3D skybox mate I think halflife 2 has some if you need to work out the best method. Every map needs a visual hook. Such a vista will also help orientate the player (if you have the cliff along one side then the player knows where they are as soon as they see it.

you need -final for decent lighting/shadows. if it does 2 lighting passes you have the correct setting (takes a while even on simpler maps)

I would recommend doing a -final compile every so often because it can radically change the lighting on your map - it adds reflections to white walls etc

to fix this issue you just need to have one enitity cubemap in your level. it doesn't add any reflections until you type 'buildcubemaps' in the console.

if you don't have a cubemap in your level it uses a default cubemap for all models- making this nasty effect.

The optimisation guides to follow. I personally suggest that you learn how to optimise using a simple level (aim map or something like that) before you start your competition entry. A couple of hours learning before you start will help you map with optimisation in mind, and stop MASSIVE headaches later on.
