    hello you crazy mappers!

this is a contest with its roots in mapwars. for those of you that didn't get the chance to know about mapwars, here's the premise:

small fast contests between few people. you get a little time to prepare a map for gameplay and visuals, then it's off to playtest. each mapper gets a vote, and the winning map will receive... the pride of winning a mapwar!

    contests will include

    • [*:1vpwzf9w]60-90 minutes for making your map in accordance with a selected theme (theme presented at contest start)
      [*:1vpwzf9w]up to 10 contestants at a time
[*:1vpwzf9w]10 minute playtests for each map after making them, one vote per mapper
[*:1vpwzf9w]simple engines, not much extra work required (goldsrc/source, suggestions welcome)
      [*:1vpwzf9w]IRC channel: contest @ gamesurge.net

since these contests are small and fast, there can be a new one every week or whenever people feel like it. there are no requirements to join, and there are no limits to how many contests we can have. IRC attendance will be mandatory as it is much easier to get info out to people that way. for the first couple of contests, there will be a list of attendees. after that, it's just whoever shows up in the channel at starting time.

contests start at 21:00 CET/20:00 GMT.

I'll try to do both dates.

(re: engine, I think most people have Source SDK setup already so I think we'll have to use that; who still has a GoldSrc VHE setup anymore, really?)

Well it only takes 5 minutes to set up, but I agree.. a small 1024x1024 room in source would be most awesome =)

I'm not able to map for Source until I get my PC (by the end of this month) so I can only map for goldsrc

So... are we really using goldsrc for the first one? If so everyone should already start to download and configure the tools. For those who are lazy to dig around the web looking for the tools I´m posting direct download links here:

hmm i downloaded all those old school tools and some wads from the internet but hammer wont let me make new maps because it claims i don't have any textures available ... anybody know about this issue ?! maybe we shoudl stick with source after all even though i would have loved to really kick it old school and party like its 1998 !

/edit never mind restarted hammer now everything seams to work fine

Yeah i definately would do that for goldsource !! For the nostalgia feel, plus, that I have all the editing tools already installed for HLdm

the first contest will be classic goldsource/hldm. i'd advise everyone to try out and make sure that tools etc. work before sunday. this includes compiling and testing!

EDIT: if anything fails, we'll move onto source/hl2dm. (theme will stay the same)

I think all of us should use the same wad as well. Any suggestions?

I reckon Warby/Peris might have quite a few old school wads, what about it?

whichever wads we use, we all use. i'd appreciate if we could get a big wad of wads together so we'd only have to download one. standard wads are also included (if you don't like them, then say so by voting differently).

CHECK i am all set to go was quite a hassle though

i think we should use hl.wad only ! and make it a specific theme of the contest to try and make your map look as LITTLE as hl.wad as possible basically find the least over used texture in there and create a new theme from that

Hm.. shouldn't be too hard to create something with the old hammer when you know the new one, right? :S

Otherwise I'll have to stick to the 2nd date I guess.

thx for teh linkz minos btw.
