  • [Question] In-Game Editor Level Design

Yeah, totally agree. Just to me seems overwhelming starting like this. Maybe I should just try, I have many ideas... just they seem too big for a one-man team (I know how they say, reduce, make it small... but if one wants to make a shooter or general action game...). Luckily with scripting is possible to do loads and I'm thinking of trying anyway but... if one is having fun building maps, I'd do that. It takes so much practice to create something good. I find we are a bit in a catch-22 situation right now, as if you want to "mod", you are basically forced to use Source, but it's old and clunky and people want to move on.

@Valve ship this damn Source 2! :fist:

From my unprofessional point of view id say that level design is level design, so in-game (console) editors count. Everyone can learn how to draw brushed, but level design is placing the correct items, having the proper spaces, etc.

I'd be more concerned how to then showcase your creation (can you get screenshots and then onto a website?) I wanted to do the same thing with FC3 when I didn't have the money to buy a new PC and was stuck with an old MacBook.

@laminutederire isn't making a game much more difficult than a map? That's the reason why I haven't started using Unity/UE: you have to make a game, and if you're alone you have to lay so much groundwork before you can display your concept. Right now I guess one can only showcase FPS material working on UT.

This is why I think Zuckemberg has been smart acquiring Oculus and then forging an alliance with Samsung, the cheap VR that you slap on with a smartphone is what is gonna get traction when on the other end of the market you have to spend 2k if you start from scratch. And you have to wear wires.

Yeah, "exporting" the models onto a map would be a good way to bypass the problem. It would be like selecting the fonts on Google Fonts and exporting the package ready to use on your project.

I mean that if you can only browse a set of props is useless, you would still have to use the Hammer browser to place a prop in the map. If your project is to bypass that, the only way I know is that you get the default file path from your database and paste it into the entity in the map.

Unless I'm not understanding what is the project supposed to achieve.

Think the most important thing for it to be usable would be the path to copy in the entity(?). Has the "Add to project" button something to do with that, or that is for creating a collection of props for a current project one has?

Is that a Wordpress plugin or something like that, or a proper mockup in Photoshop? Anyway, I might be able to help styling/creating the layout/template if you need help.

Can't see an immediate way to port the videos to Youtube, so here's a Killstagram link. I was pretty pleased about this sequence #fistpump

I don't understand why it's not possible to customize the username yet... but anyway.

Nuke has been my favourite map since I started playing this game, only tried the new one once (and on a shitty computer with a shitty mouse as I'm in LA unfortunately for my CS enjoyment ), but it seems REALLY busy and overdesigned imo. Don't know what you guys think of it, but it seems really cluttered to me. Maybe it just takes getting used to though.

I always hated nuke, never been able to play it with satisfactory results.

This one I haven't tried yet, layout is the same so is not like I'm excited to. Looks great on screenshots, but at the same time I think too is too busy. What's with all those yellow lines?!

Or just have a hostage you can repetitively pick up and drop with no monetary reward or time extension as often as you need to safely check areas or clear the road ahead.

With bots able to camp and climb quite like players, I really don't understand why they had to do the pickup in the first place. Also I think it would be possible to implement a "go to" function.

    I played 101 min and haven't finished.

I replayed many scenes for fun on top of failure. Think the "hardest" was the "lab" (the one starting with player crashing down), which took me a while to pass, and then I wasn't satisfied and wanted to find a cooler set of moves.

I'm very pleased that it works perfectly with the pad, so I can play on the TV instead :)

Congrats @will2k, very interesting test! Yes the gains might not be crazy, but I think valve owes to the players to do a better job with this, so I think it'd be good if the article gained attention with the public.

I would happily sit and play this all day today.

Played couple hours last night as soon as was available to launch, it's just so good. Many interesting scenarios/scenes, I've replayed a few even after beating them. Also uploaded couple highlights, need to check how/if can be shared

Well, mappers would benefit from a more organic set of props, cos the two maps revamped they are basically the same borderline flat shaded industrial theme.

For map rotations with voting, I'm in the same page. Been wanting something like that since the plugins for dod/cs… as soon as finally a new map was selected, server would empty -_-

Maybe they should implement a feature where everyone creates their own mapcycle, and that is matched toward other players.
