I'm still plating Battlefield 3 o_o. I just adore playing hide and seek with tanks. The funniest thing evah. "Oh you see me... Oh now you don't... Ohh shiet ruuun". I lasted about 12 seconds running around a tank once. The guy decided to come out... I shot him and took his tank... mlol. All the things you can do in this game *sigh happily*. I'm still terrible at flying anything haha. First time I flew a Jet I ran it into the ground upside down haha.

    Mhaiii !

I didn't exactly know where to post this but hey, feel free to move this post around. I haven't had the chance to introduce myself at all. I just plunged into the portfolio section and started giving feedback right away. Sooo... my name is Antoine Ladouceur and I'm a level designer (hi, hi nice to meet you all *shake hands*). I'm from the Montreal !

On an irregular basis I do some kind of level design/environment design analysis of games that I play. I decided to do a contiunous series on the first Bioshock, but sometimes I'll analyze sections of a game that I find interesting and well built. I just have so much fun writing these I thought I shared'em with ya . Maybe in teh future we can have conversations about parts of a game that we think are particularly clever and fun. We could all jump in and start stripping games away to find the core design and such. AH so much excitement... Very Passion. I really love what I do (level design) and so excited to be joining this community.

So here's the little portion of my website that I wanted to share with you all: http://antoineladouceurld.weebly.com/level-analysis-new-april-11.html

Currently in a Starboocks... with the lappy... caffeinated haha and making layouts in Illustrator.

    Hey Jabb !

Maybe just a few insights on the flow of your website. When browsing through other people's work I always prefer landing first on a page that shows content. I also wouldn't put the "contact tab" in the middle of the menu bar. It's quite standard to have it as the last tab. Talking about the contact tab, I personally wouldn't put my Skype contact in there (keeps away the creeps). I always find it more professional to have an email and a link towards a LinkedIn page (if you don't have one you should. It's a great online "business card"). What I like to see from concept artist is how they convert what they are told into actual concrete work (for example: "I was asked to provide concept for a character X. This was what was requested (you list the stuff) and this is what I did). You don't need to write big paragraphs about what precisely was asked of you, just some bullet points to give me an idea of how you translated a request into concrete work. I would also go for a different color on your description text under your name. Instead of grey continue with white ?

    Hope this helps

    Hey there !

Super amazing assets there. Impressive modeling skills. I do have a few suggestions for you. When I enter a portfolio page I always look at the person's title and here I'm seeing Environment Art..ist AND Level Design...er which are two different things with two completely different skill sets (though they do sometimes touch some common grounds). Later, in your "About Me" section, you talk about being a "fresh graduate game design student" but you did a Bachelor of Arts? Game Design is yet another thing that requires a particular skill set. In that regard I think your portfolio page could be a little more focused. I would personally think of stripping out level design from your title since the focus of your portfolio isn't on showcasing gameplay moments you've created but rather content like assets and environments. I would also rewrite the about me section by taking out "game design student" and by saying that you have a bachelor in arts so we know that you are the freaking boss at what you're doing haha. Did you ever thought about why you wanted to join the game industry? That would be a cool thing to add in your about me section. I know people take like 5 seconds to look over portfolios, but if someone actually reads your about me section maybe they're going to be like... "hey... the reasons he gave for wanting to work in the game industry is pretty damn cool". A few things about your images. Your contact info on them is tiny. If the image ends somewhere else than your portfolio page you want other people to notice who made that thing. So I would make your contact info a bit bigger. I would also include some wireframes of your stuff, just so we know how tight and optimized your models can be (while still looking gorgeous because they are). It just shows how you think about making your art. Another thing is I think it would be cool if all the stuff you showed was textured. It just looks more finished and polished. As you define yourself as an "environment artist" I'd like to see more than guns and vehicles maybe put your guns and vehicles in a completely finished environment that you modeled as well just so we don't have a feeling that you're a "Prop Artist" rather than an "Environment Artist". Another thing that I find quite cool is when an artist is like... "hey... I liked that environment in that game. I should do some kind of homage to it and remodel the entire thing but... better *challenge accepted vibe*". Just an idea I'm throwing out there.

Geez everytime I give feedback on there I post huge block of texts. Hope I didn't scare you haha. I truly truly hope you find yourself a job .

    Hey there Nick !

Totally agree with what Warby said. Basically, with zero click I should be able to see concrete work (zero click = first page I see when the site loads). Also... just be sure to correct any easy spelling errors like "couter strike" (on the home page). In the mods section, I wanted to have a close look at your "contributions" but couldn't. The images are very small and there's no link to enlarge them. Usually you want to keep your audience (whoever that is... HR... other devs looking for possible employees) on your web page as much as possible. Couple of clicks in and I'm browsing through a lot of different websites... Game Banana... Moddb. The first thing I thought when clicking the banners was... "okay let's look at his explanations of his design decisions and map layout... oh what's this... a very colorful website... oh... not what I expected" and then I went back and didn't really looked at what was on that page. If you're looking for a job... just tell yourself people on the other end have very little time to look over stuff and get annoyed very quickly when they expect something and don't get it. The snappiest you are the better.

Hope that helps (shish I wrote a freaking book o_o).

Just as an addendum: Scripting is generally cool, but looking at flowcharts isn't interesting for neither HR nor designers. It's much better to show the intended purpose of the scripting than just showing the scripting - it's a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Yep ! I totally second that.

    Hi thur Louie !

I think what's missing in your portfolio is a breakdown section where you explain your design process. As a level designer I enjoy to see how people think their own design through. It's cool to have a bunch of pictures of your level, but that tells me little about what's going inside your head while laying out your map. And... don't forget scripting. If you're aiming at a LD position. Show us your logic skills. That's often what separates as "aspiring" level designer to a "closer to something professional" level designer (sort of... if you get what I mean haha). Because I'm a bit nitpicky... I would strip out the portion where you say "I'm an aspiring level designer". No... you are a level designer. Another thing, as soon as I enter your page I don't see any qualifier of who you are Louie Turner / Designer or Louie Turner / Level Designer. This would inform the reader of what your portfolio site is about.

    Hope that helps .
