Most levels I've made have been Mulitplayer. Often its hard to even think of something to create a level for because although I enjoy video games and creating levels for them, I don't actually play a large variety of them. The most enjoyable level design project I've done was a map for Red Orchestra Ostfront. I love the history of ww2, and so have a love for the video games. The map took about 4 months to complete, and I did it properly that time, playtested loads before moving on. Half the development time was me researching the actual battle, studying maps, gathering accounts of the battle. I even had a dude translating German for me, it was brilliant!

I can understand people want results too fast. My problem is looking at other peoples incredible work who are employed and finding out they are younger than me or have been doing it for less time than me. I think I made many mistakes in my first few years, getting stuck in a 'remake' mod for years, then leaving that with nothing to actually show as nothing was original work. From there I had decent working knowledge of the source engine and Hammer editor, but had nothing to show for it when I started looking for new mods to join.
Bah, if only I could go back in time !

Thank you so much you guys, you have no idea how much it means to me to see people who don't even know me give me great advice. I'm 20 and I was at Leeds Met University here in the UK. I didn't expect it to be so basic, I'd been using 3ds max and Photoshop since I was 13 and was rather disappointed when I was learning the same stuff I had years earlier. Our tutors weren't that great, instead of really teaching us they pulled stuff from google and told us to follow it. The whole thing just demotivated me, I had no freedom over what I created. The start of the second year was less interesting than the first, with a new tutor who was teaching us less advanced stuff than the last. One Tutor got me excited saying we'd be doing some normal map baking. The next lesson he said forget it, we aren't good enough.

I'm starting to think the only way I could have a chance of getting into the industry is with a degree, but thanks to my cock up the chances of being able to go to University again within the next 10 years are very slim. I'm such a fool for ever signing up to that games design course, now that I've quit it I can see how horrendously crap it was.

The ladders and logs I also made myself. I've uploaded the vmf along with the assets for you to take a look at, its still validating at the moment so wait a bit.

Before i started the structures of the cave I had a look at what tutorials were available on them, as well as looking as other examples. I managed to take a look at the EP2 .vmfs and noticed instead of using one brush for say 6 displacement faces, they used 6 brushes which overlapped each other . I couldn't really understand why at the moment, but I followed the same example and realised why they had done it when it came to sculpting the caves. It made sewing the disps together and subdividing them so much easier, the only downside I found was view ports became a confusing mess. Anyway its rather difficult to explain so Ill let the vmf do the talking.
Cheers

Only the texture used on the exterior rocks was my own, The custom meshes and textures were made myself also. The rest is all Ep2 content.

I remember this scene in the goonies, I had a crush for the chick and when she jumped off the board you could see her panties

oh man me too, I always wished I was the kid when she mistook him for the older dude in the dark. lucky bastard.

It looks sourcy. Not in a bad way though.Looks really good, liked the ship-shot the most. Was Dear Esther an influence?

Dear Esther was one of my main influences
along with tomb raider, 'The goonies' (awesome film) and a bunch of other stuff which I'll write up in the next few days. The map is for Hl2 : Ep2, chose it because of its cave assets. I maxed out the displacement limit which I hadn't foreseen foolishly, which limited what I did with the outdoors. I probably could cut down on the displacements in some places but I think I'm done with this exercise now.

I saw it updated on moddb and got all excited.
Where is PD:S Seldoon? Such a shame it was left alone.
