woot since I'll be doing more concept art I decided to start my own thread (peris is not the only one anymore!)

This is my first "serious" painting, using my tablet. It's a random vault opening its door, a vertibird and an enclave soldier wannabe ready to open fire against the vault dwellers. Anyone who played Fallout 2 will instantly recognize the scene

It has a lot of mistakes so I'm ready to take hard criticism, go ahead, spit it out, I can take it

I consider this very wip, I still have to work on the door, and improve the composition. I thought of adding some tribals spying on the enclave soldiers in the bottom right corner. Ideas are welcome. Some areas are still very rough as well.

(ps: I'm aware the vault door doesn't look anything like the one in Fallout, I was too lazy and went for a simple looking one)

reminds me alot of the koko style, i like it. i honestly dont give much critique since, well, it's art. at any point you could go and say "yeah i meant to do that".

if i had to say something though, the veiny look on the rocks in some places looks weird and out of place and the area behind the man and flying thing is way too dark, considering how light the rest of the cave is. also the rotors of the flying thing look like they're floppy/flaccid ;p

ooh cool start mino =)some tips:

-theres a big seperation between the brush sizes you use, i see small skratches and big brushes. Try to keep a similar level of detail in your painting and only go more detailed in areas of focus.

-try creating more depht using fog or different values/colors. Its hard to get a sense of perspective out of this painting because the values are tehsame everywhere

-try using some hard edged brushes instead of soft edge ones, youll get a better feeling of detail and completeness =)

    Good tips

Sentura: I disagree that it looks like kokos style D: As for the vertibird rotors, yeah, I agree that they look pretty sloppy.

Keep it up with the crits guys, I'll only be able to work on this in the next weekend.

much better now, more depth and more smoothness. i still think you should smoothen the hard light on the walls... but that's about it. how long did it take you to make this, total?

    Thanks Sentura.

Yeah I actually agree with you about the thin hard edges, I'll get rid of those. It didn't take much, 2 hours and a half on sunday and another half hour yesterday. It's still not finished yet, I wanna finish some stuff first then move on to something else (been thinking of painting something featuring the almighty indiana jones )

looks good, although the contour on the foreground is too sharp. how quick is quick?

Yeah I screwed up the foreground but I only noticed that when the painting was done (I was working on a 16% zoom).

The entire scene took about 2 hours. I'm slow

I used a hard round brush mainly + some weird brushes I created. The clouds brush was created using one of Windows XP's stock wallpapers lol (the one with a tiny island).

    I agree with this

nice stuff minos! I like those clouds in that environment a lot. The 'middle ground' coulda been a bit better, little bit scribbly now. I need to be better at that too actually

I made a nice crane brush and decided to give it a go in this sucker

    [Blocked Image: http://thiagoklafke.com/misc/sketches/quick_environment2.jpg]

The brush is pretty cool since it follows the direction of your brush strokes. You can make all kinds of cranes, curved, angled, you name it =)

Two quickies (15 mins on the first - 30 on the second). The first one is very boring but I'm posting it here to track my progress anyway. The second one was actually meant for a daily speed painting thread in cgtalk (the theme was "red") but I got a little carried away and spent extra 20 minutes on it.

and a bic pen drawing. I'm thinking of working more on this idea:

pretty cool man, the perspective on the crosswalk is a little too angled down (towards the foreground y'know?) There probably could be more contrast too but I dig it man.
