Looks like he did a similar style degree to what I'm just finishing off and looks like his was a waste of time. Most of ours wasnt 3D work in XSI yet my portfolio of stuff is wildly different (possibly better...)

After three years doing this degree and learning XSI from scratch I think I could actually make his portfolio in a day, two max.

I think he's just another kid who idealizes this industry too much. We all know it's not heaven but it's not hell either, a lame degree in game design will get you nowhere. He should do like I do and get a degree in a field which is going to help him become an specialist, instead of a generalist. I want to be an artist so I'm porsuing a degree in Design (both graphics and product). If he wanted to be a coder he should get a degree in computer sciences/engineering, and so on. I think most "game design" courses are just a waste of time, since they only teach you how to use softwares and that you can do reading free tutorials on the interwebs.

i agree. maybe there's alot of bashing here (i credit that to the elitism of these fora), but it is exactly what peris said. the problem is these days that even though some people like games, the artistic side of games, or anything else for that matter, is not always easy to have talent for. it seems he has followed his course, but not having done anything besides that; no free time spent on modeling, no motivation or anything else. this is why i do not give him more credit; a course and a degree in such direction gives only so much.

there's a saying about whenever a great artist creates a piece of work, he puts a piece of his soul in it; and while having a soul might be a debatable question, you can clearly see when there's something special about such pieces of work. a good example of this would be some of the many entries in the WIP level design or modeling fora.

I call it the "bum" of the work Some models look awesome even when they are just started and as simple as 3 triangles and some look crap. It's hard to tell why is it happening so and its not only matter of presentation, you just feel it .

His portfolio is horrible, and everything else said is prolly true, but he does has a point that the industry doesnt always make it easy for starters. If you have a title on your name, youre hired so much easier, even if that title is utterly horrible... its not always fair.

I also believe that hes a victim of one those game dev schools, and thats also part of the problem. The whole thing is muched too hyped up and a lot of those schools are really really bad. Dont blame it all on the guy.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with flash galleries! I mean, there are some flash galleries that are everything but "browsable", they are confusing, not intuitive, etc! But if the layout is well implemented and easy to browse, theres nothing wrong with that... (I think :-|)

I agree. You clearly implied that any kind of Flash gallery is bad with your post Psycho. IMO they're no different to regular websites in that if they're intuitive, accessible, and load quickly, they're fine. I see no reason to draw a distinction between HTML and Flash when it comes to stuff like portfolios.

If you'd just said "lol. annoying site to use." then that'd be fine — I'd agree with that.

TBH, Game Industry is the easiest industry to get into, to get a good job in good company, you have the mod scene tutorials... all you need to have is some art/code/whatever talent and you're good to go. It's pretty obvious that you need to have something good on your back to get a job, game industry is like that and so does all other

I agree with Buddy at some point, but It's not as obvious for other people as it is for us. Although, I would'nt exagerate, and say It's the easiest industry to get into, completly on the contrary, it's not easy at all, imho, you just need talent and a lot of effort!

I tottally recomend the latest Hourences book to everyone, that's the one and only school one needs to get started.

It's just that some people seem to have this assumption that because a site is made using Flash it is better then a normal HTML page. That's the sort of feeling I get with his portfolio.

His focus was art and he clearly doesn't have an eye for creating good art. He obviously has no one in his life that's telling him that he needs to get better before he puts stuff like that up on his website which is kind of sad considering that is the very *least* I would expect from people at a university setting. If I had 5 people I respected tell me one of my level screenshots was bad, I'd definitely be taking it down or asking how to improve on it if I had to keep it up.

Aw man, if you guys remember those infamous commercials for game design schools, I think all of them were from right here in Arizona. Shame he moved halfway across the country just to get false hopes. But I think it shows some passion and initiative.

    For clarification:

This article is not a lamentation, nor is it meant to place blame on anyone for my personal shortcomings. There are probably many reasons why I failed to get even so much as a phone interview. My problems are my own, and I am pursuing other ways to pay the bills.

I will admit, openly and publicly, that I probably don't have a very competitive portfolio.

I can't make a damned thing in a 3D Modeling program. He's got more talent than me, and his stuff's about as detailed as any game on Wii or 360. I say lighten up.
