I love the first shot, but the curves in the second shot really bother me - they just don't feel like they belong in the Q1 style. I'm not sure you even need to detail it much more, either, short of some extra floor trims and texturing the sides of the dark plates at the top of your first shot. Maybe some ceiling variation to your second shot for some depth, but the beauty of that style really is in its simplicity - I think decking it out too much (like with the curves) might actually hurt it in the long run.

Again, good tips. I'm glad I posted this here. I understand where you are coming regarding the curves. Luckily, it's only this area that's 'curve heavy'. The rest of the map has 3 small curved stairs and that's it. I like them myself but I have to see the final result to determine if it breaks the style I'm going for. I want to add more detail but I'm certainly not planning to go overboard. It's my first attempt at a finished map so I'll probably lack the skill to make it too detailed anyway

The layout has been well tested over at Promode and Quake3world. So it should be decent. I got quite a bit of inspiration from The Slipgate Duplex by CZG and Vondur. Scampie's work looks great as well. I'll be sure to play it and hopefully get even more inspiration from it. Thanks for the tip!

Also, I plan to add more detail at a later date. First, I want to go trough the entire map, texture it and pretty it up a bit. As soon as that is done, I will go and try to make it more complex

Yeah, I heard it was the most stable release in the series. I can't wait to get started. I had a lot of fun with the first two games

Don't play COP with Complete. Its primary worthwhile feature is integrating Amtosfear (a weather/graphics mod) and the original content is buggy and performance ruining. If you've never played it before, install nothing, or at most Atmosfear (go into its options and turn off the gameplay features like psi storms and blowout zombies), and if you have, try SGM (if you want a vastly expanded experience), or Misery (if you want a more challenging and atmospheric experience).

I thought the complete mod fixed a lot of bugs? I played the first 2 games without mods, just the patches of the developer. I like to keep it as close to the original as possible. I choose this one because it looks nice and features sound interesting. I'll go with the original game instead. Thanks for the tip!

I came across an old and unfinished Quake 3 map. Reinstalled Radiant and started to play around with it. I'm going for the very original Quake 1 look

Anyway, here are two editor shots. The lights are temporary of course.

  • What have you watched recently?

    • April 16, 2012 at 1:47 PM

I watched Nightwatch the other day. It's an oldie, I remembered the trailer but never got around to watching it. It's a thriller about a student [Ewan McGregor] who takes a job as a Nightwatcher at a morgue. Bad things happen. Not exactly the kind of movie I expected and it leaves loose ends here and there but overall, it was a pretty enjoyable movie.

I'm finishing Skyrim as we speak. I'm on 101 hours now and half way through the main quest. It goes really fast since I already explored and/or cleared every location they are sending me to. I think I'll end up at 105 hours, max 110. It's a lot of time but I had a blast.

I installed the complete mod for Stalker: Call of Pripyat. After 100+ hours of RPG, it's time for a shooter

you have to take into account that for stealth to be successful, the level design needs to be built around that mechanic. i think one of the reasons it worked in c1 was because of the level of openness the game allowed for. looking back at deus ex, there's always at least 3 different ways to get from one section to the next, and so even in what seemed to be very linear sections, there was always an opportunity to take a different approach if you felt like it. c2 is so linear that it barely allows for anything else than just one type of gameplay, namely gunplay. stealth really feels like it is the unloved twin in the family. i haven't gotten to the end of c2, but in many of the sections i went through i was experiencing huge problems with taking alternate routes around patrols and soldiers, and many times i was just straight up forced to try and stealth past them, often with them noticing me just as i went by. ironically, my best c2 stealth encounter was at the helicopter boss in the lab, where while the soldiers knew i was there still couldn't find me. this approach was also a bit forced due to the sheer amount of damage rocket launchers would do.

QFT! I enjoyed C1 much more then I enjoyed C2 for exactly this reason. It's not about skipping parts of the game. It's about using technology, like stealth, to your advantage. It allows you to take out your enemies ninja style. C2 simply didn't allow this. Of course you could use it effectively at some points, but you almost always were caught which resulted in all out warfare.

Half way through I was sick of trying and just went for armor and kept ripping off turrets to blow everything to pieces. There was little freedom to be found in C2. I hope they return to the gameplay of Far Cry and C1 and I rather see a different setting then NY again. Far Cry 3 looks to be a return to a more open shooter.

If you call blurry textures, a static world, invisible walls everywhere, alsmost no story, lots of backtracking, ridiculous quest system and worthless ending fantastic then by all means, it's a fantastic game

Brian Fargo claims in this interview that your story isn't correct. To sum it up, he says the publisher does QA and not the developer so it wasn't Obsidian's fault.

I read a preview yesterday about the MP basically stating the same thing. It sounds promising!

I suspect they will add a 'horde' mode as well in which have to keep of wave after wave.

    SPOILER WARNING:

I've poured 95 hours into the game and I'm still loving it. Took me a while to explore the entire map. Of course I didn't find everything but I certainly discovered most areas. I'm done with all the major story lines except for the Dark Brotherhood. I think I have a couple of quests left before I've finished that as well. I did about half of the main quest and before I finish it I have to decide if I'm going to do the civil war storyline. I tend to lean towards the Empire because the Stormcloaks are racist bastards and seem to be corrupt.

I rather see a free Skyrim instead of having it under the control of the Empire. But I don't know if I need them against the Thalmor. I hope there is a chance to kill all those arrogant elves. Long story short, am I missing out if I don't do the civil war? How long does it take? Because I want to move on to other games as well

    Suggestions would be appreciated

Yes, the driver thing was unfortunate. But for the rest, they really got themselves to blame. I mean, it's a dumbed down mediocre console port at best with very little support and almost no communication whatsoever. They promised the tools at launch and for the last 6 months all we heard is "soon".

I'm not a PC fanboy, I'm a gamer and I own both a game PC and all the consoles. So even if it's a port and mediocre, I could have swallowed that. I just don't like being lied too. I got little hope for Doom 4.

I'm very great-full for this thread. Even though I've already seen most of them, there are a couple I've missed. This just really says "SciFi Movie Night" with my mates

Anyway, I'm shocked that nobody mentioned Alien. It was made on relative small budget of 8.4 million dollar. Wouldn't call it low, but compared to nowadays, it's cheap.

Roger Corman also has a lot of low budget scifi movies on his track record. But most people wouldn't call those movies gems

Don't forget Dune, a rather expensive and poorly received movie at the time but it has gathered somewhat of a cult following.

Last but not least, Event Horizon deserves a mention. Definitely not low budget but a gem in my opinion.

Going off topic, I must say that I find the lack of scifi horror/thriller movies from the last 15 year rather disappointing. The only thing that came close was Pandorum and I got high hopes for Prometheus. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I absolutely love the original by Verhoeven with Arnie. Clearly one of his best films!

I'm not excited about this one, but I'm going to see it. It has Jessica Biel so....

After the Duke Nukem Forever and Rage debacles of last year I stopped with preodering games. I'll await the reviews first, even if they are being held back by the publisher. Ofcourse some games, like Diablo 3, are instant buys
