I wouldn't recommend any of the smaller countrys for a first time visitor of europe. I believe italy, france, germany, spain, greece and maybe scandinavia is exactly what a american wants to see the first time he comes here.
If i will ever get interested in traveling america i would start with New York, Washington etc. not some obscure insider places that i haven't heard before to put this in perspective.
Sindwiller - i was only referring to my lack of knowledge of touristic spots in these regions, not that there ain't any.
Speaking of Croatia, i've heard Split is very nice. It is purely a tourist/vacation spot, though.
My sister spent awhile in the Czech Republic and said it was one of her favorite European countries she had ever been to.
I've only been to England, Scotland, and France. I enjoyed them all, but the culture was too similar. Spain is next on my list, either that or some eastern european country.

i was implying that the culture wouldn't much different than that of america, and therefore might not be as interesting as other countries. however, you're obviously right that he shouldn't go anywhere but the heartland of europe since that's where everything good and right and true comes from and everything else is the land of thievery, death and murder. piss off.

Wales is, as the rest of Great Britain, totaly awesome in terms of landscape. However I found south England and North scotland to be much more appealing in terms of cultural sightseeing.
You should also look into travelling iceland. They have a pretty damn financial crisis atm but the country is made of win. It's right on the way if you fly back to america or before you get to europe and it really has some of the greatest nature you'll ever see.
I'm hopefully getting my camera for christmas so I'll endeavour to bring more of Wales to mapcore 
There's loads of cultural crap in Wales you just have to know where to go to find the good stuff. Although I totally love Scotland though. If you have to go somewhere go to Sctoland.

Sentura you know what just go and fuck yourself. You have to make a argument out of everything on mapcore. I said it before you are a troll. I still wait for the day that you will participate in a thread without playing someone else down in your guileful ways. It boggles my mind that not everybody has realised yet what an huge asshole you are.

Anyway, the UK is great. Places like Dux posted can be found throughout the UK, Wales would probably be slightly unnerving to a newcomer, especially the further you get away from the border. Scotland is nice but as soon as you go higher than Glasgow/Edinburgh its a million miles to anything remotely civilised. Englands pretty compact and an hour on the bus can make a whole world of difference.
Perhaps its worth noting (for possible hostility towards me), I am of Persian descent... granted, it's not much of a problem here in the states, ironically, as most people think I'm Mexican (living in Texas). 
I'm assuming that most Europeans are educated enough to actually realize I'm NOT Mexican, so how would you say most people treat Middle Easterners there? The same degree of discrimination as in the states?
And I highly appreciate the wealth of information as far as destinations go. I'm definitely not too enthusiastic about going to the Balkans with its volatile situation, but in any case, keep it coming!

it depends on where you go really. denmark is one of the more xenophobic places in europe (as far as an entire country can be xenophobic within legality), but it's usually more a quiet arrogance in the air than someone slagging you down the street. people are apathetic.
Spain's probably the most racist place in the EU, but you should be OK if your not black or Lewis Hamilton

No big difference there I guess. In Western Europe, people won't make a big deal of it if you're not culturally Persian. In Eastern Europe, people might think that you're an American of Roma or Armenian descent or something, which can happen. Not that anybody would give a crap. Just tell them you're from America.

I dunno, just when I was kicking around Llanberis and the like it felt really unwelcoming being English, let alone foreign. Everyone just looked at you because you weren't speaking Welsh and then muttered to themselves in Welsh. The countryside is nice though and provided you can read the signs quick enough fairly easy to get around (hate how the languages swap around on the signs...Welsh first, no English first, no Welsh!)
