I think with Valve you don't have to be too afraid of it ending up being a shit hole

lol, indeed... it's like, Valve Is Valve!

Most of us would give out a kidney, or two, to work there!

At least with their release dates for most of their games being unknown you know you have some level of job security... I mean hell robin walker was working on TF2 for like 10+ years.

Problem with companies like Valve and also Epic and iD is that you might get overexited and expect them to do everything super perfect, and then end up disappointed when reality slaps you in the face. I think thats what Hessi is saying.

The thing is, theres something wrong in any company. Starting out smaller is not neccy the way to not get frustrated. Plenty of small studios also completely mess it up, usually because of inexperience. It is worse when it happens to a small studio than to a studio like Valve, as the studio might go bankrupt fairly quickly...adding to your stress.

thanks for clearing things out hourences. you exactly captured my point. of course small studios might fail even quicker and harder, but that's what i would usually expect to happen at some time.

At least you can be safe in the knowledge that Valve really like your work even though you didn't get the job. I know I would be pretty happy about that.

Skdr are you going to apply at other companys now? As cool as Valve is i wouldn't stick all my hopes with them and wasting time on more custom maps.

You got interviewed on the other side of the world. That is something. Getting a job in europe should be easy for you in comparison.

In the end industry experience and AAA titles on your list weight more then custom maps. And maybe (or certainly) these things would have made the difference for you in the valve interview. Be smart and start your carreer now on a place that is not called valve.

You know, I never said I don't want to work in any other companies. And the thing is, I never sent my portfolio or CV to Valve.

I've been trying to be in contact with many European companies (few from Sweden, GRIN anyone?) but never got a word back from them. So I'm definitely looking for work.

You just need a small break and you'll be on your way. Valve don't fly just anybody half way around the world Anyway, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the job, but it sounds like you had a really great experience regardless.

Have you tried the studios in finland?

    Remedy/Recoil games/Frostbyte etc.

Recoil is actively looking for a level designer right now: http://www.hourences.com/book/jobsindex.php#100

That ad is less than a week old.

My record stands at 1.5 years to just get a reply to my application email. They then did invite me over though, but I didn't go. Screw you if you need 1.5 years to reply:)
