Don't forget, like Pogo said, that people can team up if they wish to do so. Could make it less scary. Plus, you would not only be making it for the Core. It can be submitted to the workshop as well.

Now I'm going to give you something to complain about Dux:

I'm at work today. But a colleague is missing. A good colleague, someone I really like and who I've worked with for 8 years. So I ask what's up? Apparently she has gotten special leave. She was working last Thursday when she just came back from a couple of days off due to her favorite cousin's wedding. They are Hindus so those weddings take some time. Anyway, her cousin left for his honeymoon the day she got back to work. She received a message that afternoon that it was her cousins plane that was shot down. She broke down right there, the whole department in tears and she was brought home in shock.

In the mean while we have a prime minister who doesn't have the balls to take action while the bodies are being toyed with and thrown in trucks. My blood is boiling.

You guys are providing us with some excellent feedback. Keep the discussion going! Some reactions to your comments below:

    Quote from FMPONE

For some reason I never considered that, it's not a bad idea. An ambiguous theme might work for it

I don't know if you can remember FMPONE but I already proposed a design challenge in which participants are free to use the engine of their choosing. We liked it, but postponed it to the winter period. So Chris, it's coming eventually

    Quote from FMPONE

What if we encouraged people to stream their work so others could observe and learn? Maybe it could coincide with the streaming functionality to be added to Mapcore soon

The Challenge will have it's own support thread in which people can help each other. Additional streaming would be a huge bonus. So we should encourage and give them a platform if they are willing to do that.

    Quote from Marcem

I would be super into an old engine challenge (Quake or Doom would be mega-sick).

Source would be a good choice just because of how easy it is to get up and running (Haven't tried UE4 though). I would say that challenges would be better tied to specific games though.

You guys are not alone. I'm actively looking into the possibilities of doing something a long these lines.

Castle did some impressive level design for the upcoming UT.

In regards to some of the comments. The challenge hasn't been made yet. So it doesn't have to be level design per se. By the looks of it Source will win and then we could look into something like a map for one of the games using Source. However, I for one would rather see Unreal Engine 4 win. Some of you have been experimenting with it and what I've seen so far impresses me a lot. Especially in light of the recent Unreal Tournament news, I'm really hoping some Core members will eventually step up and make something for that (none challenge related btw).

Vilham is right about the sharing of course. My philosophy has always been:"Sharing, is caring".

    Hello Mapcore,

We're always thinking about what to do next and instead of going in blind, we like to see some numbers and gauge interest levels. Of course it's well known that we are a Source oriented community but time hasn't stand still and the engine market has changed. Id tech has faded into history. Source is loved, updated and widely used but in a lot of regards outdated as well. UDK has been and still is a great driving force behind last gen games and indie's but the same can be said, to a lesser agree, for Unity. Not to forget the new kids on the block with their subscription based models, namely Unreal Engine 4 and CryEngine that are leading us into the future.

Which brings us to the question at hand. If the Core would do a Challenge, which engine would you like to see being used?

Please take a moment to fill in our poll.

    Thanks!

Bullshit, if that was true, we would still be holding grudges for the Crusades, the Colonizers, the Germans, you name it. The solution for this lies in education.

Noble but unrealistic (not that mine is any better). Point is, there's been so much bloodshed and retribution. Vengeace upon vegeance that there's no stopping it, ever!

This war has been going long enough that time should have taken care of it by now, only reason it hasn't is because the previous generation poisons the minds of the new, instead of teaching them to think for themselves and make a call.

You make it sound so simple dude. I'm not arguing that you don't have a point. Most of us here still hate the Germans and that's 70 years ago. Mostly due to the older generations telling us the horrors of the Nazi's, so yeah, you are absolutely right about that. I'm just saying it's unrealistic to expect that to happen. Those people hate each other, it's been going on for a long time, by now no one came out of it unscathed. It's not like people are magically going to start and turn the other cheek. Not while this still happens on a day to day basis. The only reason why our hatred for the Germans slowly vanished is because there hasn't been any trouble since. Only then will the wounds heal and the scars become less apparent each year. Same goes for your other examples. None of it was fixed by education. All of it slowly faded because it stopped happening and you make it sound like all is good, which isn't so. There's still hatred for a lot of those things everywhere.

So again, I like the way you think and I truly wish that they could do what you propose, but it's still unrealistic and my point (not about nuking but about yours being unrealistic) certainly isn't bullshit (whether you agree with it or not).

Listen, everybody is going to dislike this post since it will be labelled radical or extremist but regarding the holy land and Jerusalem in particular, I have a very simple and effective solution. First a bit of history, since there's not a place on this earth that has seen more bloodshed:

    Quote

During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.

I say, evacuate all the people and nuke it. Nuke it until there's nothing left but a radioactive crater. Gone are all the monuments, temples, churches and mosques that people are fighting over for centuries. Leave nothing standing. Fuck that unholy place where millions of men, women, children and animals have died in the name of different Gods. If there is a God, surely he must have left that place a long time ago.

Update from Eurogamer. Seems like your wish comes though Minos. Lots of melee stuff. Here's the source and some bits I liked:

    Quote

"This new chapter in the series is a reboot of sorts that gets back to the classic roots of fast-paced action. "Doom is not about taking cover," Stratton said. "It's not about finding a place to hide to let your health regenerate. It's about fast, fluid combat, dodging projectiles, finding that next target and charging forward with nothing in your way of slaughtering that next demon." "You'll see crazy demons. Unbelievable mechanical demons built through secret and corrupt UAC experiments. Demons like hell knights, the cyber demon, revenant, and many more. Whether these demons are something familiar or something totally new, each of them is designed to create a unique combat experience, regardless of whether you are fighting against it, killing it, or being killed by it." "We're creating Doom to make you feel like a fast, improvisational, brutal killing machine." "But the guns weren't the star of this demo. The marines hands and feet stole the show. Injured demons were eliminated quickly with melee finishers that would fit right in with any Mortal Kombat game."

Yeah, it's misunderstood. It would make no sense to do that. Plus, Bethesda has always gond with Steam and the Steam Workshop. No, not going to happen so you can put away that pitchfork Dux

I think it's better I withdraw from this discussion. I''m pretty mad right now and all this brainwashed talk from our Russian friends makes my blood boil. I'm not saying this is their fault (Russian) and it's probably, as said before, a tragic unjustifiable misunderstanding, I just can't handle some of the ignorance on display here. Peace.

id Software unveiled the new Doom game to attendees of its QuakeCon event in Dallas, Texas on Thursday. The game, simply titled 'Doom', was shown running at 1080p and 60fps at the event, where id Software confirmed it to be built on its new id Tech 6 game engine. A single-player demo was shown at the event, according the Twitter accounts of several in attendance. The demo revealed a Mars setting, which is once again under assault by demons from Hell. Scenes both inside and outside of the UAC research facility were shown. Attendees describe impressive particle effects and environmental detail, with an art style not too dissimilar from Doom 3. Other familiarities include several iconic enemies, and the return of fan-favorite weapons including the chainsaw and double-barrel shotgun. The new Doom, however, will feature a heavy focus on melee combat, revealed id. "A key feature will be stunning enemies with a shot, then smashing their face with your boots. It's happened five times already," described PC Gamer via Twitter. Players will be able to rip off the limbs of enemies, it was revealed. In one scene, id demonstrated ripping off the arm of an enemy guard and placing his severed hand on a hand-scanner to unlock a door. The demo concluded with a brief appearance from the horned giant that was seen in the E3 teaser trailer. "Fast paced competitive multiplayer" is promised, but id wasn't ready to talk about it at the show, saying it'll deliver more info "later". The new Doom will be an Origin game, the developer confirmed, although it's unclear if this means it will be permanently exclusive to EA's digital distribution service. id is yet to confirm when it reveal the game to general public since having pledged to give QuakeCon attendees an exclusive first-look. "We'll have plenty more to show everyone at a later date, but we didn't want another QuakeCon to go by without doing something special for the amazing QC community and id supporters that have been with us for more than 20 years," said the firm earlier this month. In April 2013, it was confirmed that the new Doom had been "rebooted" after a prototype failed to "exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect".
