i have been playing with 1280x1024, max everything, 16x AF

it runs fine except when theres a lot of water, in which case teh lag is unbearable

They always explode when I shoot them down...

They explode to pieces and the pieces stay.

No, if they are near ground they sometimes crash intact instead of exploding.
