on #1.6 @ efnet time gmt +1

    .:20·26·49:. ( @Cerian ) LISTEN UP

    .:20·26·59:. ( @Cerian ) We don´t have a word from MaddoxX yet

    .:20·27·07:. ( @Cerian ) so DON´T spread RUMORS!!!

.:20·27·12:. ( @Addictive ) but we KNOW he is busted

But again, who can be sure...

no way, you mean these are logs on irc from a guy who most likely has no idea whats going on when he says "i dont want to spread any rumors or anything"

    yeah.

and as we all know, its IMPOSSIBLE to fake irc logs...

    ... just a thought

Those lines were copy&pasted on our channel, i don't really know where they are originally from. So these are _possibly_ just rumors about rumors about rumors...

who cares anyway....one pirating group goes away another comes out....plus you dont have to be a group to pirate a game...any 12 year old girl can figure out how to start a seed for hl2

Well it's not very big news, but i always get this warm and fuzzy feeling when piraters go down.
