Wow, nobody commented on this since 2018!

I went through and re-watched S1 from the beginning with my partner, I got stuck at Shogun World episode when was first aired, as I got to S2 late and it got removed from NowTV before I could watch it all.

I felt like S2 started with so many threads and then became maybe too straightforward, I didn't particularly like the ending (nonsense -from a technical standpoint- "Matrix" narrative device there) I'm not sure I like that S3 is outside the park, but liked what Dolores did there.

Y'all stayed to watch the post-credit scene? ?

Well if they wanted to make their Unreal Engine 4 look like it was developed on a custom branch of the Source engine, just to continue from the original... they succeeded ? I remember watching a video sometime ago where I had the same criticism as per above posts, was expecting stuff to be improved over time but it doesn't seem it will happen.

I haven't played the original, it looked clunky at the time of release, I don't want to get into it unless they plan a remaster/remake. But this looks very intriguing, the little gameplay that is visible in the video seems to take many hints from Dishonored... which is good.

So Xbox games are supposed to look better than PC going forward? ?

Would you get depressed working on something looking this grim? It might be the walking simulator kind of trailers they shown but this doesn't entice me to play at all. Also I don't like that it looks a total rip-off of the Alien source material, without the shooting-fun-part.

If you have doubts watch a bit of play through like the one I linked... I don't know in terms of content what's been updated in which versions, if the complete edition is available to everyone or is a separate edition. The complete edition I'm playing as had some edges smoothed out I'm sure, I have noticed a few minimal graphical touches here and there (like an icon) but I don't understand if and how the additional content affects the original game. There are options to force certain content, but I'm not sure you can force a "legacy" mode.

For example, in the playthrough I've been watching, new locations have become available to Marshall slower than they did for me, I'm not sure if that's just game balance that was altered, if is because I stole some stuff right away and she didn't...

Whatever the case though, I think you will enjoy and doesn't require a big commitment, I mean you can just play a couple day cycles in your lunch break. I got really sucked in the other night because I got one survivor killed and with the winter coming I had to hang teeth and nails to survive, but got through the cold in one sitting.

The game was originally released in 2014, but I've only started playing it last week as a design study kind of thing... but I got really into it! It always got me curious when it came up on the storefronts, but at the same time never investigated it because I gravitate towards shooters and generally action games. I think this was one of the first free games on the Epic Store --at least is one of the first I redeemed-- so it's been sitting in my library for a while, but is actually the game that convinced me to install the Epic Launcher! after watching a couple episodes of the Marshall Dyer's playthrough and I'm really enjoying to keep watching it to see the different approaches. Another thing I like is that this game doesn't hold your hand with tutorials before or during (a big surprise for such a mobile-friendly game), the hints are subtle and delivered through descriptions of places or the chat-baloons the survivors display now and then. It's frustrating at times, but rewarding when you understand the mechanics. So I would recommend it!

This War of Mine is a management/survival game with permadeath. You start with 3 survivors from the war (heavily reminescent of the Jugoslavia civil war) and have to scavange your own refuge and other locations for resources you will turn into food, utensils and appliances. It's a simple point-and-click with timers applied to every operation, in a fashion that really suits mobile/touch interfaces -- in fact I'm surprised this wasn't released first on there and then ported to the big brothers (I'd speculate that Fallout Shelter was heavily inspired by this game). The game works well with gamepad too though, which is actually the way I'm mostly playing with.

The game is divided between day and night: the day is used to multi-task between survivors, making sure everyone is healthy and your sanctuary is upgraded with the resources found in the night, when you control just one scavenger in increasingly dangerous locations. You also return to previous locations a lot to properly harvest what you couldn't carry... this is the kind of game that makes you want to get a notepad out to take notes of where to find stuff, as descriptions get muddled together after playing a long session.

Behind such a simple control scheme, there's quite a complex system, as there are stealth components as well. Survivors all have different backgrounds, which I think work as passive perks that will improve resource usage. Locations are unlocked just with the passage of time but are not always accessible as they are disabled throughout the story to give a sense of the evolving war.

Anyway, I've started playing the "Remastered" on PS4 a while ago and after the latest progress (I got to the sewers camp) I wanted to ask if this game really feels like Half-Life life in many sections -- i'm thinking level design and environments.

I'm admiring how everything feels "right", from environments to details like animations... you can really see the painstaking attention to details from this studio (shame it comes with the price heard in recent crunch reports). The other thing I keep admiring is the soft-stealth that has been implemented, playing cat and mouse in the hotel doesn't feel different than Splinter Cell... except the stakes are higher as Joel is not OP as Sam Fisher; I replayed the very first sneak sandbox the game offers several times just to try different approaches even when succeding in the scenario, I love how you can stun-charge-kill and then disappear, attracting other NPCs on location. Too bad the checkpoint/save system REALLY SUCKS, I can understand PS3 limitations, but this should have been revised for the Remastered verions, or at least ND could have opted for a "chapter unlock" system to allow replaying certain sections.

I was also reflecting that I'm really happy I waited this long to play it: I don't think the saddening intro scene would have hit me as strongly as it did if I hadn't become a dad in the last year, the sequence actually made me feel something.

Phew, what an experience @kleinluka! Happy all turned out alright, also sorry to hear about your parents, it must be very hard to be so far away and unable to visit anyway. I’ve been thinking since this started how difficult would be if I had to go back if something serious happened.

Actually, I lost my grand-uncle a couple weeks ago*, but of course can’t go there, couldn’t even have the funeral anyway.

*(not Covid-19, he had an aneurysm and was already suffering of dementia – which debilitated him at a scary pace, but I think that’s better for him as I imagine he couldn’t realise what was happening)

~ I’ve binged on the latest TWD as well -4 ep in one sitting- leaving ep 15 to go along 16, but I read around it’s not clear when will come out due to the pandemic.

The Uncharted serie might be the next game(s) I play on the PS after completing TLOU… just have too many games started at once and I happened to get really into This War of Mine after starting it as a design research ?

1 mil, not bad at all. Specially considering it's nearly impossible to buy a VR headset right now, in normal times that number could easily be double.

Now the ball is on the side of all the other VR devs, after playing and finishing Alyx, people will be hungry for more games to play on their headsets.

I think it’sa great result. We were expecting Valve to deliver the VR killer app and they did… I wonder if they have the second bullet in the chamber, because if you bought a headset now for HL, certainly you regard what’s available not good enough to spend time and money on. Sure people will try something, but what’s the next big thing?

Regarding sales, I doubt numbers would be much different without the virus: we are still in very early adopter/enthusiast territory, the average gamer can’t afford the headset alone, but let’s not forget the machine you also need. Plus all the inconvenience of setup, necessary space…

dunno if is too many jumps of speculations, but to compare with a product that everybody needs and are more inclined to spend money on, phones: the OnePlus 8 and Samsung S20 released around the same time of HLA; the 1+ (enthusiast audience) sold out, the S20 (much wider audience) not so much (Samsung not releasing numbers, projections say they are selling way less than last year and they are even offering to buy back the phones after couple years(!)).

I really like the colours, especially indoors -so soft and pastels that feel “RTX ON” :D on the outside seems a bit too clean and cartoonish, in particular the bricks of the first spot outside. Looking more closely it seems that the wooden floor texture is not aligned properly or just the surface doesn’t match the texture size/scale… or you just need to add some trim where handrails are

Think was last week we finally got round to watch El Camino. Flawless if it was a tv episode, as a film I think it runs a bit flat, every sequence feels extended for the sake of filling up two hours.

There are a couple of awesome set pieces, but I dunno… doesn’t feel like an adequate, full conclusion to two tv shows, despite not leaving anything in the air (as I started to be concerned towards the 1/3 of movie)
