  • Retirement + Working overseas

Hi guys, since many of you have worked in different countries, making this question to you seems appropriate:

If you work in a country for some years, you will retire some day. But is very common CG artists work, for example, 5 years at crytek frankfurt, 10 years at Pixar and 5 years at Valve

So, there is a chance, any law, to sum the years you worked at different countries to gain the benefit of retirement? Or, if you move to another country the most reasonable option is to make a private retirement plan?

    Thanks.

  • Specular Map question.

Hi guys. I have a question. About specular maps.

So, materials are meant to simulate real world lighting effects, right?

From what I have read, in nature, specular reflections happens when the incident rays hits a flat and polished surface and generates another ray with the same angle taking as reference the surface normal.

    That's the practical results:

I understant the point of normals maps, they change the normals to fake geometry, but the use of specular maps is giving me some doubts:

    • A rough concrete wall is not flat and polished, so why artists create specular maps for them since specular reflections doesn't happen in such surfaces?
    • Also, the real specular reflections are like the picture above, I mean, the surface "mirror" the image comprised of the incident rays, in games that reflection is just a "white blur image". This is to reduce the computing calculations?
    • Also, using normals maps AND specular maps sounds awkward, since a normal map "creates" a rough surface, and in a surface like this there are no specularity.

    Thanks, and merry christimas.

Not really... nowadays games are worked on right up until the day they launch. There'll probably be a release-day patch that fixes a load of retarded bugs considering how open GTA is.

I don't get this, are you trying to prove him wrong? he just said that games are worked up till launch day and they can patch it with a day 1 patch, the fact that the game is already being printed is not a valid counter argument.

    I'm proving him right

Hi everyone, I'm trying to decide what degree I should take to help me to improve skills in CG.

I decided that the tech stuff I can learn at home, so, a course in 3DS max and blah blah blah is not my goal.

Design, marketing, advertisiment and something like that degrees: Too "comercial", of course, you learn many things about art but that kind of approach wouldn't fulfill my purposes.

Any "game design course": Don't know why, but I don't trust them

Visual Arts: Every Visual Arts degree I found in my region is full time. Can't do that by now, but that would be the most suitable course since in this course the student make art (Not only the theorical part), like painting, sculpiting and so on.

Art History: The student won't make art, but a deep analysis of arts in many different periods since nowadays. That's the degree I liked the most:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_history

So, it's a good idea to study Traditional Arts with the intention to work with CG? How it is with you?

These guys allowed me to download many programs I'm working on (3DS max, photoshop, Zbrush and many others). Not to mention a high variety of games. (This list in particular is too big).

Just kidding I bought every software and game I use.

    Super Mario 64.

Nah! It's way complicated, I'm mad because I can't get enought stars to open some doors, I didnt't get the point of this game so far. Stars to open doors? The stars should be used to get more powers, like speed. The game models are not so good too, some enemies are just some 3D primitives linked to each other =( For example, you can count the number of polys of the main character (Mario).

Also, the game has no direction. It just give to you a loose goal and from that point you are on your own. No tutorials, no hints, you can't use cheats and so on. I'm really frustated.
