If your current job kills your spirit and you are already single, with no other ties and have chance to go to the city you love, I would say, do it.

  • THQ... Next Crytek?

    Update:

    Quote

Crytek has addressed its financial situation after reports of employees missing their paychecks and departing en masse. The company behind Crysis and the CryEngine clarified in a statement to GamesIndustry International that it is in a "transitional" phase from a development studio to an online publisher, which has "required us to refocus our strategies. These challenges go along with an increased demand for capital which we have secured." Crytek has remained relatively silent on the issues up until now, though it did deny claims that it is on the verge of bankruptcy. "Internally, we have acknowledged that the flow of information to employees has not been as good as it should have, however we hope you understand that communicating details of our plans publicly has not always been possible," the representative noted. Crytek had been in the spotlight in recent months as widespread reports told of critical financial woes at the studio. According to reports, 'around 100' developers left Crytek UK after having not been paid in full for multiple months. Crysis 3 and Ryse producer Mike Read also appears to have departed from Crytek.

I hate reboots, remakes or whatever you are going to call it. Continuing a series with a different lead is also not done in my book. Especially if it is Mel Gibson who was replaced. So I didn't want another Mad Max and let's be honest, we all want to forget the third one. But then came the news that the original people were behind it. Ok, doesn't guarantee success but I'm less skeptical now. Then came the news that Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were cast. Ok, I'm interested now. But now we have the first trailer and Sprony's hype meter went through the roof. MUST....SEE....THIS....NOW!

No trouble navigating. There's always the arrow that points to the next waypoint (and waypoints are placed in a very helpful fashion to help you through the more twisty and turny areas).

I agree with the bullet-spongyness of enemies to some extent. The Devil Walker fight outstays it's welcome a tad by being so incredibly spammy and repetitive.

Ok, well I do see the arrows, but that didn't mean it was clear as to where to go. Maybe it was just the map I played.

Are you guys having trouble navigating certain levels? A lot of times it's not really clear to me on where to go. Also, it's also not clear how to benefit from Fire teams. At least not to me. A lot of players just run by. Plus, I feel that if you play on hard and encounter a higher level boss, it's awkward that you are pumping an warehouse of ammo's and grenades in him to bring him down.

Depends on what you buy and what you pay for it. In this current market, with prices at a all time low, you can seriously get dream deals.

Action/Thriller mostly. He's into the Godfather, Band of Brothers, James Bond, The Bourne Identity, Ocean's Eleven, Deadwood. That sorta stuff, can't really think of stuff that's comparable in the gaming realm cos mostly they don't have a narrative that's as suspenseful or strong. Perhaps a heist game like Monaco might be up his alley, I'll ask.

So far he's enjoying the Walking Dead, at first I thought it would be too hard but it's surprisingly easy, even when he uses the trackpoint on his laptop! Succes!

Your father has excellent taste. In that case I would go for The Wolf Among Us as well. Look in the adventure genre. Think games like the Monkey Island remakes and Siberia 1/2. I recently bought the Steam version of the RealMyst remake for my wife. Dragon's Lair and Space Ace both come to mind. Almost no game play and lots of entertainment. You can't really go wrong with these.

Last but not least, give him the new XCOM. It's easy to get into but has a lot of depth. Same goes for Wasteland 2.

  • Mapcore Challenge - Engine Preference

    • Sprony
    • July 26, 2014 at 6:50 AM

Seriously guys, let's not turn this into an engine versus engine discussion and let's certainly not dismiss each other's choices by saying that they're stuck in the past or that they don't have a game to map for. That's not what this is about. This is about feedback and you all gave us plenty of that. I think so far that every single opinion has been valid and well founded. To make things a bit more clear, I'll share the ideas that I had in mind. Please note, that is my vision alone. None of this has been approved (yet).

    UE4:

    • There's currently a 2D concept competition going on over at Polycount. UT is still in early development so the only thing we could do now is make game play shell since there are no visuals yet. I would like to setup some mini challenges to get people familiar with UE4. Something like getting a prop in game, doing custom texture work, a very small scene, etc. In the mean time I would contact Epic and see about trying to work together on a Level design contest further down the road. They way I see it, this entire community could really benefit from getting in early even if the new UT isn't that big of a success. It brings in new blood, it diversifies our focus, it could give us an edge if it does become a success or at the very least allow members to create a better portfolio which will hopefully land them jobs. I absolutely see no downside in going this route.

    Source:

    • We love it, we come from it, it's well known and his has a wide array of games that are still played everyday. It's a safe bet and I would in no way ignore that. We could do all sorts of Source challenges. Ranging from maps for specific games, scenes, something like the door challenge we did in the past, hell, we could even go bananas and do a mini-mod. Source is fine.

    Old School:

    • I would love to go old school for once. Quake 3's 15th year anniversary is coming up. I would like to pay tribute to that. Or we could go further back and do a Doom map or a Quake map. People have been mentioning this for a while. I'd like to push the Quake 3 thing for instance.

    Misc:

    • I come from Quake communities where we did all sorts of crazy stuff. Speed mapping would be one of them. Could apply here as well. I've run several successful Pass the Maps in which each participants does it's own corner of the map. Map Jams, in which you are to stick to a specific theme and texture set. Even brush limitation contests. So only use a specific number of brushes for the entire level or have the map fit in a specific space. The list goes on.

Also, the above is pretty much all engine related. But, I strongly believe in the freedom of choice so I suggested (in the past) scene challenges for which you can use any engine you like. For instance, we could do a scene challenge this Halloween and make it about that. I would love to see what the Core does with that.

So, long story short, I want to do a whole lot of things that targets as much as the Core as possible. Certainly not everything will interest everybody but by mixing it up no one should be left out in the cold. Don't forget that this is about coming together as an community, improving and challenging yourself, broaden your skill set, giving you new portfolio stuff (depending on what challenge you do) and bring more life to the Core. So please, don't form groups, because this is for all of us.
