    What's this about?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7550804.stm

    Another analysis on the conflict:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7550780.stm

Of course saying this localized conflict could lead to a new World War is a bit overreacting but it still is a very serious situation, considering it could also spread to another separatist region within Georgia called Abkhazia. Another potential threat to peace is that the hate generated by this conflict could fuel paramilitary and terrorist groups and situations like the russian school invasion could happen again.

it would have been ww3 if georgia would have been given acces to the nato. now its just tragic, with russia being the big bully they are and the rest of the world too chicken to do anything about it.

Wasn't it pretty much Georgia that triggered this, though?

thats not clear afaik. georgia accuses russia of attacking first and russia claims they were only defending from the attacks from georgia's side. either way, georgia declared state of war if thats what you mean?

also: if one side is to provit from this, its russia. i dont see any reason for georgia to attack russia so id reckon if one of the two sides is lying, its russia.

hah, i wish. there is no incentive for the US to interfere here. if anyone was to enter this conflict for any reason at all, it'd be NATO (exluding the us), possibly forced by the UN as peacekeeping forces.

This is about the area Ossetia, which is an independent state, which is russian supportet and protected. Georgia doesn't like Ossetia and they probably want their land back, but Ossetia wants to go under russian rule.

TBH I think that Georgia started it to show the world (NATO), that they don't take crap from the russians, but the ruskies was pushing their boundary's when their planes got shot.

I am glad that Georgia isn't a part of NATO.

ossetia is part of georgia. they are a more or less autonom province but they don't belong to russia nor are they independent (at least until yesterday!)

they aren't recognized by anyone, that's true. but, afaik. their passports are Russian, since the Russian government wants to take them under their wing.

Nothing more than a bit of Soviet policing of ex-territory. The British did this for many years and still do on occasion.

The death toll just keeps on growing, with reports of 1600–2000 now — mostly civilians. I guess that old (Russian!) quote about many deaths being a statistic stands true, as most people won't hear about anything specific about the individuals whose futures, dreams, and families have been extinguished by this silly conflict. Kind of like Iraq to an extent.

What a time to do it, too. Just like the rest of us, many of the people killed thus far would have been wanting to sit down and enjoy the Olympics this week.

You still can, don't let the media play with your mind. Bad shit happens every day, I finally realised how much more enjoyable my life would be if I don't read the news, it's a shame most people have a craving for evil stories and feel that by attempting to understand them somehow it's helping (if not, whats the point at all?)

I'd rather spend my time learning about all the good things people do everyday such as the Olympics.

If the media didn't report on it, people would be up in arms about its neglect. When they do, they accuse them of being fear mongers. It seems people often have two minds about this subject I can never quite figure out.

Personally, I want to know about all the horrible things that occur, if only for the sake of just knowing about it. May sound morbid, but it's certainly better than the alternative.

I can only hope such events take precedence over pointless shit like the Olympics.
