Yea it’s a shame, I personally did not enjoy the game that much when I played the beta, but I think that’s just me. The game did have a lot of issues at launch like the servers begin down for days, more of a Sony issue than the developers though. Having said that it’s a lot of work to make a level in the game and I don’t think that would appeal to a lot of people. There was talk about a PSP version but Sony may be rethinking the entire IP at the moment.

We do know EA are going to allow DICE to make another Mirrors Edge though which is good. They need to remove guns completely and have less combat in general.

It's not doing too badly — i's actually sold well over a million units worldwide (Gamasutra focuses on the US). It seems to be selling significantly better in Europe, for whatever reason.

It is a shame it's not absolutely soaring off the shelves, but I guess that's to be expected with a title that's so unique and out of the ordinary. I think Sony will continue to push it hard though, especially because of the game's timeless nature (in fact as it ages it gets better due to more levels, more free/paid DLC, etc). I'm still regularly seeing TV ads and stuff for it.

Unfortunately Mirror's Edge is way behind it in the sales department:

Truly does seem to be a flop.

How are the sales compared to the other ps3 only games?

If I had a PS3 (lol) or it was released for 360, I'd hit it no doubt

I couldn't tell you off hand st0lve (would have to delve into VGChartz), but I can say from first-hand experience that there's a massive amount of levels and whatnot in the game produced by other people — and many of them have special objects created by their authors that you can use yourself once you beat the level, such as a gigantic tank.

I don't know how many people are actually playing, but I don't think I've ever seen so much user-made work in any game before; you can also always get some people to join you so you can have online co-op with four people in any level you choose, which is in itself an awesome feature not really seen before in a platform game.

Whatever the sales are (which seem healthy), it's got an incredibly active community. I wouldn't let any sales concerns put anyone off getting it, and having been consistently enjoying it for weeks now I heartily endorse this game.

Lucky for you st0lve, I'm a sucker for these things and compiled sales numbers of some PS3 exclusives for comparison (courtesy of vgchartz):

    Motorstorm: 3.7m (worldwide)

Motorstorm - Pacific Rift: 0.35m according to VGchartz BUT according to the development studio, it has already passed the 1 million units mark, so there is an obvious discrepancy there (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/m ... lion-sales).

    Resistance: 3.35m

    Resistance 2: 0.72m

    MGS4: 3.63m

    Lair : 0.37m (excluding Europe)

    Heavenly Sword: 1.3m

    Warhawk: 0.47m

    Ratchet and Clank 5: 1.47m

    Gran Turismo 5 - Prologue: 2.45m

    Littlebigplanet: 1.1m

If the MGS4 addons are priced anything like the Street Fighter ones, I'm not interested.

Well, both Motorstorm and Resistance were the first games right? And they even sold with the consoles, so them being that "high" is expected.

GT5 and MSG4 are popular series, so that's also expected.

I guess LBP will have a lot higher numbers, atleast here in Norway LTB is 24/7 on the telly, and it looks like a "kids" game, so probably a lot of parents will buy it for their kids with a PS3.

It isn't doing badly, but it isn't exactly flying off the shelves either. Maybe it's a bit unfair to compare it with Gears of War 2, since that's a sequel and can leverage from the success of the first game, but it has been out for roughly the same time and surpassed the 3 million mark. That doesn't even include Japan, where LBP is being sold, it is selling more in North America than LBP worldwide. It has to do with the install base too of course and maybe I'm comparing apples and oranges here, but considering the importance that has been given to each title, in terms of marketing money etc. I think it has some merit.

Maybe that is exactly the problem - because I think parents will rather get their kids a Wii or DS instead, whereas the broader, more mature audience finds appeal in racing and shooting games, of which there are plenty to choose from on the 360. Again, it isn't doing badly and will definitely sell plenty of more copies during its lifetime...but is it a system seller?

About Resistance, Motorstorm etc.: Of course those were launch titles, but as I mentioned, the Motorstorm sequel is on its way to surpass LBP sales and that has been released a few weeks ago. Let's wait and see if Resistance 2 will do the same

Gears of War 2 is pretty much the epitome of everything gamers in North America want and the sequel to an already very successful product. I can't see anyone expecting a platformer on a smaller install base to be beating it in sales.

GOW has a very specific target audience. This game has a very broad one. Should have been very possible.

Sorry, I meant to argue something about shooters being in much larger quantities because that type of game is more successful, but came across as a sarcastic arse by being one.

It would be if it were the Wii we're talking about.

Owners of 360s and PS3s are typically more slanted towards 'hardcore' titles, clearly. You only have to look at the sales of broadly targeted games like LittleBIGPlanet and Viva Pinata in comparison to more conventional hardcore fare for evidence of this, which is a shame as pretty much anyone could enjoy them if they got over their inhibitions and just tried them.

I've actively watched 'hardcore' gamers in real life look at adverts of LBP and stuff like it and just say "Looks a bit gay", even though they'd probably really like it if they tried it. I think it's a combination of not wanting to step out the box and try something new, and also fitting in with what everyone else is playing. Or something.

I dunno, it weirds me out that some superb games go without many sales — annoys me, even. Far too many examples over the years to name them all, although Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil spring to mind. Even stuff like Mirror's Edge struggles nowadays, and that's not that far out of the norm.

    Fuckin' gamers.

I'd say LBP did pretty well considering. I found it more of a hardcore game than anything else. A pretty tough platformer with an incredible creation component doesn't necessarily ring of casual to me. Though, I guess it depends on whether hardcore means 'gamer who plays anything' and 'guy who mostly just sticks with Call of Duty and Gears'. Though it does sound approachable on paper.

It's well over a million sales now and looks to have pretty long legs, at least more than most games. I'd have expected less from such a peculiar little game, to be honest.

Though I wish I could say the same for the new Banjo. Also a really fun, unique game that was ignored to an even greater extent.

Totally right, which is why I think most hardcore gamers would love it if they played it. However, the way it looks and is marketed clearly gives it a more family-friendly tone (I wouldn't use the word 'casual', perhaps 'accessible but extremely deep'). I think this is the bit where your shooter-loving hardcores throw it into the same bucket as 'kiddie games' and presume it's not for them based on superficialities.

Viva Piñata is another game that has such a look to it, and despite its fairly deep mechanics (arguably too much for children, despite a lot of assumptions about it being for children) lo and behold it sold like shit.

LBP planet will never break into the "mums" buying lists due to the fact they'd have to buy their precious ones a PS3 first, so that's an extra £3-400 first. Nintendo have that area of the market sealed up tighter than a badgers nadsack with the Wii being so cheap and heavily marketed.

Looks like the MGS4 pack will also contain five levels and a weapon, based on the trophies/achievements added in today's patch.

Full info/pictures for the new trophies is at the bottom of the list here:
