2 hours ago, Vilham said: To be fair the organisation of the assets in UT4 is a bit of a mess. There clearly aren't any consistent standards.

I was actually very disappointed when I found that out. It's pretty hard for a newcomer.

By the way, can someone tell me what "RK" means? There are some Materials and Meshes inside such folders.

Oh that's great! I also was thinking about making a map based on Hallstatt a while ago. Looks very promising so far! Good job!

I have a question. What is the best way to make the step from a BSP shell to a meshed out Level? I feel like I am missing something. When looking at existing maps, Epic does not use any BSP. Did they convert the BSP to a mesh and worked from there? If so, how can i make sure Subtractive BSP blocks are taken into account properly? I always get very weird results were some subtractive blocks were actually carved, but most were not. And what's the deal with blocking volumes? Are they hand crafted and basically block out the entire level anew?

Please shed some light on this for me.

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry if this question has been asked before (I only checked the FAQ regarding this) - As an unexperienced UT player/developer I doubt that I can create a SOLID design during the first phase. Is it allowed to submit the first design iteration by May 2nd and change parts of it during phase #2?

There is a talk by Jim Brown (Epic Games) where he also talks about interpreting heatmaps if I remember correctly: http://gdcvault.com/play/1020844/T…of-Everything-A

While this is mostly about analyzing data in general, this is VERY helpful! This is kind of talks is what I was looking for. Thank you alot!

    Hey everybody!

Sorry in advance, if this is the wrong subforum. Couldn't find any fitting one for that topic, but since it is about 3D Level Design it might be okay here.

I was wondering what the process of analyzing heatmaps for 3D Levels looks like. What design information can I pull out of it and how can I read heatmaps? Furthermore, can anyone recommend any lecture or tutorial videos regarding that topic?

    Thanks in advance!

Church, detail is pretty unbalanced, working on some sketches to fill the top of the bell tower and the trim areas around the roof. Bandstand went through a couple revisions before going to this form

I feel like the height of the clock tower is in weird proportion to it's width. I'd suggest to make it higher or thinner. Other than that, the progress looks very promising so far!

Possibly not EXACTLY what you are looking for, but I found the book "An Architectural Approach to Level Design" by Christopher W. Totten a phenomenal lecture since it tells a lot about architectual and spatial principles applicable to level design. Have a look at it! Highly recommended!

with 2000h spent on the editor, i don't really think there is necessity to hire someone to do these tasks. radar and overview graphics are explained to be made in several tutorials and the techniques aren't that advanced. read into it and see how easy it actually is. don't spend money or something else on it.

The map looks really cool! In my opinion you should also use some variation in texture and/or architecture. If everything looks the same the player gets easily confused. But I must say, it looks really promising so far!
