Have you tried environmental design in a 3d modeling program like Maya? It's certainly a significant part of the industry, I think.

    or XSI by example.

Hammer and radient are very similar apart from radient is completely manual when it comes to portaling and also features patch meshes (for making curved walls / pipes etc).

A version of radient with Hammer's texture allignment tools and displacements would be fantastic.

Anyhoo you should be able to go from hammer to radient and vise versa pretty easyily although I would reckomend getting to grips with hammer first as radient's interface isn't very begginer friendly.

Source is apparently super ultra cheap to license and gets used for stuff like edutainment games. There's about half a dozen "real" videogames either made or coming out in Source third party. VtmB, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Postal 3, Sin: Episodes Emergence, Zenoclash, etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_engine

They're doing better than ID licensing right now, actually

I haven't heard any news of anyone licensing Cryengine. Maybe once their console versions are ready.

I was thinking about this quite some time ago. As far as FPS engines go, UT3 dominates 3rd party liscenses by a long shot. Due to it's scalability/portability and non reliance on direct X it appears on all sorts of platforms. Source and IDtech don't come close.

Here's some details I got from wikipedia in june this year (wikipedia takes forever to load through work firewall so can't check for updated lists). There were no details for Cryengine or IDtech5 at the time I got this info.

Like others have mentioned, learning a 3d package would probably be beneficial regardless of what engine your working with. I don't work in the industry but that makes sense to me.

that list wasn't complete in june either. esp when it comes to education I know a good hand full of universities with CE2 or Source at hands. And as pointed out in the Midway Thread it seems UE3 is currently losing a lot of studios (basically every Midway Studio could be affected atm)
