I will say if your not interested in it by the time you unlock the other 2 planets your probably not going to be very interested in anything else. But if you do keep going the enemies and the planets themselves do become more varied and interesting to fight/explore and it can become a fun gameplay loop if you can get used to how it handles.

Yeah I explored the settings panel as it was one of the games brought up for good accessibility [in the GMTK roundup].

I’m glad they have the settings, but I think my critique stands in terms of game design: what is the point of making you press the button at all? I could understand if you had to hold it once you are climbing (like Assassin’s Creed - at least the first one) or time your press to grab of the ledge/surface, or if was a mechanic introduced later for particular surfaces (like in Uncharted 4). The choice doesn’t seem to pose any benefit, be it increased interaction to feel more immersed, or ramp up the skill. It’s just something you have to remember to do… so yeah, bless accessibility*, I was thinking I will do something I would never do and disable.

I hope I can get into it, maybe expectations are my downfall here… I was expecting something very like Batman Arkham in terms of combat (timed counters etc). Might just lower the difficulty while I learn the layout, or change buttons around.

It’s really annoying though how long it takes to reload once you die, it gives me the bad vibe of the cutscenes in Max Payne 3: something completely extraneous to actual gameplay that can break the experience to the point you just don’t want to (re)play it.

*was it added just so they could stuff the accessibility with an extra item and show virtuosity?

Played it a few times (every time a new DLC was out). I remember being a bit annoyed/underwhelmed after my first playthrough (#expectations) but it's the type of sleeper cult success you want to get back to.

I wonder if a sequel will ever materialize, can't remember what's the situation with the property... but if it's theirs, if they have the same problem Valve has with number 3.

Anyone here ever read Brave New World? People love to say we're at the cusp of becoming an Orwellian society, but tbh from what I'm seeing Huxley was closer.

(Curious fact, he was Orwell's teacher.)

One of those that’s been in my list to read and still haven’t got round because have too many books piled up.

I’ve been gobbling up Colony, the TV show, that has several elements of what we’ve seen with COVID.

The interesting thing with these pillars of narrative is that the oppression is always very “conscious”, as in a handful of people really driving a certain objective, whilst what we see is more of a product of a hive mind, different influences. Is not like China were you can tell for sure a few people are driving a very specific policy.

(btw a few days ago in China they banned people from putting fingers up their noses [on camera/social only?])

Yeah I remember being really impressed by the AI when I tried the first one, it felt they were smart like HL’s soldiers.

Have never played any full game of the series tho, due to the exclusivity, and by the time there were PC versions out, or when I got the X360, my interest had completely gone off. The games seemed to just repeat themselves, looking old (and I mean also in terms of mechanics).

I used to replay MP2 on a yearly basis, haven’t done that in a while, but I’ve been wanting to replay MP3 instead, was thinking about it again just the other day.

Like you say the cutscenes get in the way (they’re partially used to mask loads, but they are unskippable anyway), I didn’t mind them on my first play through, but they make impossible to play the time attack modes and ultimately held me back from replaying (plus the back catalog).

I didn’t mind the cover mechanics, games evolve and I don’t fault Rockstar for changing things up a bit… if I remember correctly you could vault or slide over covers for great filmic action.

It was also quite fun to play in multiplayer, shame it lasted little.

    ~

I’ve installed Battlefield 4 and in 3-4 sessions I got to the chapter where you have to sneak ? haven’t picked it up again.

I think it really holds its own, playing right after CODWW2 gives perspective, I’d say that despite being an older game does several things better. Sound above all, the guns sound really solid, but it’s the sound positioning that owns. I found it quite more fun than COD for the impact guns feel they make.

I would buy all the BF (when discounted) if they were making campaigns for each title.

I also started Jedi Fallen Order but I commented in its topic, underwhelming start.

This was on offer again on PS Store, so I bought it the other day. I’ve only played like the first chapter (got into the spaceship) but I’m quite disappointed.

I’m finding the controls and their feeling not up to the standards of previous Respawn games:

    * character movement is abrupt, like if the default stick sensitivity is off and there’s lack of “transition” animation

    * character doesn’t grab ledges

    * when climbing you have to press a button to grab the surface - which is very odd IMO, since the character does stay attached to the surface for a second or two, so I don’te see why adding this complexity – is not like it’s an additional mechanic for I dunno, slippery surfaces, and is not like you have to hold the button to climb, you just press to grab… having the extra input makes sense in Uncharted once the climbing “needle” is added later in the game

    * loading times are awful long

    * default control settings seem awkward

i dunno if I am at fault for comparing this to Batman Arkham, but I thought Jedi was aiming to adapt that sort of experience to Star Wars, but those older games, also powered by (older!) Unreal tech perform better in pretty much all those points I listed.

Based on these expectations, I chose to play at difficulty 3 (of 4 levels available) and it seems pretty harsh, I might just lower it to see if I get more confident with the controls. Also there’s lots of accessibility settings, meaning it’s very customisable for a console game, I might just try changing the scheme or see if I find better settings. Still tho, I would expect a better default experience.

I feel it looks better in this lates video.

It’s one of those projects where you can never win as a developer.

You’re gonna be harshly judged by the nostalgia brigade.

At the same time, so much time has passed that you could slap a completely different name on and it would be just as fine. Swap criticism for how “not right” it feels for a System Shock game with “how too much inspired by” System Shock it would be.

But yeah, they probably have a deal with IGN for exclusive-ish coverage. Can't imagine why though. Money? How much money?

What kind of world would it be were is the press paying to have the exclusives... I mean we all heard stories of devs/publishers paying for good press. I was thinking of an actual publishing deal because only not long ago I discovered IGN owns Humble Bundle, and they do publish games (but I haven't checked where this Aliens title comes from).

I just hate IGN, since that new COD MW debacle I avoid giving them clicks, it's the least I can do.

GOG is giving away the Shadowrun trilogy, (ends in 50hrs) for those interested in adventures and cyberpunk it should be a nobrainer. I haven't played them myself, but I really admired the art when they were coming out and kept them in my wishlist... I even bought one of them but haven't tried it yet :D
