Heard about this on the radio today, i lol'd:

    Quote

Sony has postponed the global release of a much-anticipated video game due to concerns that it may offend Muslims.

Copies of LittleBigPlanet are being recalled from shops worldwide after it emerged that a background music track contained two phrases from the Koran.

Sony issued an apology for any offence that its use of the backing track might have caused.

The changed version of LittleBigPlanet will now go on sale on 3 November in the UK and 29 October in the US.

Yea read about this a few days ago. Not surprised that mainstream media is picking it up now. Shame for Sony, especially considering that they had problems with the Church of England last year ("Resistance").

A dumb reason to delay the game in the first place, a dumb thing to put in the game given the situation (this has happened before, for a lame Xbox fighting game a couple years ago!), and all around very very dumb.

They are allowed to make a song with quotes, but when that song is in a game it's bad? I don't get it.

no. it's just that when there's a chance muslims will be offended, you have to calculate the very potential risk. it's sad, but it's true. you haven't forgotten the comic issue, right?

I see what's offensive with creating new and offensive material, but I don't get what's offensive by using material that is already created and "approved".

Ok, LBP might not be the best game to add religious songs, but hey.

i understand your arguments, but i think the radical muslim community will take this to a whole other context (their holy book being used in a sinfull, western game for cheap and unholy entertainment ). really, you dont want to step on this giants toes..

From the BBC article linked in the first post:

    Quote

Manzoor Moghal, of the Muslim Forum think-tank, explained that words from the Koran should not be set to music because the words are seen to have come directly from God.He added: "We must compliment Sony for taking decisive action by withdrawing these games immediately, and releasing a version that is not offensive to Muslims."

So it isn't an issue related exclusively to videogames in the first place.

    Quote from Erratic

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Unfortunately muslims don't speak with a single voice, so you get all kinds of different feedback from such events from the muslim community, depending on how conservative the person is and how he interpretes the Koran.

One less game for a busy release week, I'm slightly happy.
