It's so insane no word can describe exactly how totally unreal this all is.I have a theory about how societies will sooner or later react towards these acts, this one being the most insanely pointless and stupid of a long list of "consequential uncivilities". You can see in certain countries a resurgence in politics of the need to educate people better, specifically on how to act in a society in a respectful way. Certain countries are thinking of implementing an obligatory civil service to your nation (in case you don't join the army).

Well here's my theory. This won't be enough, and after all is said and done and this is put in place and such events still occur, the outcry from the large majority of the population will force politicians to vote laws that will temporarily or permanently revoke any of your civil rights as a citizen.

One of the main argument in the "vote now" campaigns is that voting is a right and a duty, this kinda message is getting across, and when it's finally sunk in that your entire citizenship in any country means you have rights as well as duties, societies will willingly take away your former if you don't respect your latter. People right now all too often expect to be given things without thinking twice about their own role in society. That's individualism for you. The backlash as always will go too far the other direction, but it will come.

you know, you could also just "ban" black friday. if a holiday results in people getting killed every year, you might as well just remove it. saves you the trouble of getting your civil rights removed.

No, you can't. [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif] I don't say that as often as other people (Americans), but I didn't know you could just go Soviet Russia on that one.

you know what i really dislike? when people tell me, "no, you can't" without a reason. i don't see the problem in some sort of prohibition and/or fining of black friday, if this is a persistent problem.

Well, as for the enforceability in the United States, you have a) a raging bunch of firms who would never let go of such an opportunity to make quick profit, b) a lot people who'd protest against regulations such as said one. As for the viability of such a prohibition: The state would have to check the majority, mostly big ones, of shops - obviously not all, since that's neither doable, nor feasible - whether they have discounts on that day; or, in a much more moderate regulation, police would have to control the crowd in front of all the shops. That is, after all, too big of an effort to prohibit a hooray-day for consumerism and firms - especially in the United States.

oh it's feasible, especially with having police guarding large outlets; assuming that they themselves choose not to follow what would be a law by then. last time i checked, the law still has the final say in this matter. if people are getting killed over trivialities, it's certainly up to the law to make sure that they don't, one way or another.

you're forgetting how much power a government actually has in contrast to how much it is exercising of said power.

Some stores in Japan have police controlled queues every weekend. I'm pretty sure America could manage this outside the larger stores for one day of the year.

Evidently we didn't rub enough off of the British Queuing System whilst we were in control of America.

They had a cop at every major store in my town that friday. I didn't go that early, though... I hope it wasn't anything like that video.

I hope our current economic situation will stop people from being such consumer whores.

...Now doesn't that make fuckin' sense! But you really can't do that on black friday unless the stores bend over backwards handing out numbers. Sometimes people wait in line for the store to open days in advance...It wouldn'y be hard to have an employee keep track of who got there first..etc. No way you could handle it like at a deli.

There were cops EVERYWHERE where I was on black friday. I think the place in New York where the incident occured was a poorly policed area.

Well one thing is clear, there is clearly a need for more order and security for events like this. This should have been supervised by local police like any other major event with huge crowds stuck in a tiny area. You can say anything you want about this not being feasible for the stores because they want to sell as much shit as possible but it doesn't matter. People's safety should always be number one priority. Even if it makes it a more pain-in-the-ass experience.....at least you don't end up dead or in hospital or with somebody's brains on your sole.

There's a little machine that prints out a number when you press the button and then you wait until your number comes up. That's how it like in banks and post offices here in CH (and probably in most shops in Sweden, too). Although you could get even more retarded and just fight over the numbers...

Only problem with that is that is that all the wares need to be behind a counter, and the employees pick them for the customer. Destroys the whole "walk around in shops and look for stuff" thing.

If it's only for payment, the enterance and stuff is still a problem.
