I'm with Dan, I saw the thread and immediately thought it was Timesplitters related. I've been diddled. You've diddled me unknown worlds!!!

Lol. They're really pushing that. The doritoes still make no god damn sense to me. It makes me cringe to imagine playing a video game with the greasiest/cheesiest fingers in the universe and getting that shit everywhere. Why would you want that, WHY.

I like it! I don't know if this was intentional or not, but the retro brown kinda theme reminds me of the original Solaris movie.

  • Rise of the Tomb Raider - (Timed) XB1 exclusive

It's really kinda silly the way they try to word these to make it seem like it's exclusive to Xbox forever. First Ryse, now this. Even the original Halo has "only on xbox" stamped on it, though its on PC as well. I know timed exclusives aren't exactly a new thing, and that Microsoft isn't the only one that does it. I just wish they were more clear so people aren't misinformed. My friend bought an Xbone because of Dead Rising 3, they flat out said it was an exclusive and definitely wasn't coming to PS4 or PC, but then 7 months after its release they announce it's coming to PC. I don't understand the timed exclusive either. Is it really the deciding factor to buy a certain console because a game comes out a month earlier on it? Or are they just trying to grab the people who are impatient and can't wait for the other platform releases? Makes you question if the money they're giving them is really worth it at all on their side. I guess that's why they're so ambiguous about mentioning whether or not its exclusive forever.

I really don't understand the point of putting celebrities in video games, it sort of really breaks the immerson imo. That being said, Fox engine is sexy as hell. Here's a nice partial playthrough of the PT demo without any annoying voiceover. Pretty spooky.

Actually, I guess you're right. Hammer definitely isn't is in-engine, but it does render accurate Dota lighting, since Dota 2 only uses deferred lighting which doesn't need to be compiled. I was trying to make an indoor scene and realized there were only deferred lights and a light_dynamic. Since deferred lights don't create shadows and the env_global_light doesn't create any sort of global illumination, indoor scenes look balls.

I guess I'm curious what happens next, if they add back in lightmaps, and how they'll handle it in hammer. Because right now hammer doesn't seem set up for that. Or it's possible they'll go all deferred, and add in deferred lights with actual shadows. It's certainly been done in alien swarm already.

Hehe it's still pretty nice to see a real-time rendering in Hammer itself

Um, unless I'm missing something, the lighting preview is in no way real-time light rendering. They're just projected shadows and flat coloring, a replacement for the shaded textured view. It was actually kinda disappointing after working with UE4 so much. It might look decent for outdoor Dota 2 maps, but anything else it's extremely plain and not very reliable or accurate. It's still better than nothing, but hopefully this is still pretty alpha and we might see proper lighting later on.

Also the quasi-realtime radiosity is awesome, I didn't see that before. Proper day/night cycles in source 2 makes me happy.

People find you personally responsible for ruining their lives. Maybe people are being too close-minded on what to expect from operation maps, if something is different they equate it to being bad. Not that I'm in any postition to give this sort of advice, but part of you should enjoy the attention, and the other part should just ignore it. This of course doesn't apply to valid criticisms.

Buddy is right. Also I would suggest just jumping right into UE4, its changed a bunch from UDK so messing around in UDK wouldn't really benefit you that much (ex. no point in getting used to kismet when we have blueprints now). UE4 is pretty dang powerful, there's plenty of fantastic video tutorials, and honestly if you're familiar with making maps or modeling it shouldn't be that difficult to get into. If you do get the subscription now just hope that 4.2 comes out before your month is up. I initially went in with the plan of only paying one month but they just keep releasing so many updates I can't stop myself.
