How is warface actually doing? Is there anything more to it than being a generic COD clone? It just doesn't seem to be getting any media coverage at all. I remember wanting to try it out a while ago, but could never get g-face working...

Also they need to come up with better names for their products. warface and gface just sound silly

I played the beta for about 5 minutes, it feels like every other F2P shooter out there. Super laggy, movement seemed to be server side entirely, and the only map I played was a "Well, we have a cargo crate model, so let's make a map of it" map.

    what is g-face?

Crytek's F2P game service. It's not so bad, but it's just nothing new.

All the people talking about going PC only: C'mon, they have Crytek UK, they did Timesplitters, the best console FPS ever (though I don't know how many free radical guys are still there). I bet if Crytek doubled down on consoles it could probably also turn out well. Either way, it would be a huge shame if Crytek were to go under, hope it doesn't come to that.

Wow, I never thought of it like that, just because I'm a dude I have to be okay with bad design because after all, I'm not a woman! Thanks! No you don't have to be "okay" with it. But neither do you get to be the voice for women. I like I said, you don't get it.So essentially you're saying I can't not like things again. I never said I'm the voice of women, I'm just saying that the industry has a problem of sexism, and this project has some merit in pointing out the sexist flaws in games.

Different things cater to different audiences. This is simply a result of men and women being different. Right or wrong, that's how biology works. (I know that some feminists like to ignore that there is a science of biology and neurochemistry but that's beyond me.)

I think part of the defensiveness that comes out as a response to Anita is that video games is one of those rare spaces that still works as an unfiltered outlet for the male mind. Most mainstream media doesn't do this since it has to cater to all audiences and gets watered down in order to not offend anyone.

You know what? I'm just going to quote this and stop here because this post is just that ridiculous.

Being a man isn't an excuse to be shitty. The whole problem is men and women aren't working together to fix this. Being a man also doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on how women are treated in games, which I've pretty much always thought was shitty.

What's the point, really? What is there to gain? Change?

Awareness. The videos are about education, not advocacy.

    Hahahahaha, no.

No they are fucking not. They are entirely about her grabbing attention, much like most media. How naive you must be to think otherwise.

Seriously look at this thread for 1 fucking second, you have a bunch of MEN saying this is a huge issue for women, 1 woman saying this is a huge issue for women and a bunch of MEN saying it isn't.

How about stand the fuck back and let women as a group push this if it is an issue for them, or aren't they capable?

So you suggest men keep making games unwelcoming to women and everything will work itself out? Wtf

We're an inperfect race, with two inperfect genders. People want to work towards achieving perfection, start by looking in the fucking mirror and work towards a greater good. All I see here is a bunch of people pointing fingers and in the end, you got nothing to show for it.

If that Sarkesian chick wants games that catter to her and her cult, she should have kickstarted for a gamedev studio to make a change, instead she decided to be in the business of attention seeking, where she's playing you all like a fiddle.

In the end, this is just a dismissal of any criticism. Some people don't know how or simply do not want to make games, so they then have to criticize what's out there right now. The whole "why don't you do better" response is a shitty cop-out to get out of taking a look at how you can improve. It's a possibility that the people making the games under analysis here simply don't realize the impact of their design choices. This project isn't out there to say games are shit, it's taking a deeper look at how they can improve, as criticism should.

Anita has no authority to decide what is healthy sexuality and what is not. Period. Stay the fuck out of peoples bedrooms! That goes to homophobes and people like her alike.

Yeah, you're right, seeing women as sub-human is completely healthy, regular behavior, and the concept of sexual health (in a conceptual sense, not actually talking about STDs and stuff) is a complete myth.

You like Anita make shit up. I don't even know what mental hoops you jump through to come to the conclusion that sexualized depictions make women subhuman in the aficionados mind. Ther's a thousand fetishes and things people get of to. BDSM is pretty popular or so i heard (among males and females) but surely a women being a submissive slave for sexual pleasure is completely sick in your mind and even more sick the people who jerk off to such depictions. The biggest crime however is to look at big breasted fictional characters in video games.

    Quote

Just like that anti-gay propaganda (or any propaganda, or societal norm), eh? Surrounding people with a concept such as the objectification of women has had a very concrete effect upon people, simply look at the extremely defensive (many times creepy) reaction to these videos, or the #yesallwomen twitter thing a little while back.

It's the same old "video games turn people into psychotic killers"-argument recoined to fit the feminist agenda. Correlation does not imply causation. Like killers who played games had issues to begin with so have misogynistic gamers or girls who feel objectified by depictions of sexy game characters.

So, I'm just going on a limb here, but you're really just afraid of games changing, aren't you? Your only argument is that Anita is "making shit up", but she has time and time again backed up her argument with proven studies and actual psychology. This isn't about whatever fetish you may have, this is about societal problems where because of the constant reinforcement of seeing women as sexual objects, many people think it's okay to treat them like shit. Just fucking read anything that was tweeted with the #yesallwomen hashtag, and better yet, the #1reasonwhy hashtag. There is a problem here that needs addressing, and taking a look at what what we're making is just about the only way we can try to fix this very clear issue of sexism within the industry. But whatever, you're probably just going to dismiss this once again by saying every argument is made up if they don't support your beliefs.

I see as always we get the circular argument going. Say what you want but to me video game characters arn't people. Period.

And Anita Sarkeesian wanting to decide for others what is "healthy & normal sexuality" goes hand in hand with shaming everything that she doesn't approve off. Not sure what else to tell you if you can't see that. It's not different from the twisted and paranoid thinking behind Russia making anti "gay propaganda" laws to protect their youth from "filthy, degenerate and dangerous" influences.

I wouldn't exactly compare her thinking on what is healthy sexuality on propaganda, her reasoning is backed up by studies, which she references in the video. I could say that eating only cheetos is a healthy diet, but that simply isn't true. Of course people in video games aren't real, but their portrayal does have real world consequences

It seems to me that the perfect example of how the pad could be useful is the DS. That console has shitloads of great games that make the second screen a useful part of the experience, i.e. somewhere to show HUDs, maps, inventories, etc so that the main screen can be as cinematic as possible.

I think some Wii U games are doing this and that's really what it's best at. Anyone expecting it to be some revolutionary feature that allows drastically different play styles like with the Wii will be disappointed, but as far as enhancing everyday gaming goes it seems to be a success.

I think the whole 'gaming without a TV' will appeal to few adults, but I'd imagine that kids enjoy being able to use it in a household where there's constant competition for the TV.

IMO, the best use has been asymmetrical play, where one player gets a different screen than the others. In all honesty, DS style game design on Wii U just doesn't work, as the gamepad (or TV) tends to be out of your view, whereas the DS has both screens right next to each other making paying attention to both real easy.

Wow you have completely missed my point. And here i thought i couldn't have marked it more clearly as sarcasm (except for putting actual sarcasm tags on it).

My point is that shaming people for their sexuality is a bad thing. Imagine for a moment Anita's video was about gays and the things that they find erotic. It would be a scandal in this day and age and rightly so! Remember the "they eat da poo poo"-video?

But apparently it's A-OK to shame heterosexual males for having sexual desires and preferences BECAUSE RAPE CULTURE.The undertone of all these videos is "How dare you pig disgusting men to get turned on by that filth!". And she comes of as so misguided because she identifies herself with sexualized female depictions. It's so ridiculous. Of course a gay men who checks out some random pics of muscular male bodies does NOT think of me. That would be so absurd. But it is how Anita's thinking process works going by her videos.

If you think she is trying to shame men for having sexual desires, you're very much missing the point of the videos. Go to about 17:00 in the Women as Background Decoration video, that sums up a lot of her point in the span of a few seconds. Exploring sexuality in games is a natural progression, but the ways it is expressed at the moment is showing women as what is a sexual object, not as people.

lol well yes, why would that sound absurd. But you would still need to pay for the material support and the price of the port.

I mean you don't pay 60 bucks for the physical storage right ? So most of your money is spent into the right of having access to an intellectual property. Why would you need to rebuy full price the access to the same content when you already bought it ? ( i know it doesn't work like that but let's be utopist ) It's all very arbitrary. If you buy a 3dsmax license for exemple, and loose the files, you can have a new one sent to you.

Now i have no idea if GtaV-ps3 ® and GtaV-Xbox ® would be two distincts intellectual properties ? Or if you give it away in the user contract when you buy the game.

Alright, it's in the end user license agreement, basically you sell your dignity. Stop buying video games guys !

Why would you pay again for essentially the same product on a different platform? The porting job itself, certification, distribution, advertising, dev tools, the publisher and platform owners' cut, etc. Sadly, consoles are a much different beast from PC porting, where in most cases the port is free (and, I'd imagine, much easier to make in the first place). I wouldn't imagine this game specifically is very easy to just port over to other platforms because of just how much they have to squeeze onto Xbox and PS3, there was probably a great deal of re-optimizing for different platforms. And if they were to give everyone who owns the game some sort of discount because the same game looks the same a year later, it would be a logistical nightmare.

Take Valve's forays into trying this out as an example: Portal 2 doesn't go from PC to PS3, but it can go from PS3 to PC, with the code they give you. CS:GO, which started with PS3 and PC multiplayer, just had to have that cut because of the issues with trying to patch both platforms at the same time.

In a perfect world, yeah, games would go from PS3 to PS4 as easily as they go from Windows to OSX or Linux (which still isn't that easy), but in reality, lots of people have to get paid for this stuff to happen, as much as it looks like nothing is happening when looking at visual quality. And come on, it hasn't even been a year from the original release!

And especially that the customers who already bought it on PS3 are ok with it, when they would be pissed to pay for an update on steam. ( well ok it's called a DLC, but you pay it the price of a DLC ) You don't rebuy your car if your garage mechanic put a new chromed paint, a wing on the back and shiny pimp wheels.

And the game should be free if you decide you want to play it on Xbox, when you own it already on PS3, right? The way I see it is that this is for people who are either really into the game and wish to keep playing it on a new platform, or for people just buying the game (or people re-buying because their PS3 shit itself ie me)

In the promo shots, Rage was looking like no other game before it, and the mega textures gave the unique look that Carmack always said wanted to achieve.

Of course they're highly impractical and had too many trade offs on old consoles.

I always wondered if it's a tech that could work for streaming directly online, and I mean stream the tiles instead of installing gigs of data.

if it were streaming the textures, it would likely be even more compressed to compensate for most of the US's internet (And imagine it in Canada, where data caps are awful, apparently).
