As Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider Underworld heads out to store shelves this week, publisher Eidos has tasked UK PR firm Barrington Harvey with managing the review scores, resulting in journalists being asked to hold off on negative reviews

Thats so stupid, especialy considering that the game got rather positive reviews anyways and the demo was actualy quite fun.

I'm surprised there are still people in the industry surprised by this kinda business protocols...embargos on reviews and previews (unless the score is high) have always been around it seems to me....It doesn't make the practice any more right or wrong (except to the eyes of the shareholders) but surprising? Hardly...

hey guys, i've got an idea: instead of making awesome games, let's instead create a gigantic hype machine and hold off reviews from all companies! i'm sure it'll work better than actiblizzard's cashcow strategy! customers love getting it up the ass.

why not just get better game designers to ensure the games do not suck? is it really that hard? i mean, there are companies that have never released bad games, and they seem to be doing alright... so what gives? is that extra money really worth the entirety of your reputation as a publisher?

i just finished it its a good game none of this is necessary !

i just remembered something that david fincher said on the se7en or figth club commentary:

    it went something like this:

you know what i hate ? those marketing people at the studio who get an advanced screening of a close to final cut and than they act like its a complete disaster and its up to THEM to fix it no matter how good the material is that they just saw.

I'm well aware of these practices (If you're referring to me). However you rarely (If ever) hear about this, someone definitely went outta their way to make a point with this. Or maybe that guy from Gamespot was just pissed about the things that happend last year and wanted to stir up some trouble again.

What he said. As stupid as it is, this is common business practice in the industry unfortunately. Especially with big corporations.

the joke's on them. if they want to be labeled as publishers who do everything to sell their games rather than making good games, let them. the more we get this out, the more we can show them that "good" business practices aren't that good when customers learn about them. this does in no way go over whatever work you do, but i feel it might damage the reputation of a given game as much as it does that of a publisher.

This is so silly, the games industry is such a joke sometimes. Underworld has been well received anyway, PCGUK gave it a "Must Buy" rating and commented on how spectacular the environments are.

Maybe it's normal for big game dev's like EA or Eidos because they cannot release a big title again and again and it's really not bad game but many gamers used to say that it's crap just because it's old title made again with nothing better except new story, enemies etc. It's true but there's no time to make something better...

I'm mad on all of this "new industry practises" like hurry up with progress and let some bugs came into project because game should be made in one year... All that stuff is made for money, really big money worth buying reviews and other PR / marketing shit. I hate all that lies heard from PR guys...

When I'm done with part of my work (Level Design) I'm on a lookout for every little review about the game to see is it was cool, what looks crappy and many other things that makes an art - not a typical games factory workers to release the product, but an artists that want to see the honest reviewer's score...

This is a really horrible trend in the industry, and as far as I can tell it's effecting damn near EVERYTHING big-name. GTA4 and Fallout 3 got the same treatment, no reviews whatsoever until release day, even though they were received wonderfully. It's like the publishers refuse to allow anything but their overpaid, over-corrupt PR hype machine to effect gamer's knowledge of the game, even if the other's words are positive.

Do you think this method is just another incentive for people to download more instead of buy?

    Hey now

Between Jeff Gerstmann, Halo 3 review kits, publisher blacklisting mags and sites for negative press and buying off reviews with early access scoops, and stories like this, Fallout 2, MGS4 reviews banned from mentioning certain aspects, etc., there REALLY isn't much defense of the general industry PR.
