Hey heyyy. What's up. Been working hard and thought I'd show a little side project. Got to play a little around with Mental Ray in Maya. Can't say I'm a big fan of non real time rendering techniques but it does have some cool bells and whistles. That's kind of an improvisation on a model and concept made by Nick "Panick" who is... incredible. I've been drooling over his work and thought I might study it to get some hands on at doing hard surface type modeling. So yep... wish I could join the Whiteboxing challenge... but so much work... I can't.

    This-is-awesome.

It's kind of striking to hear developers speak up. Makes me wonder... how cool would it be to have a game developer talk show... Mapcore TV... *thinks* with some kind of Late Night Show style. That'll put a face on the games that are being developed.

Action/Thriller mostly. He's into the Godfather, Band of Brothers, James Bond, The Bourne Identity, Ocean's Eleven, Deadwood. That sorta stuff, can't really think of stuff that's comparable in the gaming realm cos mostly they don't have a narrative that's as suspenseful or strong. Perhaps a heist game like Monaco might be up his alley, I'll ask.

Hum... Godfather... maybe some of the Mafia games (Mafia 2 for example) orrr... L.A Noire ?

Epic is making some moves "Europe wise". Interesting... I'm guessing it's part of a big push to attract European developers ? Is Unreal Engine pretty popular across Europe ?

Thinking a bit about the aesthetics of your site... It would be nice to have your name and your job title in a bigger font (it's just common that the title is bigger than the "sub titles"). Talking about subtitles, your job title could be a little more descriptive of what you exactly do. I'm not dumb I'll look at your stuff and say... oh he's a prop artist (freelance), but I'd like to know how you qualify yourself. Also, I feel like the overall color of your website doesn't make your art "pop out" (a bit like Kikette said above). Lots of your objects use very desaturated colors and it kind of all blends in with the background of the page. Maybe try to go with a lighter background to contrast with your pieces ? I always like to think that the page somebody creates will reflect a bit their personality. Maybe try to personalize it a bit more thinking about "what kind of professional I am and how can I communicate that through my page".

I feel like your Black Talons Interior could be lit in a more interesting fashion to better show your specular highlights.

I think you could also present your post apocalyptic assets in a better way using lights and a little setting (some stand in walls... that kind of thing).

    Hope that helps .

    Anyway, sweet ref images~

I cant wait until some big company does a April fools joke where they take a bunch of real life scenes and put stuff that makes it look like a video game would have then claim its a next gen game engine. So when I see stuff like this it makes me smile. I can't tell if this a photograph or not atm LOL

Hahah good call. Just false leak a photo to IGN mentionning it's made in UE4 and... voilà ?

There's one trick that really works well with me. I just eat normally but really slowly. I masticate every fucking little bit of food until it's like a paste. Down the road it's a lot easier for ya body to digest it. The saliva in your mouth helps to digest sugars and fat... stuff like that. The next thing is that the minute I feel like I'm not hungry anymore I just stop eating. At that moment I know that my body is telling me "okay... dude I'm replenished don't need more". If you eat faster you'll just miss this message and probably eat over what you really need. I started loosing weight doing almost nothing because of that.

I've lost over half a stone from just over 13 stone and gone down a jean size since starting. My goal is around 11 and a half stone but I'd be happy under 12. I think the diet during work hours has made the biggest impact, it's so hard to keep the will power but it'll pay off.

Haha I had to google "stone as weight system". That's some antiquity stuff right there. Measuring system prohibited in 1985.

A while back Crytek announced it was moving towards F2P but still sneaked AAA titles out which I guess was weird.

I don't think Warface is doing as well as expected, but it still shouldn't mean an end for Crytek. The next Homefront looks great. Hopefully they can recover if they are in fact in a slump.

Yeah the next homefront looks purty impressive. I'll be getting it fo sure. Hearing that (Crytek stuff) I'm feeling like we're in some sort of "transition period". Like everything feels a bit up in the air and I'm anticipating something... Maybe the feeling comes from how the industry is evolving so freaking fast ? Hearing about Crytek not going so well makes me feel all weird and shit.

Been doing quite a few readings about the IGDA and the different advantages related to a subscription. Seems okay, but is it a must ? As a game dev... should I be joining one of those things ? Is it absolutely important or is it simply for those who want to be apart of this organization ?

Quite curious to see the answers.

I can see them having tough design meetings concerning : how to appeal to mass audience versus pleasing hardcore fans. It's why I think the game tends to feel inconsistent and awkward at certain moments. The super bombastic "everything is exploding and in flames" felt a little strange. It could've been cool but maybe not in the context of this game (it felt like cue moment to appeal to a certain demographic...).

Though I have huge respect for the devs. 5-6 years on a tough to develop project must've been pretty hard on the moral if you've been there from the beginning.

I just got the game on Steam at something like 15 bucks. I'm sorry guys, but even then it's not worth my time. I know you guys worked really hard to ship this, and I am more than well aware of the rocky dev history on the title, 6 years in the making. It would have passed as an ok game with a few good ideas back before Deus Ex and Dishonored, but this feels like an alpha build. Everywhere I look, there's the start of a good idea that never got pushed further, and was just left at a "look, I can do it too" level. So much potential with that franchise too, if only....

    How to fix it:

    - Revamp stealing mechanic to actually make it meaningful (consequence for each item stolen, actual economy to each item)

    - Remap controls and allow throwing of items/shooting while peeking

    - Scrap Splinter Cell like shadow/light stealth mechanic, implement actual visibility cones a la Dishonored

    - Huge task, turn it open world. The best recipe to be found for a new Thief game is on an Assassin's Creed 2 scale (not more)

    Display More

Totally agree with your first point. But I may have to disagree with your third point. It's just THE staple of the Thief franchise (it's not really a Splinter Cell mechanic in the first place). I like sneaking around from shadow to shadow. There's feels attached to that for sure.

I was thinking about open-world, but all the game needed is a more "hub-like level system" in each missions (ya know in my opinion). Linear progression isn't something that I feel fits very well the Thief universe.

So, it's been 3 weeks. I'm at 102,3 kilo now. So that's 4,1 kilo's lost. Haven't really worked out this week (it's been crazy, almost no sleep at all) and it probably won't happen next week as well. Still, I'm on track. Avoiding junk food and soda is becoming easier. The downside is that my old smoking addiction is really catching up with me. I managed to avoid it thus far but strangely enough, that's the hardest part right now.

No ! NO ! Don't let this creep onto you man. Did you just try to ignore it before or you had like... a plan of action ? Some kind of trick when you felt like smoking ?
