Spellsworn - Devblog Post #3 is live!
The amount of blogposts we have now are almost longer than we can count (4). These last two weeks have been extremely eventful, we have sorted up our directions and improved our management. Since we made a post about some of our endeavours last week this post will be a little bit shorter than usual.

Now to the fun part! We have released our fourth Steam Concept Video!

    Orbital Art!

In terms of visuals the biggest change of Spellsworn is undoubtedly our newly added spell: Meteor Strike!

    [Blocked Image: http://www.frogsong-studios.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/MeteorStrike.jpg]

In addition to the spells we also implemented decals for spellcasting.

We have also added some rocky boundaries to the map!

Awwh, I won't be able to work much more on my submission for the challenge, going to Nice this weekend and not coming back until the contest is over.

Yeah! Feel free. Just keep in mind that for right now Epic has instructed us to keep all assets in a separate folder with your level file. This is for the cooking process and to keep directory structures clean.

Thanks for mentioning it, ocasionally I had it like that anyway!

Why do I always browse this thread when it's late night and I have the munchies, it's literally self-torture!

Thought I'd share my blockout with you guys. Started pretty late but I'm quite satisfied so far!

Even though the game mode isn't in yet I decided to go for a CTF map. I think it could work well with Single-Flag CTF too.

Gonna make a walkthrough tomorrow or something.

Spellsworn - Devblog Post #3 is live!

Here is our third blogpost! We are sorry we did not make it to post last friday but alas you will get it today instead and a video on Friday (19th of September.)

The past week the coders have worked more on the foundation of Spellsworn and yet not much visible to show, currently they are working on a lobby-system and GUI. There will hopefully be a lot more to show in terms of functionality in the coming video.

    Art extravaganza!

In comparison the artists tend to do things that are easier to observe, not to mention the first version of our main menu backdrop. You may be familiar with the Warcraft 3 games and that’s where we took a lot of inspiration from. Below you can see both the photoshop-mockup and the current in-engine version.

I can only do it around 8pm GMT+8. Time differences suck

Awwh, yeah that is bad. We have to get together sometime during the weekend and play, we must be able to find a time by then.

Sorry I missed it, something came up.

It's fine, we figured we should have some casual play-sessions before we get going with a tournament.

    Regarding yesterday's performance:

My mouse wasn't cleaned causing it to react slower.

I had something in my eye.

My ping was bad even though I was the host.

    Sjonsson was definitively cheating.

    My wife distracted me.

A cat jumped on my keyboard.

There was someone at the door.

    Etc.

On a serious note, I have a pro account now so I can setup matches and invite peeps to play (even on paid arenas). Let me know if you have any map preferences. Also, I suggest another session this Thursday.

    Display More

Yes, of course I'm cheating. Sorry, forgot to turn off the aim-sprony-bot hack. You better nail that cat to the wall.

I'm totally in for another session this Thursday!

Camping Grounds is a really good map!

Didn't have as much trouble as this but when I had like 70+ Brushes in the scene I where getting some annoying slowdowns when I moved something and the engine updated the brushes. I just exported an fbx and continued with SketchUp instead.

I can totally see how semi-realtime building of multiple BSPs is quite expensive, I'm gonna change to something like that too.

This has been happening to me too, since I started using the editor a few months ago. Mostly when working with BSP it crashes very frequently. Hopefully they get on it soon

I had an idea it was somehow connected to BSPs but I haven't verified it. Maybe then I'll start building with actual meshes from early on instead of blocking out everything with BSPs.

I should share a kind of legendary quote from Crytek internally, ages ago, when the undo was crashing all the time, the programmer responsible simple said "don't make mistakes" Every time it crashes from undo people say that quote haha. Seriously though, it's very hard to make an undo work well in a real time editor - even more so when you have lightmaps. I do hope they improve it though, it's just about the only thing that is really negative from my week or so using it.

I suppose another down side is - after you compiled lighting on the BSP, if you edit a single shape the entire scenes lighting resets and looks weird, this is kind of a shame too. Ofcourse, for prototyping I should probably be using dynamic lighting only, which would solve the problem

Hahaha! But then why would you ever want to have an Undo function? D:

Yeah that's the problem with static light, I talked to a 17 year programmer vet about static lighting and I asked him: 'When will the static lighting go away?! I hate it!'

To my dissapointment he answered that most probably not anytime soon since it is so cheap in comparison to dynamic lighting and the results are really good if used properly. Before next-gen (read UE4) spec was announced proper I was hoping for never baking a static lightmap again but well fuck me and my opinions right? *cries*

If they won't make the BSP undo more stable than it is right now I'm just gonna use BSPs for REALLY big chunks like floors, ceilings and huge walls.

My conspiracy theory is that programmers secretly are sadists who hate artists and designers who prevent them from making their (actually) good for nothing masterwork systems.

Interesting that you guys have been crashing a lot, I've been working with Unreal for months now and I've had 1 crash. My guess is it's the BSP stuff that's broken at the moment; I'm not using any BSP, entirely models, and mine is pretty stable.

What version are you using? Did you build with a lot of BSPs? How complex shapes does your BSPs have?

Yeah that's right, 22.00 GMT+2. Hope you can make it!

Yeah holy shit it's bad, I refrain from doing it at all and now sometimes I do it on 'instinct' and of course it crashes 50% of the times.

Also, speaking of undo. Saving the map purges the undo history, that really sucks -.-'

Seriously, I'm having at least one crash per 30 mins using undo. Guess I'm gonna stop using it entirely like you said Chris.

Yeah I guess I'm just gonna take my time and make it right and learn how to built it right the first time

Super annoying, but well, all in all the bsp tools are a lot better than before!

Edit: I have the latest version and keep on getting very weird crashes, all when navigating camera and working with bsps. It's probably just me though, it usually is.

Edit 2: SRSLY WTF! I'm just getting random crashes doing nothing special, like changing the length of steps in a stair etc. I have no clue of what's going on.

Don't do hardcore man, you need alt+f4 for blizzards servers. Way to unstable, I already died twice from getting dc:ed and died from regular mobs that would have no chance in killing me otherwise.
