  • Marketing an indie game is hard! Any advice?

Coming from advertising myself, I'd say finding an artist capable of doing both game art and marketing materials would be good choice for a small indie team.

Oh and fyi, not speaking about zomg I can photoshoot bannerz, but also understanding the basics of "good" marketing helps a lot.

Also what Charlie said of wtm.

So is there really no way for zooming in posted pictures while on mobile? You can't pinch zoom or double click to open in a new window, right?

Such a shame development stopped, is the team thinking of moving onto a new project or has it broken up?

We're still in contact on almost daily basis, at least us few remaining devs. And there is still some progress with the mod but you can't really call one revision per month healthy progress towards release

But yeah, some of us have discussed a possibility of working on something new together but nothing really concrete yet. Time, or the lack of it, is always a problem when it comes to projects like this.

Decided to release one piece of my work to the public few days ago.

Originally designed this (a slow process that took few years ) for the main menu background of Resistance & Liberation (a source mod) after finishing up with the RnL logo and website stuff. Now released this as a desktop backgound / promo art as the mod development has gone more or less in full halt.

Hopefully our team can squeeze one more patch out in the future since there's still some weirdos out there playing the game.

    Here, have a small preview

Imo they sound ok and cheesy in a good-ish way. Now release the fucker.

Nice work you got there - the topmost one is my fav of your submissions. I'd personally just leave the symbol out of it, the typeface itself has modified O as a "core" and it does the trick by wrapping up the idea to the typeface. By adding the symbol it's like tårta på tårta, as the Swedes would put it, imho.

Oh and dunno how tweaked your individual characters are at this point, but few pointers that came to my mind (nitpicking will follow, beware and don't pay attention if you want ):

I'd scale the the O and C a bit to expand them over the x-height - just to make them visually as large as the other letters. The R letter is falling a bit to it's right, guessing the leg being a bit on the light side is to blame there. And E is just slightly too heavy.

Seeing the logo only in small size might cause the issues above too.

But all in all it rocks Good job.

I actually like these. They're vastly different from existing entries and arguably more obscure in meaning, but the meaning is there and I do find them aesthetically pleasing — when I look at them I do think of 3D geometry and stuff. I do however think you've been too subtle with the 'M', and that the line weight on that should be considerably higher so it literally jumps out. At the moment it's quite possible to not even notice there's an 'M' there unless you're seeking it out.

    Added some stroke width:

Basicly, I wouldn't want the M strokes to be too fat, trying to keep the whole thing even somewhat balanced visually. Making the M too fat ruins the aesthetics a bit, imo.

We released the latest patch for RnL today, news post:

More info on our website http://www.resistanceandliberation.com

Few hiccups with the release but hopefully we'll get enough feedback and bug reports to release 1.7 in a bit less time than...one year. So, if you guys are interested in a WW2 source mod, give it a go - might not be everybody's cup 'o tea tho.

Also, I know there's few guys here in mapcore that have worked on RnL in the past, so I'd suggest you to take a look how we've managed to ruin it during these few years

second, while abstractions works for a number of different things, they don't work for logos. a logo is an icon; it is made to instantly give people an impression about a brand/company/etc. abstractions will not do this easy, and will leave people confused instead.

Hmmm, I sorta disagree on that one as logos can also be used to convey feelings or action(?) without resembling any specific form, business or product etc. You could take Nike for example of that. In the end, it's just a swoosh.

Oh and not saying that my logo is up the par with Nike logo fyi , this is coming solely from designers point of view.

And my deviation from the old mapcore logo and feel was intentional, I think you have enough variations on that one already, couldn't do any better

    Uhh hello.

Even though it seems that you guys have already decided on the direction you wanna take, I'll still post mah idea here since it's been troubling my mind for a week or two It's not the most polished logo I've made but I kinda like it.

So, a bit more abstract and simple design, ditching most parts and feel of the old logo - still leaving some influences on gradients and such.

To break it down a bit, it's a darn diamond-ish shape with a M in its core. Tadah!

Also, some hints to 3d stuff in the lines (creating verts 'n such) and the color scheme. Multiple color choices.

Ummm...and a badge too, because every aspiring game designer needs one (to wear while sitting long nights in front of a pc).

hehe Tim, I can always send you RnLs logo in some transparent file format if you like? Just so you wouldn't have to ruin your portfolio with the cropped website headers

Other than that, the portfolio is full of awesome.
