  • What's going on with your life?

So I was sexting this morning, enjoying a lay-in bed when a colleague knocks on my door asking to fill in for her cos she's still feeling sick after (not) throwing up* playing innuendo bingo thursday night.

In the middle of the conversation (which was going on through the door) I was silent a moment, thinking, she left

Then came back few mins later saying it was sorted... by basically having no one filling in.

*she was just gagging as I understood.

My takeaway from this is the next single console focused game will be amazing. Even a game that only considers the xbone and ps4 will be way better than something that has to deal with OGL on the pc end. If naughty dog gets to start again with a single console focused rendering engine it's gonna be crazy.

essentially old graphics api's on the pc are holding console games back.

You are basically saying the problem is that we are using PCs to build games? Because Naughty Dog targets a single platform, so the only way I can interpret your statement is that to have the best game you need to run it only on the console, from the very first build(?).

Yes it is a bit off-topic, but still I think it falls in the arguments that might make you enjoy or not your job.

I'm afraid my question hasn't been properly understood: it is not my intention to talk about schooling or addiction, just an observation, a point of view.

Thanks Alf Life, you are hitting exactly on what I was thinking.

What? Absolutely not, I never even looked at it that way before! Sure, games can be addictive, but only people with addictive personalities will get hooked by games, if it weren't games it would be something else.

Just because you seem a bit defensive on this I want to clarify that I'm not making accusations of "games being bad"; of course addiction is a complex problem and the problem is in the person suffering from it, but I don't think you can make the judgment of saying that it would be someting else for sure. I probably mis-used the term, I'm not referring at serious conditions but to the condition of being "sucked in" and "one more time" that leads to half hour after half hour of more gaming. Which is very common i think... I very easily fall into that, and it wouldn't even be about grinding!

    Quote

Games offer immersive experiences and worlds, no other media can offer that, that's why I'm making games, to offer people the same pleasure I have when i play a really immersive (or even fun) game.

And I think this is great, and the reason why most game developers do what they do, and why lot of others want to join in the industry... definitely why I would like to work in it.My concern/annoyance is that lots of kids just do gaming, and it's not addiction and I don't think is even enjoying a game, but it feels like they are just consuming: the same way as if they were watching TV.

    Quote from Alf-Life

It's a bit off-topic I guess, but I have found myself feeling this now and then.

    [...]

Thanks again, you are touching on the arguments I was thinking. And i'm not criticising: i love shooters, that's what I play mostly, and sometime I wonder what physcological mechanism makes it fun. Then yeah, there's the infamous grinding and treadmill that became so popular in this generation and makes games real life suckers if you are not careful. For eg I didn't really like Assassin's Creed, but I couldn't help but collecting flags: the parkour mechanic was so fun that I really enjoyed exploring every corner of the cities. But then hated myself for wasting time on such a pointless thing.

I want to add that I started asking myself these questions ages ago, when I had given up on the idea of being able of work in games and I was studying web design/development... and I started feeling uncomfortable about the fact that there is so much attention and money spent on websites and services that at the end of the day you can do without. That pushed me back toward games, making me think: "at least it's about telling stories" (and yes, even sorta schooling about historical events and such)... and now not so much.

  • What are you playing now?

    Batman Arkham Origins (Xbox)

    2048 (iOS)

Hitman Go (iOS) - this i picked it up again after long time (was stuck on a puzzle) and cleared an entire environment and a half.

Gravedigging this 'cos I bought it recently and played several sessions.

I'm very sad in confirming what you Sprony said: it doesn't feel alright.

I mean, control wise you feel right at home, but as soon as you start fighting it's almost enfuriating finding they went to touch up the combat system again, in particular: they changed the timing for the counters, resulting in the game being a bit frustrating and bit boring since I cannot pull the same combos I felt I could have pulled right from the start. Arkham City was a bit too generous, bit too softened from Asylum... but now going back this much. I'm sure when mastered it's gonna be rewarding, but I don't understand why throttling it back so much.

The things they've added up for mixing the thing are ok.

After the first impression and you delve inside the story... it's disappointing! Stats say that i'm about ar 30% already, and basically nothing happened! The setup encounters with the assassins are ridiculous and just not challenging or interesting for now.

And while free roaming everything feels dull, Arkham City might have been a bit too distracting, but in here doesn't feel like they've subtracted side activities to make the story more intense.

    Hope it picks up.

Lastly, don't like the menu, both in style and functionality. The flying bats transition of the old ones never got me bored and they removed it, and navigation feels confusing, progression system isn't very clear imo.

Oh, and on top of all, the super-annoying kingpins tease when you fail are still there, wasting your time. And there are several very lame-shly positioned checkpoints, wasting your time with cutscenes... HOW CAN YOU STILL GET THIS WRONG IN 2013???

Can I like the whole topic?

I really like how the detailing is coming up; contrary to tomm I really like the setting/style… probably it's very dear to me being quite Italian-ish.

    Keep it up!

Do you guys ever get any "moral" questioning* about working on games? I mean thinking that games are intrinsically addicting and for lot of kids is the only activity they do apart school.

I know this is a problem is family related, but I think the question still stands.

*i mean if you yourselves feel guilty at some degree. Mine it's not a question on education, I'm just thinking that lot of kids after school they just play instead of doing sports, petting animals, etc.

Simply put, as I said in my first post, the premise of the topic is not written correctly.

We wouldn't be discussing this if the new consoles were offering the minimum requirement of native resolution.

Resolution (image clarity) is more and more important, is the visual differentiator at the moment imo.

I seriously have difficulties in using my old MacBook since i got the iPhone. You just look at the crispy retina display and then look down to the computer to read a forum more comfortably… and you just retract because screen looks blurry.

I mean my optician gave me glasses even if I've just a small defect: I can see the benefit of those on the laptop, I can do without on the phone.

It's even more important in games, where written things are on top of noisy backgrounds and read from afar.

The current complains are around not because of games "being shitty", but because of what it was expected from "next gen" consoles… which personally I find completely justified! You put out a console on the verge of this TV generation, when the talk starts to be 4k… and you put out machines that cannot guarantee full HD off the box? It's very disappointing.

Then of course you want gameplay and fluidity at the expense of some graphic goodness, but there's not surprising finding.

Got a pay rise, got a bonus, went out with my boy Kinky from amazon game studios - remember being in a club at 5am, then waking up at 2pm this afternoon with my iphone web browser on eurogamer.net homepage, an empty tub of vaseline next to my bed and an urgent need to wash my bedsheets. Guess I had a good night

    wat?

Put it this way, seems like he was fired for sleeping with his manager, lol

Yesterday was fucking scary. The baby got her first two shots and she didn't respond well to them. Eventually she went out cold and we had to rush to the doctor. Luckily, she came out of it a couple of hours later and everything is fine now. But that nearly gave me a heart attack.

Fuck that's scary. I'm glad the situation resolved for the best quickly.

Guess this sort of episodes are convincing lot of ppl to not vaccinate their babies(?).

Here you go. Had to make a new render and optimize it for a print, so its a bit different from the original version, but the shadow works a lot better. Thanks for your feedback.

Watched again last three episodes of Breaking Bad, can't believe they managed to cram so many events in such little screen time.

I also think I did appreciate it much more this time!

Just seen the pilot of Under The Dome, which is a cool setup. We'll see if the rest goes downhill as I've heard.
