Pandora Handhelds can be preordered

    So, people familiar with the GP2X stuff might know this already and as a lot of people here seem to be interested in the development of handheld games, I thought it would be cool to let you guys know about it. Soo, OpenPandora is a project started by a bunch of people from the GP2X community quite a while ago, whose aim it is to create a handheld device for developers and homebrewers which runs on 100% open source software, meaning that there are no fees for developers tools or anything and you can modify the software/firmware as you like, but which still has enough hardware power. The project was smiled at in the beginning, however now it's going insofar as they're releasing the first 3000 units which can be preordered by interested developers on their site from tomorrow on... uhm, yeah, that's pretty much it for now. People managed to run several Linux distros on that machine, someone even ran Quake 2 on it and several emulators are in development as well. Pretty cool stuff.

    I got a DS and an R4 on saturday from a friend, I'm in portable nirvana. He included a game called Harvest Moon: Rune Factory and holy shit this has got to be one of the most addicting games I've ever played. Farming AND dungeon crawling? :monocle:

    I will probably order one. Loved my GP2X and this is even a lot better!

    Will wait tho until some software is availble. And like with the GP2X i assume there will be some problems with the hardware of the first units. So i will wait for the next revision.

    I was sceptical, too, when they started their thread in the GP2X community almost two years ago...

    They officially started shipping a couple weeks ago and the first reviews are coming in. I was skeptical at first but it actually looks pretty awesome. Check out the recent related videos too.

    I more or less completely lost interest in this kind of handhelds ever since i bought a NDS. It's just so much better for actual gaming then any open source device where you can only play the same old emulated games over and over again (except you care for all the tons of sub par homebrew games). And for all the other gimmicks that such handhelds provide there are much better devices on the market.

    I've never really understood portable gaming unless you spend a lot of time riding buses/trains, or have to spend a lot of time in airport lobbies. I used to see some guys from ES who would walk around with a DS or PSP plastered to their face constantly. Seems a little too hardcore.

    well i always had the idea in my mind that people would randomly challenge me to tetris ds or some shit, but it turns out that not a lot of people actually have a ds, much less tetris ds...

    It's also great for recreation and relaxation. I often play the DS in my bed before i go to sleep. Other people read a book.
