So you buy a game to watch cinematics... and not like, play the game? Get a movie instead? :s

It's the combination of the cinematics and gameplay that makes MGS so enjoyable for fans; it delivers a story experience much more involving than most games, but is still fantastic fun. Also, the thick storytelling gives some real meaning to what you're doing. They are two mutually integral pieces of the overall experience.

MGS has always been innovative and done new things gameplay-wise with each instalment, so there's no weight to any argument attacking its gameplay quality. Indeed, it's ideas from Metal Gear that've been the basis for countless other games, including the obvious Splinter Cell.

MGS has always been an unforgivingly hard game and the cutscenes are a really nice incentive to actually get through the puzzles, long stealth sections, etc. And with the difficulty of some parts, you need a break to just sit back. If you can't understand this and haven't actually played the games, why criticise people for liking it?

hey guys, dunno if you saw them already, but i guess it's a good idea to post about this.

    http://kotaku.com/5010966/metal-gear-so ... o-fake-ads

it's some video ads to MGS4, only the serious MGS fans understand the essence of this ads, otherwise it's just some random CG ad for anyone else who watches it! Now that's what i call being genius and risky.

    ------------------

A quick summary of the game plus some excerpts:

    - Very bleak, somber game, not just by MGS standards.

    - The character Snake has never felt so believable. The briefing scenes show how frail he really is.

    - Controls are incredibly refined and allow for much more options during the combat sequences.

More about how free and open the gameplay is:

    Quote

”When I’m about to enter a huge fortress, I can choose to sneak through the trenches, up the stairs and coordinate my crawling motions with the guards’ patrol routes. Or pick guards off from a distance with my sniper rifle. Or utilize the smoother control set to get Snake to climb up on scaffoldings, across walls and roll through hallways to quickly get ahead without getting spotted from a distance.During the larger battles, I can accompany the guerrilla troops who are fighting the PMC armies and take out my bazooka in order to silence helis and armoured vehicles that otherwise rain down lethal machine gun fire. Or I can look around, sneak away from the battle and utilize the tiny robot Mk II to eliminate the lone soldiers who guard the route that leads past the battle. And even within these different manners of approach there are a great number of options. There are hiding places and possible routes everywhere.”

    Quote

”MGS4 constantly changes character. While previous parts in the MGS series have had good pacing and a large variation, Guns of the Patriots almost feels like several separate games. The different locations that Solid Snake visits are radically different from each other, both visually and in terms of how they force you to play. There are large, open areas with it’s a challenge just finding the right way. There are also completely linear sections. Enemies vary from human soldiers who make rational decisions to the occasional but very powerful mechs and tiny little robots who throw themselves over Snake. Some parts are all about pure action in the vein of Lost Planet or Gears of War. Other times it’s a fatal error to equip yourself with anything other than silenced pistols. There are suspenseful chase sequences and mech battles. In one moment Snake is forced to use his eyes to look for signs in the nature in order to follow a person. In the next he’s forced to listen for sounds to be able to maneuver properly. Sequences where he travels alone in claustrophobic tunnels are followed by enormous battles where troops face off against each other, helis are thundering in above the ground and APCs head in between the trees.

The game constantly showers the player with new impressions, new challenges, and the end result is never anything else than fantastic.”

    - Amazing graphics and sound…

    Some small nigglings:

    - Some of the bosses are a bit too easy.

    - The game can be a tad confusing a times. One section took more attempts than wanted.

    - Some skirmishes suffer from what seems like enemies spawning in.

    - Some plot twists feel a bit silly.

    - Notes that these details are still minute stuff that only “stand out” in a game like this.

A lot of fantastic games have come out in the past years, but none that has seriously given me that feeling that I’ve discovered something completely new, the way Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life or Zelda: OoT did when I played them for the first time.

    …

But Metal Gear Solid 4 takes me back to that stage where everything feels new. Hideo Kojima not only surpasses the ten-year old predecessor – he once again manages to conjure up emotional storms within me that I actually didn’t know existed.

It’s not about one single revolutionary aspect. It’s about that MGS4 is so beautiful, so perfect and that it dares to get so close. When the credits roll, it feels like it’s just now that I’ve understood what games are all about.”

Uh, semi slight spoiler, but what the fuck is up with the start of the game?!

    Live action cyber cooking show?!

Obviously it must be on purpose, but what a crappy way to start a game (Unless its explained later on ). Was good once it started tho, many cutscenes . Only played it for about 40m tho :G

Been playing it the entire evening, good stuff, really dig the new controls. Playing the game on Normal (Not Naked Normal or whatever that other one is called), it is extremely easy to play it like a shooter this time around, even though Otacon tells you its a stealth mission then I found myself just shooting dudes most of the time since it was so much fun .

Lots of Apple product placement as well

Finished it earlier today, good stuff.

The plot does end up getting fairly confusing towards the end (much like with MGS2), and I definitely feel a need to play it again just to get everything right. The first half of the game is by far the best in my opinion, where as the second feels just a bit too focused on the story and the gameplay suffers as a result. Which is a shame because it almost feels like a completely different game in that department this time around. It actually feels good to play it like a shooter and as a stealth game. I found myself switching throughout the game and both methods always worked great. Ending was pretty good, tons of fake endings too, obviously

    .

Its not a 10/10 though, IGN and Gamespot must be on crack. More like a 9'ish

Well, a game like this always have a special touch on fan's heart's! I dunno if you have been following the MGS saga all this years, but for those who did, this one is the most important of them all! hence the good amount of 10/10's out there, because most of the people who are reviewing it, were already fans of the saga.

For fans, playing this final MGS, is like having multiple gamer orgasm in a row!

I've been playing all the proper games since the first MGS, and I'd consider myself a fan. However in terms of story I think MGS2 and 3 hit me harder than 4 did, where as gameplay wise it is a huge improvement over the old games. Regardless then this is another conversation, I just find myself questioning IGN and Gamespot reviews value to me, if this is what they define as the very top of the scale.

Its a good game that needs to played, thats all that matters

Haha, on the Kotaku comments for that video, you can easily tell which people are MGS fan-boys and which aren't.

Here's an example of the said MGS fanboy:

"I didn't laugh once. Didn't even crack a smile. Metal Gear Solid is in a league of its own and this game does not deserve to be joking about MGS."

Personally though, I loved the video!
