Diablo 3

    Diablo 3 speculation has perked up again with Blizzard's splash image teaser. It started with one rune symbol in a mass of ice, and every day they're adding a bit to it. Right now there are 3 runes and the ice is beginning to break.

    Fan sites have of course performed the obligatory in-depth analysis of the symbols, yielding some positive evidence. The first one was thought to be from WoW, on the Frostmourne sword to be exact. This may still be, but other sites note that it shares just as many similarites with a Shael rune from Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. The second one is virtually identical to LOD's Hel rune.

    I'm not sure about the third one, someone said it looked like phobos from Starcraft. In that case the image could be showing a rune from every Blizzard series (WoW, Diablo, Starcraft.)

    Still, Blizzard's WWI in Paris will run day and date with Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction's release dates. Here's (insurmountably) hoping they finally pull the curtain on it.

    It's an unsettling possibilty that I fear too. One of the largest pieces of evidence for Diablo 3 is Blizzard's cryptic "Team 3" job listings, and their project is called a "next-gen mmo."

    They'd actually gain business, by attracting some WoW players (there's plenty of them who look at WoW as a surrogate Diablo 3) and we die-hards alike.

    But... only if they do the even more unthinkable..... subscription fees.

    Oh dear.

    I think the MMO approach would take away from what Diablo is: a warp speed loot fest. Slogging around with a few hundred other players (with shitty latency) doesn't seem to quite fit what I always saw Diablo as. I'm very much a loner when it comes to RPG's and could care less if there were other players in the world with me, so I may be in the minority on this.

    Are you sure that Project 3 and their Next-gen MMO is the same project? It was my impression that Project 3 has been well underway now for quite some time while the Next-gen MMO is still on a prototype level.

    You may be right. I'm just drawing from my memory of visiting Blizzard's site and noticing the job listings off to the side.

    I could swear it said something like "team 3 is hiring level designers for next-gen mmo."

    I'd love to be wrong.

    EDIT: Also, this comparison shot of the current Blizzard splash image (with eyes now. Yikes.) and Diablo 2's boxart. Makes me feel warm and gooey.

    Nope me too. I played through the majority of GuildWars (twice) using the AI companions.

    http://www.diabloii.net seem to be pretty convinced its going to be a D3 announcement, and reading around the subject I would be inclined to think they are right.

    It's def a game announcement, a Blizz VP and the writer of the Diablo series of books has hinted towards it, the hirings mentioned above have specifically cited Diablo 1 & 2 and just this month Blizzard acquired the http://www.diablo3.com domain from one of their largest fan sites (hit the site for background info about it).

    Man I am excited. Pindleskin runs ftw.

    It ain't StarCraft. They've already announced it, there'd be no point in a teaser. And look closely at that splash image. The vapor around the eyes is a dead ringer for the hood on the Diablo 2 box.
