They recently had a code update: https://lichess.org/blog/XMvcJSwAADkA0hPE/lichess-v2-is-here, I find it amazing that the website works equally well regardless of the device.

I also love and admire their anti advertisement attitude:

Quote Why is Lichess called Lichess? Lichess is a combination of live/light/libre and chess. It is pronounced lee-chess[/i].

Live, because games are played and watched in real-time 24/7; light and libre for the fact that Lichess is open-source and unencumbered by proprietary junk that plagues other websites.

Similarly, the source code for Lichess, lila, stands for li[chess in sca]la, seeing as the bulk of Lichess is written in Scala, an intuitive programming language.

Quote About lichess.org lichess.org is a free/libre, open-source chess server powered by volunteers and donations.

In 2010, Thibault Duplessis began work on Lichess as a hobby project. The site was simple at the beginning, not even checking to see if moves were legal. He made the site open source, which means anyone is free to read the source code and make contributions. Gradually, the site improved and collected users as an enthusiastic volunteer staff assembled to help Thibault build and maintain the site.

Today, Lichess users play more than a million games every day. Lichess is one of the most popular chess websites in the world while remaining 100% free. Most “free” websites subsist by selling ads or selling user data. Others do it by putting all the good stuff behind paywalls. Lichess does none of these things and never will. With no investors demanding profits, Lichess staff can focus on improving the site as their only goal. (...)Most websites (but not Lichess) are infested with ads and trackers. We recommend installing a free, open source malware blocker.[/i]

Also I took a brief look at the programming code for it on github. Even the code is super elegant :)
