  • CSGO SDK -- best practices?

    Quote from Squad

As long as the relative path for the instance is correctly set in the func_instance it should work. At least, that's my experience with it. Never had any troubles with it.

I placed the instance's .vmf in the default SDK folder, as I remembered reading that's necessary, referenced it from the .vmf in my mapping folder and the building wasn't showing up. I simply copied the map in the SDK map folder and the building appeared as soon as I opened the map, so is not like the entity was setup wrong.

Of course a limitation like this (would) make no sense for what it is intended to achieve with the feature... it's just like including a picture in a web page basically.

Like someone mentioned, if I think of DM maps, I can't think of a map where I spent more hours than DM_Morpheus (UT)

    [Blocked Image: http://liandri.beyondunreal.com/w/images/FC-Morpheus.jpg]

but I feel you can't name one map... in multiplayer there are so many game modes hence many maps that are gonna be perfect for the respective modes. And then there's the SP...

    Quote from Bodd Jonar

Completely different layouts but I guess they share some things. Both maps have many rooftops or high grounds where you can see alot of the map from, and both are set in cities in the desert. Can't believe they haven't remade toujane. It was the dust2 of CoD.

When it comes to singelplayer I don't even know what to say, when I think about I haven't played very many singelplayer games.

Ye in the brevity I didn't explain myself properly I guess; what I mean is that I have the very same feeling of perfect rotation, you always meeting someone, everyone has always the opportunity to use the surrounding area to his advantage...

Thanks @tomm, just to expand on that: what do you mean with alternatives... git plugins/terminals (I think to remember that several visual interfaces have been created for it) or other version control systems?

After trying out instances, I want to ask general asset management today.

I've started roughing up a map, as I hit a wall I thought to take a break and built a building that would be used to fence off the playable area, and to test how to use instances.

I have a dedicated mapping/game dev folder where I keep all my resources, so despite saving the building in the default CSGOSDK map folder (it's not mentioned in the Valve Wiki, but I did remember reading this at some point in a topic here) the building wasn't showing up. So I moved the source file of the map in the same folder:

    D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\sdk_content\maps\mymapname\map.vmf
    D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\sdk_content\maps\instances\mymapname\building_001.vmf

and now the building is showing up.

For instances: I can see that the "model" will have the origin where the .vmf origin is. Is there a way through the entity to change that? (if by any chance that comes to need)
Are there other things to keep in mind when using instances? Are there clever ways to use this powerful tool that are maybe counter intuitive?

    For general asset management
I don't like keeping files in default folders, I'm wondering if there's a workaround to make instances work, or if we have to resign to the idea of putting stuff in the Steam folder. If so, what do you pros do: you keep a backup in your folder of choice? Do you keep support files with the map as well, and do you keep only distributables or source as well?
Do you do (map) version control with some software or just save files progressively? (as I'm looking at learning new skills, and version control is a staple in companies, I'm thinking I should probably set up Git or something).

Personally I have something like this folder tree (minus the folders I don't need as I don't make my own models or materials atm)

    |--...
    |--games
    |--mapping
    |--reference
    |--(picture of sorts eventually in folders)
    |--tools (eg: gcfscape)
    |--maps
    |--distributables
    |--mypublishedmap (with all the required subfolders)
    |--mymapunderconstruction01
    |--instances
    |--models
    |--textures
    |--sounds
    |--mymapunderconstruction02
    |--...
    |--textures (materials)
    |--freeresources (downloaded texture packs)
    |--mytexturepack01
    |--source (.psd etc)
    |--exports (final materials)
    |--...
    |--models
    |--freeresources (downloaded models)
    |--mycustomassets
    |--...

Bakup: what do you do? back all of this on an external drive, use some online dedicated service or something more unconventional (Google Drive has lots of free space! :D)

    Hope it makes sense!

I'm not sure what to say really. I can't think of one single map, as I can love different game modes, plus I'd want to put a singleplayer level for compensation...

Can anyone explain me why I had to keep CS running in background for an hour to download workshop maps I'm subscribed to, and there was no download at all in Steam?

Hey I installed CS again a few days ago after the big cleanup I did on Steam, reinstalling only the few games I'm playing.

I wanted to take a look at certain workshop maps but when I'm on the Workshop tab of the play offline, all maps but two have a spinning wheel and nothing happens. There are no downloads going on so I assumed I was all up to date as I've seen in the past days that Steam was downloading some Workshop content!

    Anyone has an explanation?

    Anyone playing recently?

I launched it today and was having horrible performances, after I managed to play thorugh the complete game at solid 60fps, now it's at 35 at best, performing even worse when indoors!

@mr.P do you by any chance know if there have been problems with the latest patch? Has the game been forced to a lower fps? Or with problems with drivers? (I remember that like a week ago nVidia screen came up and installed updates)

I remember seeing the preview article on Polygon way before they started the early access, description and art really caught my attention... then when I saw the footage it seemd to be quite sluggish in terms of performance. Would be nice if they were to do a free weekend.

Should we do one of those "my workspace" photo topics? ... actually, think we had something in the past?

In terms of optimizing space, I have been dreaming of building my desktop workstation inside the desk itself when I will be able. Easy to work on it cos the desk would be the workbench itself, no clunky boxes around, wiring that goes neatly through the desk, no risks of pulling stuff with your feet etc.

I never played any of it :(

I remember there was a demo of the first in a shareware, but dunno if it was bugged, we just didn't know English enough to be able to do anything with it.

Didnt know they were re-releasing it, might be interesting picking it up. And definitely a reboot/remake with original people involved sounds like a great recipe.

That's handy to know and can work flawlessly… it's not 1:1 scale to be precise though.

I think that despite being the most balanced map, Dust 2 is a bit boring and I'd welcome an almost equally balanced Dust 3.

I've always been of the opinion that a competitive map pool should regularly change, say every season. Quite glad Valve has started doing basically that.

havent played in such a long time that don't find footstep sounds weird, they are nice. The one wrong thing is that jump sounds the same everywhere, and soils metal sounds like walking on terracotta roof tiles.

I agree that's confusing, I would expect some float numbers... but still the object in Blender is completely wrong! The cube in Hammer is as big as a the shoulder of the player model, what looks like a volume of about 20 or 30 cm^3, a 10m cube in Blender should encompass the same model at least 5 times. It's basically 1:50 scale ratio by the looks of it.

What happens when you export from Blender to Hammer? Is the size scaled appropriately to the player?

Wonder if conversion tools you use are rescaling the objects.

I just did this myself, but I do not think the scale is in line with imperial, I think fits better with the metric system. 1 cube of source = 1 meter cube.

    Quote from Praelium

There's no need to export your map unless the model is extremely complex. If you set Blender to metric then 1 meter = 1 Hammer unit. Make sure your model's origin and vertices are attached to grid and you should be good to go.

EDIT: I'm going to shamelessly plug my tutorial because it explains a little bit more: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/fi…s/?id=436454108

Sorry, how can this be? I've reported what I found on the Valve Documentation... and as they are American it makes sense to my European mind.

"The Source Engine 'game unit' corresponds to the Grid Unit in Hammer and XSI editors. The Scale used for Source game maps and models is based on the Imperial Foot so Metric measurements do not translate easily"

If it really is Metric I'd be much happier of course :) no conversion needed. But means the wiki is wrong.
