Valve suspected to have 'soft-launched' Source 2 engine

New Dota 2 Workshop tools believed to carry signs of next-gen game engine A group of modders and game enthusiasts suspect that Valve has quietly soft-launched Source 2, the long-awaited game engine that could be the building blocks for future games such as Left4Dead 3 and Half-Life 3. In the early hours on Thursday, Valve announced it had released Workshop Tools for Dota 2, allowing modders to create and distribute custom game modes. Notably, the new tools have relatively high system requirements, such a 64-bit version of Windows and a DirectX 11 compatible graphics card. The first Source Engine was the building blocks for key Valve games such as Half-Life 2, Portal 2 and Dota 2 In a message posted on Steam, Valve acknowledged that "this is a developer focused release and currently has high system requirements" but did not suggest this was tied to its Source 2 engine. However, hours after its release, a modder who posts on Reddit as 'RoyAwesome' has gathered evidence to suggest, as is his belief, that Valve has "soft-launched Source 2". At the centre of his theory is that, while Dota 2's assets are the same in the new Workshop update, the code is meaningfully different. "Everything in this package is a new game," he writes. "It's all the Dota assets and code ported over to Source 2. That's why Hammer [a game editor] is different. That's why the console is different. Guys. Valve just soft launched the entire Source 2 engine." That suggestion in itself has triggered a debate on the Reddit thread, where users are cross-examining this claim. It could be the case that Workshop is related to Valve's new tech, but is not outright the engine itself. The thread author points out that "everything that would share a name with Source is named '...2'. That's engine2.dll, vconsole2.exe, vphysics2.dll." Valve has not commented on the matter and was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press. The corporation is known for continually upgrading its technologies, which could mean its Workshop update is not related to Source 2. In March, Valve managing director Gabe Newell said that Source 2 will allow for enhanced user-generated content. "The biggest improvements will be in increasing productivity of content creation," he said at the time. "That focus is driven by the importance we see user-generated content having going forward. A professional developer at Valve will put up with a lot of pain that won't work if users themselves have to create content." Yet it is a matter of debate whether Valve has soft-launched Source 2 as part of that user-focus philosophy. On Reddit, RoyAwesome also claims that: "The Workshop also allows for different dlls to load and render different assets (vmaps are rendered by worldrenderer.dll, etc). This is a completely new architecture from Valves previous system. "This bit alone would indicate a significant amount of engine work has been done to split these bits out of the engine and into their own libraries. That means the engine is also completely plug-and-play with new engine level components if valve creates them for different games. This is pretty freaking huge."

I'm interested in hearing from the Source guys if there's truth in the story above. Oh and for generalvivi, news source and Reddit source.

    woah, didn't see that coming.

I haven't played the 2002 remake, are there fixed camera angles? That's what I loved the most about resident evil 2 and 3.

Yes and they said they wouldn't mess with the controls and movement so I can't imagine that they would touch this. It should be still there in the new version.

That's right. The brilliant 2002 remake of Resident Evil (which I played fanatically) is coming back and how! Best game news for me this year

    Enjoy!

The game will be released digitally for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC in early 2015. It will feature full 1080p visuals as well as support for 5.1 surround sound audio. Players will be able to pick between playing in the original 4:1 ratio or switching to 16:9. A classic control style, in addition to a style suited to modern games will be available to choose from. Developed by Capcom Production Studio 4, the 2002 Resident Evil remake took the seminal PlayStation entry and updated gave it a complete visual overhaul as well as introduced new mechanics and systems from later entries in the series, as well puzzle design tweaks.

Anyway, perhaps I should have stated that it's not officially confirmed but all evidence suggest it (including Guardians director and cast). Here's the source Mr. Lazy.

Excellent work Sock. I created a thread in the Gaming forum in which I promoted the Jam as well. Can't wait to get home tonight and play the rest (I beta tested Skacky's map). I only had a quick look around in yours but it's lovely as always. Except for the skybox doing weird things but I think that's engine setting on my part. I hear you are only going to do one more and this time with low grav?

Yeah, I still do. There's an active community releasing stunning maps that keep this game alive. Their content is so good that, in my humble opinion, it still beats a lot of the modern day competition. That's why I made this thread, because you are really missing out. Some basics:

If you want to keep up with the Quake community visit Func regularly. If you want to see the best releases being played by the awesome Daz, subscribe to his Custom Gamer Youtube channel. Of course you don't want to fiddle around too much so use Quaddicted for easy play.

I'll keep updating this thread as I find new gems. The latest being the release of the Jam2 session featured below.

I had the privilige of testing Skacky his map. Here's a glimpse of me kicking ass:

Exactly. In the first place, make a good game. But then rely on news sites to spread the word. Post WIP shots. Keep people updated. Have alpha en beta tests. Do community contests. Try to get communities involved, etc. This should get you somewhere. Go digital only, cut out reselling that way and the middle man. You might not reach the same amount of people but if you can make the games cheaper it should or could even each other out. Just my 2cts.

I think that we forget the role of money in this discussion. Reading up on all that's posted online and doing interviews with industry professionals, it seems to me that a lot of triple A titles are not developed cost efficiently. There's a lot of crunch time, mismanagement, publisher pressure, etc. Kevin Levine just closed his studio to get away from 100+ teams to be more efficient (if you believe the Internet). I'm in no way an expert but at the very least I have better understanding now on how games are made. With that in mind, fully realizing that triple A titles do in fact cost a lot to be made in the first place, I can't shake the feeling that if they would tackle it differently (better management, smarter design decisions, smaller teams, more manageable projects, better vision, better working relationship with the publisher, better distribution, far less interference, less ridiculous marketing costs, etc) that they could make these triple A titles for a lot less money.

Cant believe that you left out Commando Sprony

Btw, I think some of the worse arnold movies like, End of Days, 6th Day, Last Action Hero etc. suffer from poor editing. They're too long and oddly paced. I think if you would re-cut these movies properly they would be much better!

Yeah, I know Buddy. I love Commando. Must have seen it 50 times. I know it by heart and it's high up my list but the other ones are just better imo.

Actually, The 6th Day wasn't that bad. End of Days wasn't terrible either (not calling it good though). The problem with Last Action Hero is that it was way ahead of it's time. It made fun of 80's action while the era hadn't ended yet. If they would have released it in early 2000 it would have scored much better. No, if we are going to talk about terrible Arnold movies I would have to say:

    1.) Red Sonja

    2.) Batman and Robin

    3.) Jingle all the Way

4.) Junior (seriously, who wanted to see him pregnant?)

    5.) Collateral Damage
