Please tell me that portfolio is a joke...

I would actually break down into tears if that site is not a joke.

The portfolio is certainly a joke. If the story is real that guy has been plundered and his degree is as worth as toilet paper.

Only skimmed, but to his credit, he never said he had an amazing portfolio. You guys just jumped on and started talking shit probably without reading anything. To the other side's credit, there are a few places that give people in his position a chance to get going as interns of contractors (Gearbox), but still you've got to meet a certain bar of quality.

Yeah I think he was pretty honest about the the lack of quality in his work.

Thing is: if he's so passionate as he says why does his portfolio suck so much? I think he is just a lazy little cry baby who blames others for his lack of everything. Even with no talent at all it should be possible to do better stuff after so many months or even years. The internet is full of helpfull ressources and tutorials. You can buy very good tutorial DVD's etc. It's not a big mystery or secret how to improve skills. It's only about you getting your shit together and moving your ass.

I suspect he's like many university graduates and expects to have his hand held for him into a job, and for the degree to stand for everything by itself. That may work for some professions (get degree, automatic £££ and job), but the creative ones generally aren't one of them. I've watched a number of people I know go down a similar route of frustration, coming out of long courses but not being that much better than when they went in.

His point is fair about how work should be done to train those who aren't traditionally obsessed with games to make them, but I think it's also wrong. How many people working in Hollywood and whatnot do you think aren't familiar with films? And how many web designers do you think there are who haven't always enjoyed using exciting/innovative sites? What about musicians who don't love music? Not many, I wager.

Whether he likes it or not, a critical component of creative jobs is that you put a lot of your own time and passion into making sure you're pushing the envelope of quality forward — your portfolio does have to be powerful. Mapcorians have often made stuff that looks better than industry stuff before they even got a job, rather than desperately trying to hit the bare minimum of quality required to get the job like this guy seems to want.

I think he's more tragically naive than contemptible, though. He just doesn't understand the way creativity works: it's not taught — it's cultured.
