Hey, guys! Need some pointers... Trying to make a rock model in Mudbox but I'm never really happy with the result. Can someone point me in the right direction for creating them? In terms of brushes, settings etc. Thanks! Here's what I got so far.Image

First off are you using any reference? I think not: because concave shapes like that are very rare and generally rocks are not concave at all. Also I can still see the cube base mesh you started from. Rocks usuallyt have quite a few flat surfaces, That are eroded away by the weather. Look at nature and try to figure out how and why things end up looking like they do. Then try to replicate it. Start deforming the base mesh then scrape of parts and only when you have the overal shapes done move on to smaller details.

So I finally started toying around with the thing. Made a 3 stage layout map base, then started goofing around to make the puzzle for the first stage. After some time came up with the idea of creating a very big remotely operated and overly complicated cube delivery machine:

    [Blocked Image: http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x192/AtsEst/OverloadingPeTI_01.jpg]

Editing became a slug, the rebuilding process pretty much froze my PC and it took 10 minutes just to kill the process with task manager. Despite all of this I'm totally hooked :bananawrench:

Btw has anybody else experienced a bug where when zooming with the mouse wheel in the editor the whole map dissapears from view and the only way (at least to my knowledge) to get it ot show again is to reopen it?

Agreed, good stuff Dejavo@AstEst I was looking at your screens again and noticed something that I now can't unsee, what's with the tree plane textures on one of the models (most noticeable in the first shot)?

Yeah I know (ther are some additional things on the spruce, like floating bits of leaves), but I am not going to retexture the model just because of that, it would be kinda hard also due to them being default assets provied with the ce3 sdk and I think there is no source provided for the tree models anyway, it would make repainting quite uncomfortable.

Arh thats cool, what's with all the blur though? It doesn't look very sharp rendering wise, is that intentional?

I used quite a bit of (at times shallow) Dof, rest of the blurriness would come from the post AA I think. Because I had no intention of blurring the stuff in focus, I'll take a second look at it

Btw, the sharpening filter doesn't seem to do much, at least for the settings I'm running, that is why I didn't bother to touch it in the ToD, I guess that is also related to AA?

Is anybody even remotely interested in mapping for this game? It's been 6 months and still no editor or DLC. The forums at Bethesda don't see a lot of traffic and you can pick this title up for under 20 euro at play.com. I think it's rather safe to say that this has been a flop.

Was really looking forward to this.

We had to make a sickle for our engineering class. I decided to add a bit sci-fy and Tron.

    [Blocked Image: http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x192/AtsEst/sirp_01.jpg]

    Designed in Solidworks.

I hardly have time to make any proper art these days

    *Edit*

The lecturer (he an engineer, teaching us to use Solidworks) was baffeled by the design so i had to write an instruction manula for it, also did this picture to demonstrate the "working" position:

So i took the liberty of doing a small paintover of you last picture. Shifted hues, added colour and mainly gave it a lot of additions to the lighting: bigger more contrasty areas, small highlights near the lights etc.

So, what shall the tutorial be based around? Should we create a new mechanic that no one has used before? Or keep it something that every engine can create? Or... leave it up to the designer to choose which mechanic / ability / whatever they want to teach?

Designer choice sounds best. It would give headroom for all kinds of really wacky ideas

    Looking super awesome!

Minos made a good point about the sea.

I also have found it to be beneficial to tweak a screen in ps and when that is done, it is quite easy to bring those back to Cryengine as well, as you know the exact end result you are looking for.

Well, they are going to announce something with a three in it. But then again it's just probably a part of Valve's epic troll-streak.

Wouldn't mind if it was the first title to accompany the shiny little box.

I think the saturation and hue of the foliage could be turned down a bit and moved towards more pale and blueish hues like in the concept, you could just as well do it in the ToD editor by making green your selective colour and shifting around the appropriate values. Just a thought.

    Nice going thus far
